CHAPTER 4:THE OFFER

1315 Words
The office was silent, except for the faint hum of the city below. Emma had stayed behind late, pretending to finish reports, but her nerves had been on edge all evening. She knew when Lucas called her after hours, it wasn’t going to be casual. “Emma,” his voice came from the office doorway. Calm. Serious. She looked up, startled. “Yes, sir?” He gestured for her to enter. The office felt different at this hour. The harsh brightness of the day was replaced by soft lamplight. Shadows stretched across the walls, and for the first time, the room didn’t feel entirely oppressive—it felt heavy, tense, like the weight of secrets pressing down. Emma stepped in, closing the door behind her. She held her bag tightly, unsure why he had called her here. “Sit,” he said, without looking up from the papers in front of him. Emma lowered herself into the chair, trying to appear calm, though her stomach was tight with anxiety. Lucas finally looked up. His dark eyes met hers, sharp and steady. “Emma,” he began, leaning back slightly, “I have a problem.” She blinked. “A problem?” “Yes. My family is threatening to cut my inheritance unless I settle down. Marry someone suitable.” He didn’t smile. He didn’t even pause. “They expect me to have a fiancée within six months. Or lose everything.” Emma swallowed. She had known Lucas’s life was complicated, but this… this was different. “And… you want my advice?” she asked cautiously. “No.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “I want a solution. You, Emma.” Her heart skipped a beat. “Me?” “Yes,” he said, flat, as if the idea was obvious. “I want you to pretend to be my fiancée.” Emma froze, staring at him. “Excuse me?” “You heard me,” he said. “For six months, publicly, we are engaged. Attend family events, dinners, appearances… all of it. And you will be compensated.” Her mind reeled. She blinked, trying to process what he was saying. “Why me? Out of all women? Why would you… even—” Lucas held up a hand, cutting her off. “Don’t ask. I’ve thought this through. You’re competent, discreet, and you can follow instructions. That’s what matters. The rest… doesn’t.” Emma’s chest tightened. This was insane. Pretend to be engaged to the man she had feared, respected, and tried so hard not to annoy for six months? And all for… money? Lucas’s gaze softened just a fraction, and he leaned forward slightly. “The money… I’ll pay you enough to cover your mother’s medical bills. Everything. You’ll be free of that worry.” Her breath caught. Her mother’s surgery, the hospital bills, the constant debt it was all she had feared for months. Her throat tightened, and she blinked quickly to stop her eyes from watering. “That… that’s a lot,” she managed, her voice trembling slightly. He nodded. “It’s a fair offer. You’ll be compensated for every inconvenience, every risk. All I ask is that you follow the rules of this arrangement.” Emma’s mind raced. She felt the pull of desperation and the pull of danger at the same time. Pretending to be his fiancée… it was risky. Lucas Steele was untouchable, impossible, a man who commanded respect and fear. One wrong move and she could ruin everything. “And… the rules?” she asked cautiously. “Simple,” he said. “Six months. Public appearances. No emotional entanglement. Behave as my fiancée when necessary. Follow instructions. Nothing more, nothing less.” She looked at him, trying to find any sign of jest or trickery. There was none. His expression was unreadable, controlled, precise. “And if I refuse?” she asked, her voice shaking slightly despite her efforts. Lucas shrugged lightly. “Then the offer is off. You walk away with nothing. Your mother still has her bills. That’s all. The choice is yours, Emma.” She bit her lip, considering. The temptation of the money was overwhelming. But the danger pretending, being close, having to navigate his sharp mind every single day was terrifying. Her fingers tightened around the edge of her chair. She had come this far, had survived months of his impossible standards, and now he was offering her a deal that could solve all her problems but at what cost? “Sir…” she started, her voice almost a whisper. “Why me? Why not someone else?” Lucas leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. “Because I trust you. More than anyone else in this office. You’re careful. Observant. You know how to follow instructions.” Emma’s heart raced. Trust from Lucas Steele? That was… surprising. Dangerous, maybe, but still… a compliment she wasn’t sure she wanted. “And… if I agree?” she asked finally. Her voice was soft, tentative, hesitant. “Then you’ll do exactly as I say. You’ll attend every event, smile when you’re told, and remain… discreet. In return, your mother gets financial freedom. You get your life back.” She stared at him, mind spinning, heart pounding. Her mother’s face flashed in her mind her worried smile, the way she had tried to hide her exhaustion. Emma had promised herself she would do anything to protect her. Anything. “And if I refuse,” she said again, feeling her pulse quicken, “everything stays the same. I—my mother—” “Yes,” he said softly. “Nothing changes. You get nothing. Your mother still has the debts.” Her fingers dug into the armrests of the chair. The choice was clear. The risk was enormous, the situation dangerous. Yet… she felt a strange pull. Desperation, fear, and the weight of responsibility for her mother’s life pressed down on her. Emma swallowed hard, her mind battling itself. “Six months…” she whispered. Lucas’s gaze never wavered. “Six months. That’s all. And remember,” he added quietly, “you’re not just doing this for money. You’re doing it to survive. And sometimes survival requires taking risks.” Her chest tightened. She felt torn between danger and desperation, between fear and necessity. The office around her seemed colder, darker, and more impossible than ever. Yet, somewhere beneath the anxiety, a small spark of determination ignited. She could do this. She had to. For her mother. Emma looked up at Lucas, meeting his gaze fully, trying to read any hidden intentions behind his calm, unreadable expression. “I… I’ll think about it,” she said carefully, trying to steady her voice. Lucas nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. “You have twenty-four hours. That’s all. After that, the offer stands or it doesn’t.” Emma nodded again, standing slowly, her mind racing faster than ever. She walked out of the office, her heart pounding, and closed the door behind her. Alone in the hallway, she pressed her back against the wall and exhaled shakily. The offer money enough to save her mother, a dangerous fake engagement, Lucas Steele watching her every move it was overwhelming. She wrapped her arms around herself, torn between the risk and the reward, unsure of how to decide. The choice lay heavy on her shoulders, and she knew one wrong move could ruin everything. Her fingers brushed against the USB drive in her bag, a reminder of the risks she had already been taking. And now, Lucas was asking her to take an even bigger one. Emma closed her eyes, whispering to herself, “I have to do this… I have to.” Her mind was spinning, her heart pounding, and for the first time, she realized that nothing in her life would ever be simple again.
