The Training Begins

1424 Words
Clara woke before dawn, her body humming with restless energy. The Obsidian Keep was silent, the halls empty save for the occasional patrol of Lycan warriors. She dressed quickly in the training clothes the maid had left for her black leather trousers, a fitted tunic, and boots that lace to her knees. She was ready. Darius had promised to train her, to teach her how to control her Lycan power. She had been waiting for this moment since the day she arrived at the Keep. He was waiting for her in the training yard. The yard was massive, surrounded by high stone walls covered in climbing ivy. Training dummies lined the perimeter, their straw bodies battered and worn. Weapons racks gleamed with swords, axes, and spears. Darius stood in the center, his arms crossed over his broad chest. He wore simple training clothes, his dark hair tied back from his face. His amber eyes lit up when he saw her. "You're early," he said, a hint of approval in his voice. "I couldn't sleep," Clara admitted. "I've been waiting for this." He smiled a rare, genuine smile that softened his fierce features. "Then let's begin." The first lesson was about control. "Your Lycan blood is powerful," Darius said, circling her slowly. "But power without control is dangerous. You need to learn to command it, not let it command you." Clara nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. "Close your eyes," he instructed. "Feel the power inside you. It's there, waiting. Don't fight it. Welcome." Clara closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She felt immediately a warm, golden energy pulsing in her chest. Her Lycan blood, ancient and powerful, humming beneath her skin. "Good," Darius said. "Now, let it flow through you. Let it fill your veins, your muscles, your bones. Let it become part of you." Clara focused on the warmth, letting it spread through her body. It was like liquid fire, intense but not painful. She felt stronger, faster, more alive than she had ever felt. "Open your eyes," Darius said. She obeyed. Her vision was sharper, clearer. She could see the individual leaves on the ivy, the tiny cracks in the stone walls. She could hear Darius's heartbeat, steady and strong. "Your eyes are silver," he said softly. "That's the mark of a true Lycan." Clara looked down at her hands. They were normal, but she could feel the power coiling beneath her skin, ready to be unleashed. "Now," Darius said, his voice hardening. "Let's see what you can do." The second lesson was about fighting. Darius handed her a wooden practice sword. "You've never trained before, have you?" "No," Clara admitted. "I was an Omega. We weren't allowed to fight." "Then we start from the beginning." He moved behind her, positioning her hands on the hilt of the sword. His touch was warm, his body close. Clara felt a shiver run down her spine. "Keep your feet shoulder-width apart," he instructed. "Your knees are slightly bent. Balance is everything." Clara adjusted her stance, trying to ignore the heat of his body against her back. "Good," he said. "Now, when you swing, use your entire body, not just your arms. The power comes from your core." He stepped back, and Clara felt the loss of his warmth immediately. "Show me." Clara swung the practice sword, putting all her strength into the motion. The blade cut through the air with a satisfying whoosh. "Not bad," Darius said. "But you're still using too much arm. Try again." They practiced for hours. Clara's muscles burned, her palms blistered, but she refused to give up. She had spent eighteen years being weak. She was done with weakness. By midday, she was exhausted but exhilarated. "You're a natural," Darius said, handing her a waterskin. "Most warriors train for months before they reach your level." Clara took a long drink, her chest heaving. "I had a good teacher." Darius smiled. "You have a good student." The third lesson was about shifting. "The shifting process is different for everyone," Darius explained, sitting beside her on a stone bench. "Some shift easily, naturally. Others struggle." "How do I do it?" "You have to want it," he said. "Really want it. Your wolf is a part of you, you just need to let her out." Clara closed her eyes and reached for her wolf. She could feel her there, a warm presence in the back of her mind. She had been weak and malnourished before Clara's Lycan blood awakened. Now she was strong, fierce, and eager to be free. Let me out, her wolf growled. Let me out! Clara focused on the feeling, letting it build and grow. Her skin began to tingle, her bones shifting and cracking. Pain lanced through her body and then, suddenly, she was looking through different eyes. Her vision was sharper, her senses more acute. She could smell the earth, the grass, the sweat on Darius's skin. She could hear his heartbeat, faster than before. "Clara?" Darius's voice was filled with wonder. "You did it." She looked down at her hands, no, her paws. They were covered in silver fur, tipped with sharp claws. She had shifted. Completely. I did it, she thought. I actually did it. Darius approached slowly, his hand outstretched. Clara sniffed his palm, her wolf recognizing him. Safe. Trusted. Mate. "You're magnificent," he said softly, his hand stroking her fur. "Absolutely magnificent." Clara let out a low, happy growl, nuzzling against his palm. The shift back was harder. Clara's body seemed reluctant to return to human form, her wolf wanting to stay free. But with Darius's guidance, she focused and forced the shift. When she was human again, she collapsed in his arms. "I did it," she whispered, her voice trembling with exhaustion. Darius held her close, his hand stroking her hair. "Yes, you did. I'm so proud of you." Clara felt tears prick at her eyes. She couldn't remember the last time someone had told her they were proud of her. "Thank you," she said softly. "For what?" "For teaching me. For believing in me. For giving me a chance to be more than what I was." Darius pulled back, his amber eyes meeting hers. "Clara, you were always more. You just needed someone to show you." That evening, Clara sat in her chambers, staring at her reflection. Her eyes were still silver; they had been permanently changed by her Lycan blood. Her skin glowed with health, her hair was shiny and full. She looked like a different person. But it was her heart that had truly changed. She touched the necklace around her neck, her mother's necklace, the royal crest of the Lycan family. She thought about everything her mother had given up to protect her, everything she had sacrificed. I will make you proud, Mama, she promised. I will be the Queen you always wanted me to be. A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. "Come in," she said. Darius entered, a small velvet box in his hand. "I have something for you." Clara's eyes widened. "What is it?" He knelt in front of her, opening the box. Inside lay a ring, a band of silver, set with a crescent moon-shaped sapphire. "Before the bonding ceremony," he said, his voice soft, "I wanted to give you this. To show you that I'm committed to you, Clara. Not just as my mate but as my equal. My partner. My Queen." Clara's breath caught. "Darius..." "I know this isn't official," he said quickly. "But I wanted to give you something to show you that I'm serious. That I'm not going anywhere." Clara reached out, her fingers brushing against the ring. It was beautiful, the sapphire glowing in the candlelight. "It's beautiful," she whispered. Darius took her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. "Until the bonding ceremony," he said, lifting her hand to his lips. "And forever after." Clara pulled him into a kiss, pouring all her gratitude and love into the gesture. Darius responded immediately, pulling her close, deepening the kiss. When they finally parted, both were breathless. "I love you, Clara," Darius said softly. "I know it's fast. I know we've only known each other for a short time. But I've waited a century for you. And I will wait another century if I have to." Clara's eyes filled with tears. "I love you too, Darius." He smiled that beautiful, rare smile that made her heart flutter. "Then let's build a future together."
