“Welcome to Andrews Industries, how may I be of service to you?” The receptionist behind the desk greeted with a forced, customer-friendly smile.
“Uh, I have an interview with Mr. Andrew at 2:30 PM.”
The receptionist’s warmth vanished at Sasha's words. She grimaced, looking Sasha up and down. Surely she must have lost it. Why would her boss ever approve of such an underfed-looking lady to work with him?
I mean, look around, the place was filled with classy, polished professionals.
The receptionist didn’t bother checking the register. “It’s 2:32, and I’m sorry, but I’m very sure Mr. Andrew has no interviews today.”
“He—”
“Oh, welcome Mrs. Dennis.” The receptionist immediately tossed their conversation aside as Martha Dennis, CEO of a famous nail tech company, headed toward her with a child in her arms.
The woman walked right past Sasha and began conversing with the receptionist as if Sasha wasn’t standing there.
Sasha could taste the bitter sting of embarrassment on her tongue. “Excuse me, ma’am, I have an—”
“Can’t you see we are talking?” Martha shot her a dangerous glare. Her disgusted eyes raked over Sasha’s classless sundress and sandals. Hadn’t she looked in the mirror before leaving home?
Sasha’s mouth instantly opened to retort, but she quickly closed it and looked away. This wasn’t the place to speak out. She wasn’t ready to get into a fight with anyone. The job mattered more.
Turning her gaze around, she stared at the massive, plush interiors as people walked about on all the floors. She felt completely out of place. Even the buyers were dressed impeccably.
Their footsteps were calculated, precise. The workers looked almost robotic. She didn’t like the atmosphere, but working in a place like this would be a dream come true. Life would be so much better.
She made a silent prayer. Dear Lord, if I get this job, I promise never to take alcohol again. I really need a miracle.
And just then, the tiny ding of an elevator opening rang in her ears. Her gaze snapped to the elevator in the right corner, where a man in a sharp black suit stepped inside. Something whispered to her that he was her ticket to Andrew.
She didn’t have time to doubt. She lunged for the elevator.
“Hey, what the hell are you doing!” the receptionist barked.
But Sasha didn’t stop. If she needed to seduce Mr. Andrew, she would. Getting this far had to be a sign.
Andrew, who had just stepped into the elevator, raised a brow at the lady racing toward him, chased by three guards and his receptionist. The elevator doors were closing. He didn’t know whether to feel attacked or… what?
She might be tall, but she was no match for him. He hit the gym four times a week and had gone to karate school as a kid.
Andrew took a step back as the lady barely made it into the elevator before the doors slid shut.
Sasha clutched her chest, panting. Oddly, that had been fun.
She glanced at Andrew, chuckling nervously. She must look like an asthma patient right now. “Nothing to see here.” She patted her chest. “Oh my God.”
Andrew’s eyes nearly went wide. That same voice. She was the lady who had run into him earlier. Damn, wasn’t she gorgeous?
His heart raced a mile. Where the hell did that thought come from? He quickly looked away and pressed the button for the thirteenth floor.
Sasha’s heart leapt to her throat. “No, not the thirteenth floor. Oh my God, I’m finally going to die.”
She must really enjoy talking to strangers, Andrew thought, feeling uncomfortable.
Sasha gripped the wall, trying to calm her racing heart. She didn’t fear heights, but she had triskaidekaphobia. She’d fainted during a middle school trip to a museum after climbing to the thirteenth floor.
Andrew tried to pretend he was alone in the elevator, but the sound of her unsteady breathing made it impossible.
He didn’t know what to say. He’d never been in such an awkward situation before. So he walked toward her, and by the time he reached to touch her shoulder, she jerked around, eyes overly wide.
He nearly flinched.
“What were you just trying to do?”
Andrew frowned. That had been a mistake on his part. She must be some crazy woman trying to get him into trouble again. Probably sent to set him up and create drama with his fiancée.
“It’s not gentlemanly for you to go around touching ladies.” Sasha ran a hand through her hair, staring anywhere but at him.
“Where’s the camera?” Andrew asked flatly, his gaze firmly fixed on her.
Sasha finally met his eyes—and Christ, was he hot. For a heartbeat, she thought it really was Mr. Andrew. He resembled one of the many polished images of him she’d seen in magazines and news articles.
But this man was fine. How could someone have so many perfect features syncing together in such harmony?
“Are you deaf?”
Sasha snapped out of her daze quickly. “Wait, what did you just say?”
Andrew didn’t have time for this. His gaze flicked to the phone in her hand. “Give that to me. Now.”
“Wait, what? Is this some kind of daylight robbery?” She shoved her phone quickly into her pocket.
“I hardly get aggressive, but don’t push me.”
Sasha folded her arms across her chest. “And who are you to demand my phone? You know there are tons of security here. If I scream, they’ll come and beat the hell out of you.”
Andrew scoffed. Clearly, she had no idea who he was. His assumption had been wrong. He looked away, ignoring her, and faced the elevator doors.
Why was the elevator so damn slow this time?
“Thought you’d put up a fuss.” Sasha rolled her eyes and walked to stand next to him. “What floor is Mr. Andrew’s office on?”
Andrew raised a brow. Why did she need to be at his office? He remembered her mentioning an interview. But he hadn’t scheduled any today.
He ignored her.
Sasha released a tired breath and muttered, Oh please, Lord, let me get this job. I’m already so late.
When the elevator doors opened, Sasha bolted out before Andrew could. He watched her walk down the hallway in confusion. He trailed behind, mentally debating whether to call her back and tell her she had already passed his door.
Before he could stop himself, he was stretching out a hand to call her, but froze when she stopped someone else.
“Uh, please, do you know where Mr. Andrew’s office is?”
The man pointed at the door to her right. She smiled gratefully and ran toward it, only to find it locked.
It was as if life seeped out of her body. Had he already left because she was late? No. No, no, no. This couldn’t be happening.
Andrew walked up behind her, his presence drawing her attention. As she turned, he leaned in and swiped his card at the door.
Sasha’s gaze shifted from disappointment to shock as the door beeped open and Alexa’s voice said: Welcome back, Mr. Andrew.
Andrew’s eyes locked on her brown, chocolate ones. Admittedly, the surprised look on her face did wonders for his ego.
“You asked who I was.” His gaze flickered to the strand of hair caught on her eyelash. He was tempted to brush it away. “Well, I’m Andrew Carter, and I’m guessing we have an interview together.”
