A lot of my friends knew that my parents had high expectations for me, but not many knew what the consequences for not living up to those expectations were. My mom preferred to pretend I didn’t exist and lock me in my room with only frozen dinners to accompany me. That wasn’t so bad.
But my dad was another story. He was controlling and scary. If I ever tried to express my opinion, my phone was taken for a week. He would call it back-talking and said that if I couldn’t learn how to talk to those in authority, I shouldn’t be able to talk to my friends either. This, too, wasn’t so bad. Except that he rarely stopped with just this.
