"Good question, kid," I murmured under my breath. "Why indeed?"
I stood frozen, toothpaste tube still in my hand, as Lily's innocent question pierced straight through my defenses.
Why would we change schools?The answer caught in my throat.
Here I was, the same woman who had repeatedly promised never to let adult problems affect Lily's life, doing exactly that.
My daughter had adapted to her preschool, loved her teachers, her friends, the routine we'd built together.
And now, because of my discomfort, I was considering uprooting her.
It wasn't fair to her. Not in the slightest.
