Chapter Twenty: The Two Thrones

1067 Words
The chamber erupted with light. Silver flames burst upward from the white throne while black fire consumed the dark one, twisting through the crystal hall like living shadows. Ancient symbols spun violently around the ceiling now, illuminating forgotten words across the walls. Selene could not breathe. The two thrones pulsed like beating hearts. Calling her. The First Queen stood between them calmly, silver hair drifting through the storm of magic surrounding the chamber. “One throne preserves fate,” she said softly. Her hand lifted toward the silver throne. Moonlight exploded brighter instantly. “The cycle continues. The kingdoms survive. The prison remains sealed.” Then slowly— She turned toward the black throne. Dark fire curled around her fingers. “This throne breaks the cycle forever.” The chamber temperature dropped sharply. “The prison dies. The bloodlines end. And every ancient force buried beneath this world awakens.” Kael swore under his breath. Lucien’s expression hardened. “You’re asking her to choose between extinction and slavery.” The First Queen smiled faintly. “Yes.” Selene stared at the thrones silently. Because somehow— Both choices terrified her equally. The silver throne pulsed gently. Warm. Familiar. And suddenly memories flooded her mind. A peaceful kingdom untouched by corruption. Lucien alive. Their people surviving. Children laughing beneath moonlit festivals. Hope. But beneath it all— Chains. Invisible but unbreakable. The same cycle repeating endlessly. Love. Betrayal. Death. Again and again. Selene gasped softly as the vision vanished. The black throne pulsed next. Violently. Darkness exploded through her thoughts. Kingdoms burning. Ancient monsters rising from beneath shattered prisons. Blood moons swallowing the sky. Lucien dying beside her while Kael stood among endless snow and fire. And herself— Alone on a throne made from ruin. The vision disappeared abruptly. Selene staggered backward. Lucien caught her instantly. “Selene.” His voice sounded rough with concern. She pulled away shakily. “I saw…” The First Queen nodded knowingly. “The future bends around both choices.” Kael crossed his arms slowly. “So either she sacrifices herself to preserve fate…” His silver eyes darkened toward the black throne. “Or destroys the world trying to escape it.” “Essentially.” Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Selene laughed once. The sound came out hollow. “Why does every solution involve ruining my life?” The First Queen’s expression softened unexpectedly. “Because power always demands something precious.” Lucien looked toward the silver throne sharply. “What exactly happens if she chooses preservation?” Silence. Then quietly— “She becomes the seal.” Selene froze. Kael’s expression turned murderous instantly. “No.” The First Queen continued anyway. “The prison merges permanently with her soul. She lives… but no longer freely.” Lucien stepped protectively toward Selene immediately. “She’s not doing that.” The woman looked at him sadly. “You already asked her to once before.” The chamber fell silent. Lucien physically flinched. Another memory surfaced violently. A moonlit chamber. Selene crying while he held her face gently. Him whispering: Just one sacrifice more. Gods. Lucien staggered slightly. Selene looked away instantly. Because she remembered too. The promises. The lies. The endless sacrifices he asked from her while believing it was for the kingdom. The First Queen turned toward the black throne now. “And destruction?” Kael asked coldly. The woman’s silver eyes darkened. “The bloodlines break permanently.” Lucien frowned sharply. “What does that mean?” The answer came softly. “No more reincarnation.” Silence. The words echoed deeper than expected. Selene’s chest tightened painfully. No more returning. No more repeating the same tragic story across lifetimes. No more finding Lucien again only to lose him. No more becoming monsters trying to save each other. Freedom. The thought felt dangerously tempting. Kael noticed her expression immediately. “Don’t.” Selene looked toward him. The northern king stepped closer slowly. His silver eyes remained fixed only on her. “You’re thinking about choosing destruction.” She didn’t answer. That was answer enough. Lucien’s wolf surged instantly. “No.” Selene turned sharply toward him. “You don’t get to decide.” Lucien moved closer anyway. “If destroying the cycle destroys you too—” “It’s my choice.” The force in her voice cracked the crystal floor beneath her feet. Moonfire flickered violently across her skin. The chamber responded instantly. Both thrones glowed brighter. The First Queen watched with quiet fascination. “There she is.” Kael looked between the thrones carefully. “What happens to the kings if the cycle breaks?” The woman smiled faintly. “You finally stop belonging to her.” The sentence struck harder than expected. Lucien’s expression darkened instantly. Kael went very still. Interesting. Very interesting. Selene frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” The First Queen approached slowly until she stood directly before Selene. “Every lifetime, the moon pulls your souls together again.” Her silver eyes softened. “Love. War. Betrayal. Death. The details change, but the ending remains.” Lucien stared at Selene silently. Because deep inside— He already knew it was true. That strange pull toward her. The instinctive need to protect her even before understanding why. The unbearable grief surfacing through memories that weren’t fully his yet. Fate. Kael exhaled slowly beside them. “And if she breaks the cycle?” The First Queen’s smile faded completely. “Then when this life ends…” Her gaze shifted between both kings. “You never find her again.” Silence crushed the chamber. Selene felt her heart stop briefly. Because suddenly— The black throne no longer looked like freedom. It looked lonely. Orion’s glowing form flickered weaker near the cradle. “Hurry,” he whispered softly. The chamber began trembling violently. The corruption spreading above had reached deeper into the prison now. Black cracks spread across the crystal walls while distant screams echoed through the tunnels. Time was ending. The First Queen stepped backward between the thrones. “Choose, little echo.” The silver throne glowed brighter. The black throne roared with shadow. Lucien looked at Selene like his entire soul depended on her answer. Kael looked at her like he would burn kingdoms before letting fate destroy her again. And Selene— Selene realized she no longer knew which choice terrified her more.
