Darius sat alone in his war chamber, staring at the map spread across the obsidian table.
The Kingdom of Lycans had stood for a thousand years, built on blood and bone by his ancestors. He was the most powerful Lycan to ever live. His wolf, Aurelius, was ancient and fierce.
And for a century, Aurelius had been silent.
Darius had long accepted that he would never find his fated mate. Lycan Kings were cursed that way too powerful, too rare. It was a price he had paid willingly for his throne.
Until tonight.
The pain had hit him like a thunderbolt. A searing, burning sensation in his chest. And then Aurelius had spoken.
Mate. Find her. Protect her. Kill anyone who touched her.
Darius's amber eyes blazed with gold light. His claws extended involuntarily. His Lycan was awake truly awake for the first time in a hundred years.
Now, hours later, Darius sat with his generals gathered around him.
"Your Majesty," General Theron said cautiously, "Lycan Kings rarely find mates. It has been centuries since"
"Aurelius does not lie," Darius cut him off. "My mate is out there, and she is in danger."
He could feel her a faint connection, fragile and new. She was wounded. Someone had hurt her. Someone had rejected her.
"Send scouts to every corner of the kingdom," Darius commanded. "Search the pack territories, the rogue lands. Bring her to me."
"The rogue lands are vast and dangerous," another general said. "If your mate is there, she may not survive."
Darius rose from his chair. His eyes glowed gold. "Then I will go myself."
The forest was dark and treacherous.
Clara walked for hours, her bare feet bleeding on sharp rocks. The silver glow from her eyes illuminated the path. Her body was still healing from the rejection, but the new bond pulsed in her chest like a second heartbeat.
Come to me. A voice whispered in her mind. I am coming for you.
The Lycan King.
A rustle in the bushes made her freeze.
Her wolf stirred, alert. Rogue wolves three, maybe four. Their scent was feral and hungry.
They've been tracking me.
The first rogue lunged out of the darkness.
He was huge, with matted fur and yellow teeth. Clara dove to the side, her body moving faster than ever. His claws raked through the air inches from her face.
She scrambled to her feet. Her wolf howled inside her, demanding she fight.
I don't know how to
The rogue lunged again.
Something inside her snapped. Clara's eyes blazed silver. She thrust her hands forward, and a wave of energy exploded from her palms. The rogue flew backward, crashing into a tree.
The others emerged from the shadows, snarling. There were three of them, larger than the first. They circled her.
"Well, well," one growled. "A little Omega, all alone. What's a pretty thing like you doing out here?"
"She smells different," another said. "Powerful."
"Doesn't matter," the first snarled. "We'll have some fun with her, then eat what's left."
Clara's blood ran cold. But her wolf was not afraid.
Kill them. Kill them all.
She stood up straight. Her silver eyes glowed brighter, power crackling around her fingertips.
"I am not what I seem," she said calmly. "You're making a mistake."
The rogues laughed. Then they attacked.
Clara moved like water, dodging claws and fangs. Her attacks were raw and instinctive blasts of silver light, swipes of glowing claws. The first rogue went down with a shattered jaw. The second followed. The third tried to flee, but she threw him into a tree.
Within minutes, all four rogues lay unconscious.
Clara stood panting, her silver eyes flickering. She looked down at her bloodied hands rogue blood, not her own.
I did that. She bent over and vomited.
When she straightened up, she felt different. Lighter. Stronger. The hollow emptiness was gone, replaced by burning determination.
She would survive. She would find the Lycan King. And Killian would pay.
Darius rode through the night, his warriors behind him.
She is close, Aurelius said. To the east. In the rogue lands.
Faster, Darius commanded.
They rode for another hour. The scent of blood filled the air.
She fought, Aurelius said. She was killed.
Is she hurt?
No. But she is tired. Afraid. Alone.
Darius's heart ached with fierce, possessive anger. Someone had hurt his mate. He would tear them apart.
They emerged into a clearing. Four rogue wolves lay broken on the ground. And in the middle stood a girl.
She was small and thin, with tangled brown hair and a tattered dress. Her skin was pale, her cheek bruised, her feet bare and bleeding.
But her eyes... they were silver. Lycan silver.
She looked up at him, fierce and unyielding. Afraid, but refusing to show it.
Darius dismounted slowly.
She is ours, Aurelius whispered. Our mate. Our Queen.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"I am Darius," he said, his voice deep with emotion. "King of the Lycans."
Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn't bow.
"I know who you are," she said. "I saw you in my vision."
"What is your name?" he asked.
"Clara. Clara Wright."
He reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. She flinched but didn't pull away.
"You are my mate," he said. "I have searched for you for a century."
Clara stared at him, her silver eyes flickering with disbelief and hope.
"I was rejected," she whispered. "By my Alpha. He threw me out like garbage."
Darius's eyes blazed with fury. "Tell me his name. I will kill him."
"No," she said. "He is mine."
He looked at her with admiration. She was fierce. Brave. The perfect mate for a Lycan King.
"Then I will help you," he said. "Together, we will make him pay."
Clara placed her hand on his chest. "Promise me. Promise you will never reject me."
Darius lifted her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "I swear it on my crown. You are my Queen. My mate. My everything."
The bond between them flared to life, golden and bright.
And for the first time, Clara felt like she belonged.
