The next morning, Sartin broke his fast with Maru and his family. Maru sat at his right side and ensured his food was prepared correctly.
“Do you need anything from us to make your stay more comfortable?” the chief asked during the meal.
“I need a pool of seawater to sleep in and rest in during the day.”
“We shall work on that—”
“Sir, we have news of the Kalama preparing for war again.” Kekoa spoke directly to the chief but watched Sartin and Maru from the corner of his eye.
“Why say you this?”
“Remnants of the War Ceremony left in their camp.” Akoni presented the chief with a burnt idol.
“We will keep this between us. Today, we need to dig a pool for Kamohoali’i in his hut.”
“But—”
“I will protect the tribe while my accommodations are built. Don’t worry.”
