The gates of the Obsidian Keep loomed before them, towering black iron carved with ancient runes that pulsed with faint silver light.
Clara's heart hammered in her chest as they rode through the entrance. The courtyard was vast, filled with Lycan warriors training with swords and spears. They stopped as she passed, their amber and gold eyes fixed on her with open curiosity.
They're staring at me, she thought, fighting the urge to shrink away.
Darius's hand found hers, squeezing gently. "Hold your head high," he murmured. "You are their Queen now. Look them in the eyes."
Clara took a deep breath and lifted her chin. She met the gaze of the nearest warrior, a massive Lycan with silver-streaked hair and a scar across his jaw. He bowed his head slightly, a sign of respect.
She nodded back.
I can do this, she told herself. I am not an Omega anymore.
The castle's interior was even more magnificent than the outside.
Marble floors gleamed under chandeliers of black crystal. Tapestries depicting ancient battles hung on the walls. The air was cool and smelled of incense and old stone.
Clara walked beside Darius, her hand still in his. She felt small and out of place in her simple tunic, surrounded by opulence.
"Your chambers are prepared," Darius said, leading her up a sweeping staircase. "You will have your own suite until the bonding ceremony."
"Bonding ceremony?" Clara asked, her cheeks flushing.
"Lycan tradition," he said, a hint of amusement in his voice. "When two mates unite, we perform a ritual to seal the bond. It is... sacred."
Clara's blush deepened. She understood what he meant.
"When will it happen?" she asked quietly.
"Whenever you are ready," Darius said. "I will not rush you, Clara. You have been through enough."
She looked up at him, grateful for his patience. "Thank you."
He smiled and squeezed her hand.
Clara's chambers were a dream.
A massive four-poster bed dominated the room, draped in deep crimson velvet. A fireplace crackled warmly in the corner. A balcony overlooked the mountains, the view breathtaking.
A maid, a young Lycan woman with kind eyes—helped her bathe and dress in proper clothes. The gown was deep blue silk, embroidered with silver thread that sparkled like stars.
Clara stared at her reflection in the mirror.
She looked like a Queen.
Is this really me?
Her brown hair was brushed and pinned elegantly. Her skin glowed with health. And her eyes, those strange, beautiful eyes now held flecks of permanent silver.
She touched the crescent moon necklace around her neck. Her mother's necklace. The only thing she had left of her old life.
"Your mother was Lycan, wasn't she?" the maid asked softly.
Clara looked up, surprised. "How did you know?"
"The necklace," the maid said. "It is a royal crest. The crescent moon is the symbol of the royal Lycan family."
Clara's hand flew to the pendant. "I... I didn't know."
"Your mother must have been a princess," the maid said. "Or perhaps even a Queen."
Clara's mind raced. Her mother had always been gentle, quiet. She had never spoken of her past. She had died when Clara was five, leaving behind only the necklace and a few whispered words.
Keep this with you always, my little star. It will protect you when the time comes.
Now she understood.
Darius returned later that evening to escort her to dinner.
Clara's nerves were frayed. The thought of meeting the Lycan court, of being judged by so many powerful wolves, made her stomach churn.
Darius seemed to sense her anxiety. He placed a warm hand on her back as they walked.
"You have nothing to fear," he said. "I will be with you the entire time."
"I don't know how to act," she admitted. "I don't know the proper etiquette or..."
"There is no wrong way," he said. "Just be yourself. That is all I ask."
Clara took a shaky breath and nodded.
The great hall was packed.
Lycan lords and ladies filled the long tables, their eyes turning to her as she entered. They whispered behind their hands, their expressions a mix of curiosity, skepticism, and awe.
Clara walked beside Darius, her spine straight, her chin held high. She channeled every ounce of courage she possessed.
Darius led her to the head of the table, where two ornate chairs sat side by side. He pulled one out for her, and she sat, her hands trembling in her lap.
Darius sat beside her and raised his goblet.
"Presenting my mate," he announced, his voice echoing through the hall. "Clara Wright, Princess of the Lycan bloodline."
A murmur ran through the crowd. Some eyes widened. Others narrowed.
"The Lycan bloodline?" a noble woman repeated, her voice dripping with skepticism. "I thought that line had ended centuries ago."
Clara's jaw tightened. She was about to speak, but Darius beat her to it.
"The line has not ended," Darius said coolly. "Clara is the last living heir. Her mother was a Lycan princess who fled to the mortal world to escape persecution."
"Fled?" the woman said. "How convenient. And we are simply to accept this stranger as our Queen?"
Darius's eyes glowed gold. "You will accept her," he said, his voice low and dangerous, "because I have accepted her. And anyone who questions my mate questions me."
A heavy silence fell over the hall.
Clara looked at the noblewoman, a tall, elegant Lycan with cold gray eyes. The woman's disdain was obvious.
She doesn't believe me, Clara thought. None of them do.
But she knew the truth. Her mother's necklace, her silver eyes, the royal blood that sang in her veins. She was Lycan royalty. She didn't need their approval.
She stood up, surprising everyone.
"Lady," Clara said, her voice calm and clear. "I understand your skepticism. But I do not need your belief. The Moon Goddess has chosen me as Darius's mate. That is all the proof I need."
The noble woman's eyes widened. She hadn't expected Clara to speak.
"If you have questions," Clara continued, "ask them now. I will answer as best I can."
A murmur of approval ran through the hall. The noble woman looked flustered.
"Where did you grow up?" she asked finally. "What pack raised you?"
"The Blackwood Pack," Clara said. "I was an Omega there."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. An Omega? Future Queen of the Lycans?
"Yes," Clara said, reading their thoughts. "I was an Omega. The lowest of the low. But I am not that person anymore." She touched her necklace. "My Lycan blood has awakened. I am the last princess of your ancient line. And I will prove myself worthy of this title."
She looked at Darius, who was watching her with pride in his amber eyes.
"Give me time," she said to the court. "And I will show you who I truly am."
After dinner, Darius escorted Clara to the balcony outside her chambers.
They stood in silence for a long moment, staring at the star-filled sky. The mountains stretched before them, dark and majestic.
"You were magnificent," Darius said finally. "They will never question you again."
Clara let out a shaky breath. "I was terrified."
"Terrified or not, you stood up for yourself. That takes courage, Clara. You have more of it than you know."
She laughed softly. "I don't feel courageous. I feel like a fraud."
Darius turned to face her, his amber eyes intense. "You are not a fraud. You are the most extraordinary woman I have ever met. And in time, you will believe it too."
Clara looked up at him, her heart swelling with emotion.
"Why me?" she whispered. "Of all the women you could have had, why me?"
Darius stepped closer, his hand coming up to cup her cheek. His touch was warm, gentle.
"Because you are my mate," he said. "Because you survived what would have broken anyone else. Because you are strong, fierce, and beautiful. Because" He paused, his thumb brushing across her cheek. "Because you make me feel alive."
Clara's breath caught.
"May I kiss you?" Darius asked softly. "If you are not ready, I will"
Clara rose on her toes and pressed her lips to his.
The kiss was soft at first, tentative. But then Darius deepened it, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her close. Clara melted into him, her fingers threading through his dark hair.
It was like nothing she had ever felt before warm, electric, right.
When they finally parted, both of them were breathing heavily.
"I have waited a century for that," Darius murmured.
Clara laughed, a genuine, joyful sound.
"Wait a little longer for the bonding ceremony," she teased. "I want to do this properly."
Darius smiled a rare, beautiful smile.
"As you wish, my Queen."
That night, Clara lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling.
Her mother's necklace rested against her chest, warm and comforting. She touched it, thinking of all the years she had carried it without knowing its true meaning.
You were a princess, Mama, she thought. Why didn't you tell me?
But she knew the answer. Her mother had been hiding, fleeing from enemies who wanted the Lycan line to end forever.
They almost succeeded, Clara thought. I was raised as an Omega, forgotten, worthless. But I survived.
She closed her eyes and let the exhaustion wash over her.
Tomorrow, her training will begin. Darius had promised to teach her everything: how to fight, how to control her Lycan power, and how to rule.
She had a long road ahead.
But for the first time in her life, Clara felt hope.
