Chapter Two: The Sanctuary "Online, nobody knows you're a human in a den of wolves. Or that you just almost fell apart on your first day." Willow POV My hands were still trembling as I slammed the heavy wooden door of my single dorm room shut. I dropped my leather backpack onto the linoleum floor, leaning back against the wood until my breathing slowed down. "Breathe, Willow. Just breathe," I whispered to the empty room. I walked over to the small vanity mirror hanging above the sink, turning on the cold water and splashing it over my face. I gripped the porcelain edges of the basin, staring at my reflection. My hazel eyes looked wide and skittish, a faint flush still lingering on my cheeks. Transferring to Moonlight Academy on a full scholarship was supposed to be my dream. Ever since the Alpha King had mated a human and opened up the integration trial, I had poured every late-night study session and ounce of my soul into passing that brutal entrance exam. I wanted to prove that a human could thrive among wolves—that we weren't just fragile creatures meant to be protected or looked down upon. Instead, my very first day on campus had felt like walking through a minefield lined with predators. The towering stone architecture was intimidating enough, but the students? They carried an effortless, terrifying power that vibrated through the air. Every hallway was a test of nerve. Every passing glance felt like a warning. And then there was him—that Beta in the courtyard. The one with the severe undercut, broad shoulders, and dark eyes that felt like they could see straight through my skull. He had loomed over me, unleashing an overwhelming aura that had made my heart slam against my ribs like a trapped bird. I stood my ground, but standing up to him had drained every ounce of my courage. I wiped my face with a hand towel, pulled off my shoes, and collapsed onto my unmade bed. I propped my laptop up on my knees, desperately needing an anchor to pull me out of my spiraling thoughts. I logged into Runeclash. The dark blue guild interface loaded, soft ambient music washing through my headphones as digital stardust floated across the screen. Instantly, the knot in my chest loosened. This server was my safe haven. For over two years, this game had been the one place where I didn't have to put up walls or pretend to be fearless. A notification chimed in the bottom corner of my screen. DaddyVibes was already waiting in our private lobby. A genuine smile finally broke through my exhaustion. Vibes was my favorite person in the world. We’d met on a public server when his paladin had accidentally agroed an entire dungeon boss, and we had played together every single night at 11:30 PM ever since. We’d built an unspoken bond—no real names, no face reveals, just pure trust and late-night comfort. DaddyVibes (Me): You're here early. How was your day, Sunshine? DemonBitch: You call me Sunshine one more time and I will track you down IRL and show you my dark side. DaddyVibes: Ooh, terrifying. You love my high-level heals too much to ever hurt me. How are you holding up? How was your first day at your dream school? I took a deep breath, resting my chin in my hand as I typed back, letting down my guard in a way I couldn't with anyone else. DemonBitch: Honestly, Vibes? It was overwhelming. I was so nervous my stomach felt like it was doing gymnastics all morning. The campus is huge, and the people here... they're so intimidating. One guy got right in my face in the quad, throwing his authority around just because he could. I paused, carefully omitting the fact that the "authority" was a werewolf Beta aura, or how close I’d come to bursting into tears from the sheer pressure of it all. DemonBitch: I stood my ground, but God, I felt so small. I'm starting to wonder if I actually belong here. I stared at the screen, my chest tight as I waited for his reply. The three little typing dots appeared next to his username. DaddyVibes: Hey. Listen to me, Demon. You belong there more than anyone. DaddyVibes: I don't know who that jerk in the quad was, but he probably deserved to be humiliated for trying to make you feel small. Whoever he is, he's an i***t. You are brilliant, hilarious, and fiercely smart. You are perfect, Sunshine. Wherever you go, you're going to dominate. Don't let some arrogant asshole make you doubt your dream. A warm, fluttery sensation erupted in my chest, a blush creeping up my neck that had nothing to do with fear. My heart beat a little faster against my ribs as I re-read his words. He always knew exactly what to say to make me feel invincible. DemonBitch: ...Thanks, Vibes. You really know how to make a girl smile. DaddyVibes: I try my best. 😉 Now, where is Underdog? He was supposed to lead our raid party tonight. My sweet mood shifted into immediate concern. Underdog wasn't just a gaming buddy; he was our closest friend. The three of us were a tight-knit trio. He was the goofy, big-hearted paladin who always kept our group laughing when dungeons got tough. He was like a brother to both of us. DemonBitch: I don't know. He hasn't responded to my Discord messages all day. It's really not like him. He never misses a Tuesday raid. DaddyVibes: Yeah, it's weird. He was talking about some local pack—I mean, local community project he was working on yesterday, but he promised he'd be online by 11:00. DemonBitch: Vibes... did you see the regional news forums tonight? Two other players from our server sector vanished from their apartments yesterday. What if something happened to him? I'm actually worried. There was a long silence on the other end. The weight of our missing friend hung heavy in the digital chatroom. DaddyVibes: Underdog is smart. He can take care of himself. But if he doesn't log on by tomorrow, I'll track down his local contact info. I won't let anything happen to him, I promise. I smiled softly, propping my head up on my hand. He was always so protective. It made me feel safe, even miles away through a laptop screen. My cell phone buzzed on the nightstand. I picked it up, seeing a text from home. Mark: Hey Wil! Hope your first day at the new school went okay. Call me when you get a chance? I found that vintage camera lens you were looking for! Miss you! I smiled softly, a tiny prick of guilt touching my conscience. Mark was my boyfriend back home. We’d been dating for six months before I got the scholarship. He was a soft-spoken, six-foot-four computer science nerd who wore oversized glasses, knitted his own scarves, and spent his weekends organizing retro video game tournaments. He was gentle, safe, and the exact opposite of the chaotic, aggressive energy at Moonlight Academy. I set the phone back down, refocusing on my laptop screen. DemonBitch: You're a good friend, Vibes. DaddyVibes: I'm trying to be more than a friend, Sunshine. Honestly... I really like talking to you. Every single night, you're the best part of my day. My heart skipped a physical beat. My breath hitched in my throat as I stared at the bold white text on my monitor. He had flirted before, but this was different—it was sincere, vulnerable, and charged with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine. I knew wolves and humans had fated mates out there somewhere, but right now, the spark I felt reading Vibes' text was undeniable. DaddyVibes: I know we made a rule about keeping things online, but... do you think you'd ever want to hang out in real life? Maybe get a drink or coffee? My fingers hovered over the keyboard, my heart hammering against my chest. Yes, I wanted to type. A thousand times yes. Before my fingers could hit the keys, a sharp, piercing emergency siren began to wail across the Moonlight Academy campus grounds outside my window. At the exact same instant, a red flashing banner overtook my laptop screen, cutting right through the Runeclash chat room, accompanied by a high-pitched alert from my cell phone. CAMPUS & REGIONAL EMERGENCY ALERT: OFFICIAL MISSING PERSONS REPORT ISSUED. Student Robert Vance (User Tag: 'Underdog') confirmed missing from North Perimeter. Magical signature and pack interference detected. Evidence indicates a targeted hunter is operating on campus, hunting both wolves and humans. ALL STUDENTS RETURN TO QUARTERS IMMEDIATELY. I stared at the screen, the breath completely knocked out of my lungs. "Robert..." I whispered, terror gripping my throat. Underdog's real name was Robert. A final, hurried message flashed from Vibes in the glitching chatbox before the server began to shut down. DaddyVibes: I have to go right now. Robert is pack—he's one of ours. Someone is hunting on campus. Stay in your room, lock the door, and DO NOT open it for anyone. I will find you tomorrow. DaddyVibes has logged off. I sat alone in the dim light of my dorm room, the campus sirens wailing outside, holding my breath as the realization hit me: our best friend was gone, a serial killer was on the prowl, and the safe world I thought I knew was crashing down around us.
