Chapter Five: Edge of the Blade

1075 Words
Rain sliced through the night like a thousand icy knives, pounding Zara’s apartment window until it thrummed with every hit. She sat rigid at her desk, the soft yellow glow of her lamp carving sharp angles across her ghostly pale face. Scattered papers, creased and chaotic, sprawled across the surface, a cold coffee mug abandoned beside them. On her screen, green server logs flickered like a frantic heartbeat. She grit her teeth, fingers blurring over the keyboard, a cold sweat tracing her temple. That email—damn it, it was a noose tightening around her neck, a setup she had to unravel before the sun dared to rise. Thunder cracked outside, the air heavy with the raw, wet scent of rain seeping in. She tugged her sweater close, eyes glinting like steel. A deafening *bang* ruptured the stillness—the apartment door exploded inward, wood chips flying like shrapnel. Zara’s head snapped up. Zack barreled through, his black hoodie dripping, water streaming off him in rivulets. In his fist, a dagger gleamed, cold and cruel, matching the feral red in his eyes. He lunged, voice a guttural growl, “Zara, Apex is dead, and you’re not slipping out of this!” She twisted away, chair crashing to the floor with a shrill yelp. Grabbing the coffee mug, she hurled it—ceramic shattered, slashing a bloody line across his cheek. “You’re unhinged!” Zara panted, backing into the corner, her gaze darting to the fruit knife on the counter. Zack’s grin was a jagged s***h, all teeth and menace, as he closed in, blade cutting the air. “Unhinged? I came back for *you*, and you ran to Hunter Steele! Sign this equity release, or I’ll burn you down!” He yanked a drenched paper from his pocket and slapped it to the floor—ink bled into a smear, but her name blazed through the mess. Zara’s laugh was ice-cold. The second his eyes dipped, she dove for the desk, snatched the knife, and flipped it against his throat in one slick move. “Burn me? You first!” The blade kissed his skin, a bead of blood blooming. Zack froze, breath hitching. “You wouldn’t…” he rasped. Before he could finish, she slammed her heel into his gut. He crashed into the sofa, the dagger skidding free. “Get out!” Zara snarled, her trembling hand steady on the knife. Zack staggered up, throwing her a vicious glare, then stormed out, the door slamming like a thunderclap. Zara Chester dropped the blade, lunging for her laptop. Fingers shaking, she saved the server breach data to a USB. She grabbed her phone, dialing Steele, voice hoarse: “It’s me. Zack just hit my place. I’ve got proof. I’m coming to Apex—now.” --- Fifteen minutes later, Apex Group’s top-floor boardroom thrummed with tension. Rain battered the massive windows, water snaking down in twisted, ghostly trails. The harsh white lights inside burned the eyes. Hunter Steele stood at the head of the long table, jacket slung over his chair, sleeves rolled up to reveal sinewy forearms. He gripped a pen, knuckles white, tapping it like a war beat. Zara burst in, trench coat soaked, water dripping from her hair onto the carpet. She tossed the USB onto the table. “The email’s a fake—Marlene forged it through my account. Zack’s her accomplice.” Hunter plugged the drive in. The screen flared, showing logs and footage: Marlene Chen sneaking into the office at midnight, fingers flying over the keys. His icy stare swung to Marlene, hovering nearby, her makeup streaking with sweat, a folder slipping from her grip to smack the floor. “Hunter, I—I didn’t!” she stammered. “Didn’t?” Hunter shot up, kicking his chair back with a splintering *crack*. He loomed over her, voice a low roar. “Your face is plastered all over that video! You and Zack trying to gut Apex? If your dad hadn’t been my old man’s loyal shadow, you’d be nothing here!” He snatched the coffee mug off the table and smashed it against the wall—shards flew as Marlene screamed, collapsing. Zara cut in, “Zack broke into my place, tried to force me to sign this.” She flung the soggy equity paper down. Hunter’s eyes flicked to it, a killing edge flaring. He smirked, dark and deadly. “Quite the performance.” He turned to Marlene, voice a lethal whisper, “Five minutes. Spill it, or you’re done.” Marlene sobbed, “Zack made me! Said I’d get a cut of the shares!” Hunter waved—security stormed in, dragging her up. As they hauled her out, she twisted toward Zara, voice venomous: “You’re brutal, Zara. This isn’t over.” Lightning split the sky outside, their gazes clashing, sparks igniting in the storm’s howl. Hunter spun to Zara, jaw tight. “You good?” She nodded, brushing wet hair back, pulse still hammering. “Yeah. They’re desperate. What’s our play?” He cracked his knuckles, staring out at the rain-lashed city. “We strike back—hard and fast.” The air between them buzzed, alive with heat and grit, as the night swallowed their next move. The city lights glimmered beyond, a battlefield primed. Zara sank into a chair, peeling off her drenched coat, catching her breath. Hunter paced, restless energy radiating. “Marlene’s dad was family to Apex, but she’s a snake,” he muttered. “And Zack? A rabid stray—I should’ve dealt with him years ago.” Zara’s lips twitched upward. “Still can. We’ve got the ammo.” She tapped the USB beside the crumpled paper. “This buries them.” Hunter paused, locking eyes with her. For a fleeting moment, the storm in his gaze softened—something raw flickered there, tugging at her. “You’re tougher than I figured, Chester,” he said, voice low, rough, sending a spark down her spine. She shrugged, hiding the flush creeping up her neck. “Had to be. You don’t win this game going soft.” Thunder growled, punctuating her words, the room shrinking around them. He stepped closer, a smirk teasing his mouth. “Good. ‘Cause we’re just warming up.” The promise crackled between them—war, heat, and something unspoken twisting tight. Outside, the storm raged, but here, the real fire was igniting.
