She followed the sergeant and the rest of the unlucky volunteers down the lines past the hospital tent. A large man was sawing off a soldier’s leg while five men held him. She knew he’d been given chloroform, but he still writhed as he was cut. She turned away. “Just be glad it isn’t your leg,” Sarge said. As they turned the corner, she saw a pile of arms and legs and without warning began to vomit. She managed to miss her boots. Sarge patted her on the back. He said, “It happens to most of us when we see the elephant.” “See the elephant” was the phrase they used for new recruits their first time
