2: My pleasure

Julian hurried to the lavatories and after ensuring no one else was in the stalls, he fetched his phone and dialed the first person who came to his mind. “What's up?” Tommy rasped from the other side of the line, sounding more chatty than Julian wanted him to. “I have found my mate,” Julian muttered leery, scratching his head. There was a palpable brief silence before Tommy screamed excitedly, “really? Wow! I am so f*cking happy for you.” The Beta was completely unaware of his friend's distress. He went on ranting about how he knew the day would come, and if anyone deserved to be happy it was Julian, and how sure he was that the long-awaited mate was beautiful. “She will make you so happy that the wait will be worth it.” He confidently uttered, making Julian flinch. “It's a he, dumbass.” Julian retorted with a sigh, rendering Tommy speechless for a second. “What do you mean?” The beta asked cautiously, wondering if he had just heard wrongly or if perhaps his friend was on a different topic. He needed a clarification, which Julian offered heatedly. “My mate is a f*cking man! And not even a single one, he is married with a son and Luna knows how many more offsprings he has. Does that sound like a worth the wait scenario to you?” He was now screaming in his friend's ear. There was a brief silence, then followed by a burst of annoying laughter Julian could have killed. “Luna really did a number on you,” Tommy wheezed, wishing he could see Julian's face at the instant. Knowing the nerd, he was probably pinching his nose or pacing in frustration. “Tell me, he at least looks good,” Tommy insisted knowingly. Julian exhaled, letting his mind drift back to the sophisticated Anthony McCain for a minute. “He is not bad,” he mumbled slowly before he realized what his friend was doing. Tommy was goading Julian to lighten the issue, so he doesn't do anything compulsive. “Do you want to ditch?” Tommy asked getting on his feet ready to drive to Red Lions junior if Julian says yes. “Tempting,” Julian breathed. “But I need to find more about him, and this might be my only opportunity.” He added seriously. “I understand, but if you feel…” “I will call you,” Julian interrupted with a sigh. He already knew what Tommy wanted to say. That he will be there waiting to bail him out in case of anything. Before he hung up, Julian threatened the Beta, “No one else should know about this.” “Okay,” “I am serious.” Julian urged. “I have to figure out some things first.” He knew his loud-mouthed friend wouldn't be able to resist, but still… “Like what?” Tommy asked curiously, hoping his friend wasn't considering rejecting his mate. “Don't worry about it,” “Julian!” Tommy bellowed anxiously. “Don't do anything stupid.” “He is married,” Julian snapped. “You don't know that! He might be a single father for all we know.” Tommy exclaimed, making Julian go silent for a minute before he conceded. “Nothing stupid.” “Good,” Tommy praised. “Now go back in there and make the man squirm.” After hanging up, Julian checked his reflection in the mirror, cursing why he had thought wearing a cardigan was a good idea. 'You look good,' his wolf spoke softly. He knew his human was overwhelmed, and he didn't want to rush, pushing him. It was already worse, their mate was probably a married man, but he didn't want his human to go rejecting him. 'I know what you are doing,' Julian accused with a sigh. “If he turns out to be married, I can't promise I won't reject him.” His wolf didn't offer a response, even as Julian sauntered back to his office. He lingered by the door for a minute or two, trying to calm his erratic heart. After a deep exhale, he opened the door and walked in. His mate's eyes instantly found his. Julian could have sworn the man had been anticipating his return in the way his eyes brightened up. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” He apologized, taking a seat, and Anthony was quick to reassure him they didn't mind. The billionaire couldn't stop staring, even if he tried. Something about his son's teacher called to him. Julian cleared his throat and began the meeting by referring to Ethan's excellent grades. The oblivious boy basked in the praise, missing the palpable tension between the adults. “He has a remarkable teacher,” Anthony pointed out, the reason behind Ethan's good grades. Julian didn't miss the double meaning behind the man's words. “You and your wife are the remarkable ones for raising such a great champ.” Julian held his breath, waiting for the man to confirm or refute the wife. Ethan's face fell, while Anthony just shifted awkwardly. It was telling, there was a story there. He almost regretted his prying, but Anthony croaked. “Ethan's mother is dead.” “I am sorry,” Julian rasped, feeling like an ass but relieved at the same time. “It was a long time ago,” Anthony shrugged, but Julian could see the man was not as confident as he had been before he mentioned the wife. He quickly changed the topic, informing Anthony of the upcoming mathematics symposium and that Ethan was his class' representative. Anthony glanced at his son with a proud smile. No wonder he was insisting on timings. Anthony thought. He clearly wanted his favorite teacher to deliver the news. After Julian was done, Anthony requested Ethan to step aside for a minute because he needed to have a private moment with his teacher. Julian swallowed nervously. He didn't know how to behave now that Ethan was no longer there to dissipate the tension. He shifted, straightening his back. “I missed you at the last parent-teacher conference, and he was pissed.” Anthony offered in ruse, making Julian smile. “I had an emergency, sorry about that.” Julian cursed internally, realizing he could have met his mate months ago. He schooled his features though and engaged Anthony in a meaningful conversation, mostly about Ethan. Both men knew something was happening between them. And the drastic shift from Mr. McCain and Mr. Walker to Anthony and Julian was a clear indication! “Would you like to exchange contacts, perhaps?” Anthony asked, shocking Julian pleasantly. He didn't think the human had it in him, but clearly he was wrong. Julian nodded, trying to contain his glee. “I would love to.” None of the men put a word to what was transpiring between them. It was like an unspoken mutual understanding. “It was a pleasure meeting you," Anthony smiled, stretching his hand for a shake. Julian took it eagerly, holding his mate's smoldering gaze. They lingered enjoying the feel of each other's skin and then Anthony did the incredible. He winked. And Julian blushed to his toes. Anthony leaned in and whispered hoarsely. “You are so adorable.” An audible gasp escaped Julian's lips, making Anthony laugh heartily, before he turned and left. Julian didn't move for a while. He had been called many endearing terms, but adorable wasn't one of them. Not that he was complaining. If he was being completely honest, he kinda liked it. He smiled and then frowned. There was no questioning it, his mate was a dominant. 'I am so going to enjoy this,' his wolf chuckled.
