Episode 13: Jealous Hearts

899 Words
The next day, Heaven walked into school feeling different. Not because of the magic. Because everyone seemed to know something. Whispers followed her through the hallway. She heard her name. Then Conrad’s. Then laughter. Maya ran toward her. “You won’t believe what happened.” “What?” “People are saying you and Conrad are officially together.” Heaven groaned. “We’re not.” “I know.” “Who started it?” Maya smiled. “Dylan.” Heaven’s eyes widened. “Dylan?” “He told someone that Conrad was ‘basically taken.’” Heaven covered her face. “This school is exhausting.” Maya laughed. Then she looked behind Heaven. “Oh.” Heaven turned. Conrad was standing there. He smiled. “Morning.” “Did you tell people we’re together?” “No.” “Dylan did.” Conrad laughed. “I’ll deal with him.” Maya grinned. “No, don’t. This is entertaining.” Heaven glared at her. “You’re supposed to be my friend.” “I am.” She smiled. “That’s why I’m enjoying this.” Conrad leaned closer. “Would it really be that bad?” “What?” “If people thought we were together.” Heaven’s heart skipped. “You’re doing it again.” “Doing what?” “Making everything sound…” She stopped. “Sound what?” “Never mind.” He smiled. “You’re blushing.” “I am not.” “You are.” Maya laughed. Then the bell rang. They went to class. At lunch, Heaven was sitting with Maya when Sierra arrived. She looked irritated. “What?” Sierra looked at Heaven. “Can we talk?” Heaven nodded. They stepped aside. Sierra crossed her arms. “You need to be careful.” Heaven sighed. “You always say that.” “Because you aren’t listening.” “I am listening.” “Then stop getting closer to him.” Heaven stared at her. “You can’t tell me who I can like.” Sierra looked hurt. “I know.” “Then why do you keep trying?” “Because I know what happens when someone gets too close to Conrad.” Heaven frowned. “What?” Sierra looked away. “I was with him before.” “I know.” “I thought I could protect him.” Heaven waited. “I couldn’t.” Sierra’s voice cracked slightly. “I lost someone because of that magic.” Heaven’s expression softened. “Your sister.” Sierra nodded. “She was everything to me.” Heaven didn’t know what to say. Sierra looked at her. “So when I see you getting closer to him…” She stopped. “I get scared.” Heaven understood then. Sierra wasn’t simply jealous. She was afraid. But before Heaven could respond, someone bumped into her. Her books fell. “Sorry.” Heaven looked up. It was a student she didn’t recognize. He walked away quickly. Maya picked up the books. “Are you okay?” “Yes.” Heaven noticed something on the floor. A piece of paper. She picked it up. There was one sentence written on it. STOP LOOKING FOR THE DOOR. Her blood ran cold. Sierra saw it. “So they know.” “Who?” Sierra shook her head. “I don’t know.” Conrad approached. “What happened?” Heaven showed him the note. His expression changed. “Where did you get this?” “Someone dropped it.” He looked down the hallway. Nobody suspicious was there. “We’re leaving.” “What?” “Now.” He took Heaven’s hand. Sierra followed. Maya and Dylan followed too. They went behind the school building. Conrad looked at everyone. “We can’t keep pretending this is normal.” Dylan nodded. “Agreed.” Maya crossed her arms. “So what do we do?” “We find the person behind this.” Heaven looked at Sierra. “And the door.” Sierra nodded. “But we need to be careful.” Suddenly, a basketball came flying over the wall. Conrad caught it. Dylan laughed. “Practice isn’t over yet.” Conrad smiled. For a moment, everything felt normal again. They returned to the court. The boys practiced. Maya and Heaven sat nearby. Sierra stood with the cheerleaders. The game started. Heaven cheered when Conrad scored. He looked toward her and smiled. Sierra saw it. Her expression tightened. Later, during a break, Sierra walked toward Conrad. “You’re really doing this.” “Doing what?” “Falling for her.” Conrad stared at her. “Maybe.” Sierra looked away. “I wish you hadn’t.” He frowned. “Why?” “Because I know where this ends.” Conrad’s voice became serious. “Then tell me.” She looked at him. “I can’t.” “Why?” “Because if I tell you everything…” She swallowed. “…you’ll remember.” Conrad froze. “What?” Sierra walked away. That night, Conrad dreamed again. He was standing in front of the glowing door. But this time, someone was beside him. A little girl. He couldn’t see her face. She reached for the door. Then a voice whispered: “Remember.” Conrad woke up screaming. And for the first time in years… he remembered the girl’s face. Sierra’s sister.
