I was standing in a completely dark space. No sound. No movement. Total emptiness.
As eerie as it seemed, I felt peaceful and tranquil.
A bright light suddenly appeared, stunning me. “My dear child.” A man stood.
“Grandfather!” I dashed forward to embrace him. He was exactly how I remembered- wrinkled, gray beards with a smile full of wisdom.
“Why did this have to happen?” I choked, my heart clenching in pain.
“The prophecy was inevitable.” He reached out to wipe my tears.
I felt his warm touch, but I couldn’t touch him. “But the Moon Goddess is willing to give you a fighting chance.”
“What prophecy?” I asked, totally confused.
He nodded. “On the day you were born, there was a secret prophecy that you will become the Ultimate Alpha. Only you can save Australia from impending calamities.”
“Your father was the mysterious Alpha Skai. His and your mother’s royal bloodline formed a rare Alpha wolf breed that wields insurmountable power. You must awaken the dormant powers within you and use them to save your family, your pack and every wolf in Australia!”
I was stunned frozen.
“But this path will be filled with trials and trepidations. You may endanger your fated mate, and you may lose your life!”
“The Moon Goddess is giving you choices. Do you wish to go on?” My grandfather asked, sympathy in his eyes. “Or step back and restart your life somewhere faraway and peaceful?”
“This-” I faltered.
I’d always craved a peaceful and tranquil life. But the moment my mother was unjustly murdered, everything changed.
I clenched my fists, painful memories flashing back. “My mother was falsely accused and sentenced to death, I was chased and hunted down like an animal by people not even worthy of being my slaves! Today, I’m taking an oath that only I, no one else, will succeed as the next Alpha of the Blood-Thorn pack!” My eyes blazed with anger and determination.
“Remember, the road will be filled with thorns. But with courage and determination, you will emerge victorious.” He nodded with a smile.
With that, my grandfather handed me an ancient dagger. “Keep this with you. Always.”
_
I stirred, waking up to the feel of warm sunlight. I was lying on a soft bedding… in a cave?
My grandfather’s dagger clutched tight in my left hand. I suddenly sat up, images of the dream returning vividly.
The prophecy came as a shock. The fact that Alpha Skai was my father was more shocking!
The unsurmountable Rogue King dressed in a black cloak. A name that wreaked havoc, bloodshed and destruction everywhere he went, so much that my grandfather was wary of offending him.
He disappeared suddenly, allegedly banished by the Moon Goddess.
My mind flashed to the cloaked figure that rescued me back in the forest. Could he be-
“Mate!” Shayla yelled abruptly.
“Can you stop that?” I snapped irritably.
“He’s our mate, duh!”
“Yeah. Whatever.” I was grateful to that person for saving my life.
If he was my father. Good. If not, I only need to return the favor. The last thing I needed was someone losing their lives because of me.
“Thank Goddess.” I stood up to stretch, pleasantly surprised to see no traces of injuries on my body.
I spent the next few hours searching through the cave to reveal several artifacts, ancient scrolls and a long sword.
In the scrolls were detailed instructions on how to find the Academy. I had to pass through 3 gates of tribulations, before the Initiation trial. Fighting monsters. Surviving landslides, thunderstorms and extreme weather conditions. The tasks were unimaginable.
By dusk, I stepped outside to take a deep breath. I was still j the Forbidden forests, now surrounded by beautiful trees, grasses and a river sparkling under the moonlight.
“Finally!” My throat had been so parched. I scooped some water to drink then undressed and got into the river.
“Feels so good.” Shayla muttered, my sore muscles relaxing in the warm water.
Closing my eyes, I submerged myself completely in, letting myself go. I needed to relax and replenish my energy for what lay ahead.
My eyes snapped open at the sound of a splash.
I had unknowingly drifted towards the deeper parts of the water. And now, a crazily sexy man was getting undressed near the lake.
His golden mask glinted in the moonlight, face revealing sharp, distinct features.
“Mate!”
I quickly clasped my hands around my mouth to prevent Shayla putting us in trouble.
“He saved us from your stepbrothers back there.” She jumped in excitement. “Come on, Lyra. Let’s go talk to our mate.”
“We’re doing no such thing!” I shut her down immediately, my heart racing.
I had no idea who he was. What if he wanted my life in exchange for saving me?
“You can’t possibly-” Shayla’s eyes popped the moment he took off his undergarment.
Well-built abs, muscular arms, bronzed thighs, and a face sculpted after one of the Greek gods.
I swallowed hard. The way the water glistened on his skin as he went in and came back up for air.
“Imagine the beautiful pups we’ll make?” Shayla purred.
I dragged in a sharp breath, heat rushing to my core. I tried to imagine him pressing those thin lips against mine..
“Shayla!” I whisper-yelled in an attempt to distract myself from ogling after a stranger.
She didn’t let it go. “Don’t tell me you’re not captivated by those gray eyes-”
“Stop.” My cheeks turned red, trying to imagine the feel of our bodies pressed together.
Still caught in my reverie, I didn't realize when my wolf suddenly went mute.
Those grey eyes had turned bloodshot staring into the depths of my soul. “Who are you? Show yourself!”
The baritone of his voice elicited tingles down my spine and some other emotion that got me hot and breathless.
Heart racing, I slowly revealed my face, moving to a more illuminated part of the river.
“I..I was just having a bath.” I stuttered in a small voice.
His eyes flickered between bloodshot, black, then gray, his gaze burning into mine. A mysteriously chilling aura surrounded us, overwhelming me for a moment.
“Shayla!” I screamed inwardly. “I don’t intend to accept him as my mate.” But she didn't listen. She kept signalling his wolf awake.
A sweet smell of peaches infiltrated my nostrils, pulling me towards him.
“Mate!” An ear-splitting growl escaped his lips.
He closed the gap between us instantly, our bodies pressing in a heated, wild frenzy.
I sucked in his scent. Hot and intoxicating.
“Who are you?” He breathed hotly against my ear, sending pools of heat to my core.
“Say something!” Shayla yelled in my head.
“I-” His fingers trailed my lips, cutting off whatever I wanted to say.
Up closer, he was breathtakingly handsome, exuding a suppressive aura of arrogance that got my throat clamped.
A low moan escaped my lips as his fingers brushed against my hardened n****e.
“Mate!” He growled again, leaning to plant his lips on mine.
Electricity sparked through my skin, lighting up my veins and sending fire down to my core.
“I shouldn’t be doing this.” I trembled, muttering to Shayla.
“He’s our mate, duh!”
“That’s more reason why I shouldn’t!” I suddenly pushed the man away, putting a large gap between us.
“Who the hell are you?” I hissed, trying to show disgust in my voice. “How dare you try to take advantage of me?”
He stared at me, gaze fierce and overbearing.
“I do not need a mate.” I muttered, swimming back to shore. Ignoring my aching core and his burning gaze against my skin, I quickly got dressed.
I closed my eyes.
“Don’t!” He thundered. “Don’t you dare try to reject-”
“I, Lyra Clifford, of the Blood-Thorn pack reject you, whoever you are as my mate. By bond we’re bound, and by word we’re separated!”
