THE FORGOTTEN SAGE Episode 5: The Price of Pride The first wave of water did not arrive like a river. It came like a beast. A thunderous roar rolled down from the eastern ridge as the barrier finally gave way. Trees snapped beneath the force of the rushing water, while enormous rocks were dragged through the gorge as though they weighed nothing. “RUN!” someone screamed. The people of Oakhaven did not need to be told twice. Guards hurried families away from the lower district as muddy water began spilling into the streets. Kaelen stood at the intersection near the old mill, directing people toward the upper roads. “This way!” he shouted. “Leave your belongings! Save yourselves!” Some listened. Others did not. A merchant named Doran fought desperately to drag a heavy iron chest from his shop. It contained years of savings, contracts, and precious Aether crystals. “Leave it!” Kaelen shouted. “I cannot!” “You will die for it!” Doran ignored him. Then the ground shook beneath his feet. The wall of his shop collapsed. Kaelen rushed forward and pulled the merchant away just moments before a torrent of mud swept through the building and carried the iron chest into the raging flood. Doran fell to his knees. “My fortune!” he cried. Kaelen looked at him sharply. “You still have your life.” --- Meanwhile, Silas stood near the edge of the market square, watching the flow of water. Mayor Vance approached him, his expensive clothes now covered in dust and mud. “The eastern district is being evacuated,” he said breathlessly. “What else can we do?” Silas pointed toward the northern road. “Close it.” “The northern road?” “Yes.” “But that is where the people are heading.” Silas turned toward him. “Exactly why it must be closed.” The Mayor stared at him in confusion. Silas grabbed a small handful of red soil from the ground and held it before him. “Look carefully.” Vance did. The soil was trembling. His face went pale. “The ground is moving.” “The mountain is saturated,” Silas said. “The water beneath the surface is forcing the earth downward. If everyone uses the northern road, the weight and vibration could trigger another collapse.” Mayor Vance looked toward the road. Hundreds of people were already moving in that direction. “What should we do?” “Send them through the western forest.” “The western forest?” Vance said. “That path is dangerous.” Silas's expression hardened. “Dangerous is not the same as deadly.” For a brief moment, Mayor Vance hesitated. That hesitation almost cost them everything. A sharp crack echoed from the northern road. Silas immediately turned. “MOVE THEM!” Mayor Vance finally shouted the order. Guards rushed forward, redirecting the frightened crowd toward the western forest. Barely a minute later, a section of the northern road collapsed into the earth. The Mayor stood frozen. If he had waited any longer, hundreds could have fallen with it. Slowly, he turned toward Silas. “How did you know?” Silas looked at the broken road. “Because the mountain has been trying to tell you.” --- Above them, the blue Aether-light continued to shine through the cracks in the eastern ridge. Master Boros stood beneath the council hall, staring at it with growing fear. “That shouldn't be possible,” he muttered. Kaelen approached him. “What shouldn't?” “The old mines were sealed decades ago.” “Then why is Aether leaking from the mountain?” Boros did not answer. Instead, he began walking quickly toward the council archives. Kaelen grabbed his arm. “Where are you going?” “To find out what the council has been hiding.” --- Silas watched Boros disappear. Something about his words troubled him. The old mines were sealed decades ago. Silas had heard those words before. Long ago. In another place. Another life. Suddenly, a memory flashed through his mind. A stone chamber. Men dressed in dark robes. A glowing blue crystal suspended above an ancient map. And a voice saying: “If the mountain ever wakes, find the Sage.” Silas staggered backward. Kaelen rushed toward him. “Silas! What is wrong?” Silas placed his hand against his head. For years, his past had been nothing but scattered shadows. He remembered surviving. He remembered hunger. He remembered waking alone near the Whispering Woods with no family and no explanation of how he had arrived there. But now— The shadows were beginning to speak. Silas looked toward the mountain. His eyes were filled with fear and recognition. “I think,” he said slowly, “I have been here before.” Another explosion shook Oakhaven. This time, the sound did not come from the ridge. It came from beneath the town. The ground opened. And from the darkness below, blue light began to rise. To be continued...
