Chapter Thirty-six When Charlie came in the back door, she could see the light in the parlor. She grabbed a bottle of wine and two glasses. She set them on the table, popped the bottle, and filled both goblets half full. Charlie raised her glass. “A toast to new beginnings.” EJ lifted her glass, draining it in one gulp. Charlie snuggled next to her on the couch, absently stroking EJ’s hair. Charlie said, “Penny for your thoughts.” “Belle used to say that.” “Yes, she did. Are you okay?” Charlie slid her hand onto EJ’s lap, gently squeezing. EJ was an open book as far as her emotions went. She’d be lousy at poker. But this expression she couldn’t read.
