Kai shoved Tamara hard sending her sprawling to the left just as the Victor-thing's metal claws sliced through the air where she'd been standing. Instead of flesh, the claws tore into the bone shelves, sending ancient books to dust. “Stairs! Now!” Kai yelled, grabbing Tamara's hand. But the Victor-thing was too fast. It leaped over them, landing between them and the stairs. Its red eyes spun like some broken camera. “No escape,” it rasped, oil dribbling down its mouth. “DSC wants the Bridge alive. The wolf can die.” It swung at Kai. He barely dodged it, the claws snagged his already-hurt shoulder, tearing deeper.
