Everything happened so fast that I couldn’t even react in time.
I was watching Selene, seeing how she stood her ground, fighting the Alpha, fighting her own demons, when suddenly, in the blink of an eye, she… disappeared. Not literally—she didn’t vanish before our eyes—but she was gone from us. From her soul, from her will. From herself.
I guessed Skadi had pushed her too far. The battle between the wolf and the woman had dragged on longer than any of us anticipated, and the price Selene was paying was far greater than we’d thought.
The Alpha, standing in the middle of the battlefield, seemed as disoriented as I was. Clearly, he hadn’t expected this. He wanted a brutal fight, perhaps the defeat of one of us. But what he didn’t expect was Selene’s retreat.
