The Aftermath

625 Words
The battlefield was silent. Clara stood amidst the c*****e, her silver eyes scanning the fallen warriors. The scent of blood hung heavy in the air, mixing with the smoke from the fires that still burned in the distance. The battle was over. Killian was dead. But the cost had been devastating. Darius appeared beside her, his amber eyes filled with concern. "Clara, are you alright?" She looked up at him, her expression hollow. "I killed him." "I know." "He was my mate once. He was the father of my child. And I killed him." Darius pulled her into his arms, holding her close. "You did what you had to do. He would have killed you if you hadn't." Clara buried her face in his chest, letting the tears fall. She had dreamed of this moment for months. She had imagined Killian's defeat, his downfall, his death. She had thought it would bring her peace. It didn't. "I feel empty," she admitted. "I thought killing him would make me feel better. But I just feel... nothing." "Give it time," Darius said softly. "The pain will fade. And eventually, you'll find peace." The journey back to the Obsidian Keep was long and somber. Clara rode in silence, her mind replaying the events of the battle over and over. Killian's face. His final words. The way his eyes had widened when her dagger found his heart. She should have felt triumphant. She didn't. Darius stayed close to her the entire time, his presence a constant comfort. He didn't try to fill the silence with empty words. He just let her grieve in her own way. When they finally reached the Keep, Clara retreated to her chambers. She needed to be alone. That night, she dreamed of Killian. He was young again, the boy she had fallen in love with before the cruelty had consumed him. He smiled at her, his eyes warm and kind. "Clara," he said, reaching out his hand. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." "Killian..." she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I should have been better," he said. "I should have loved you the way you deserved. But I was weak. And now I'll never have the chance." "Where are you?" "Somewhere far away," he said. "But I wanted you to know... I loved you once. Before everything went wrong. I loved you with all my heart." Clara reached out to touch his face, but he faded away, dissolving into mist. She woke with a gasp, tears streaming down her cheeks. Darius was there in an instant, his arms wrapping around her. "I'm here, Clara. I'm here." "He visited me," she sobbed. "Killian. He came to me in a dream." "What did he say?" "He said he loved me. He said he was sorry." Darius held her close, stroking her hair. "He loved you once. But that doesn't excuse what he did." "I know. But it still hurts." "It will. For a long time. But you're not alone, Clara. I'm here. And I'll always be here." Clara looked up at him, her silver eyes filled with gratitude. "I don't deserve you." Darius smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "You deserve everything, Clara. Everything and more." The next morning, Clara woke with a new sense of purpose. She had mourned Killian. She had forgiven herself for killing him. Now it was time to move forward. She walked to the training yard, where Darius was already waiting for her. "Ready?" he asked. Clara nodded, a small smile on her face. "Ready." She picked up a sword and began to train, her movements fluid and confident. She wasn't the broken Omega she had been. She wasn't the grieving widow she had been yesterday. She was a Queen.
