CHAPTER 41 “The maddest thing ever.” Bowie’s thoughts drifted. He had rarely felt so content. But on the far edge of awareness, he heard what sounded like someone sawing wood. He must be dreaming, perhaps of the time he and his brothers owned a sawmill. But as the sound grew in volume, he knew it was not a dream at all. His eyes snapped open and he peered into the darkening sky. The settlers had not given them a saw, and he could not imagine the Kronks using such a tool. The only other explanation brought him to his feet, spilling Mariette yelping onto the grass. He quickly fastened his trousers and jammed feet into boots.
