Chapter Twenty-eight
Charlie was clipping an overall strap when EJ sat up. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
EJ asked, “What about Belle?”
“All of us have the evening off. Mary insisted on taking tonight.”
“But what if something happens?”
Charlie looked thoughtful. “Then she will be blessed to go in her sleep.”
“Where are you going? It must be midnight.”
“Yes. Do you want to come with me? I have something to show you. You’ll have to walk some.” Charlie slid on her boots.
EJ managed to dress herself. Her arm was getting stronger, but the ankle presented a problem. “I can’t stand on this foot.”
“They’ll start without me. Have a seat.”
Charlie eased the shoe onto EJ’s swollen foot. She took two pieces of wood from the bin by the fireplace and lined them along her leg.
“Hold these.”
