“Cassian!” I screamed the moment I burst through the infirmary doors.
But I stopped dead halfway across the room.
He wasn’t alone.
A woman lay unconscious in his arms, her body limp like a broken doll against his blood-stained chest. Cassian’s face—my mate’s face—was a raw storm of fear, desperation, and something far more intimate that twisted the knife in my chest.
“Get a stretcher!” he roared, voice cracking with panic I’d never heard from him before.
Three years of marriage. Three years of building a pack, fighting battles, sharing a bond… and I had never seen him like this. Not even when his own warriors fell on the battlefield.
The heat that had been tormenting me all day surged violently the second his scent hit me—dark pine, smoke, blood, and that deep, masculine musk that always unraveled me. My knees nearly buckled.
Fresh slick gushed between my thighs, soaking my clothes as my core clenched hard with sudden, agonizing need. My body didn’t care about the scene in front of me. It only recognized its Alpha, and it craved him.
I stood frozen, trembling, as he barreled past me without a single glance.
“Check her!” he snarled at the doctor the moment they laid the woman down. “If anything happens to her, I swear I’ll kill you myself!”
“Cassian, you need to calm down—” My voice came out thin and shaky, barely audible over the roar of my pulse and the growing throb between my legs.
He didn’t hear me. Or maybe he simply didn’t care.
Her injuries were minor. A broken leg, deep bruises, some lacerations—nothing life-threatening for a werewolf. Yet Cassian hovered like she was his entire world, trembling with raw terror.
The doctors worked quickly, setting her leg and cleaning her wounds, relying on her natural healing to do the rest. All the while, he sat beside her bed, eyes glued to her face as if she might vanish.
I crossed my arms tightly over my chest, nails biting into my skin, but the pain did nothing to dull the fire raging inside me. His scent kept washing over me in waves, making my heat spike higher, crueler.
My n*****s ached. My p***y throbbed emptily, clenching around nothing while slick continued to drip down my thighs. I wanted to hate how much I still needed him. I wanted to scream.
Thirty agonizing minutes passed in suffocating silence. My eyes stayed locked on him. His never left her.
She finally stirred, lashes fluttering.
“Cass…” she whispered, soft and breathy.
Cass.
Not Alpha. Not Cassian.
Just Cass.
He exhaled a broken sound of relief and leaned forward, cupping her face with a gentleness I hadn’t felt from him in weeks. “I’ve got you. You’re safe now.”
Then he took her hands and pressed reverent kisses to her knuckles, his eyes shining with open adoration.
They didn’t even notice me standing there.
The bond between us felt like it was splintering. My heat screamed for him, my body burning hotter than ever in his presence, while my heart shattered right in front of the man who was supposed to be mine.
Who the hell was this woman?
I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to work. “Cassian.”
He blinked, visibly annoyed at the interruption, then slowly stood and turned toward me. His expression smoothed into something carefully neutral, but his eyes betrayed him—glittering with guilt and a flicker of irritation.
“She?” I asked, refusing to look away.
His gaze darted between us before he reached down and took the woman’s hand again, cradling it like it was something precious. “Lyra…” he whispered, voice soft in a way that gutted me.
My heart slammed against my ribs. “This is Liora,” he said, meeting my eyes at last. “My fated mate.”
The floor tilted beneath me. I gripped the edge of the bed frame so tightly my knuckles went white, the only thing keeping me upright as another brutal wave of heat tore through me.
Cassian’s scent—now laced with the faint trace of hers—hit me like a drug. My core clenched painfully, slick flooding out of me in a shameful rush. My body was still desperate for him, even as my world crumbled.
“Fated mate?” The words tasted like ash. “We are mates. I’m your mate. Your Luna.”
Liora shifted uncomfortably on the bed, but Cassian didn’t let go of her hand.
“She has a rare healing ability,” he continued, as if that explained everything. “She’ll be incredibly useful to the pack.”
I stared at him, voice shaking. “What the hell is that supposed to mean, Cass?”
He straightened to his full height, the Alpha mask locking firmly into place. Cold. Detached. Unyielding.
“I wish to take Liora as my Luna as well.”
“I’m your Luna!” The words exploded out of me before I could stop them. Liora flinched, shrinking back against the pillows.
Cassian’s jaw tightened. “But you’re not my fated mate.”
The world narrowed to a sharp, ringing point. I stumbled backward, legs nearly buckling as the bond between us splintered violently.
My chest heaved, breath sawing in and out while fresh tears burned my eyes. This wasn’t the man I had built a life with. This wasn’t my Cassian.
“That’s why I’ve decided…” he went on, tone flat and emotionless, “we will have an open marriage. I will take her as my mate. She will hold the same position as you—my Luna.”
