Amos POV
I wondered what Misty was doing. I mean I always wondered what she was doing. But she has been gone for months. I never did feel the betrayal pains after that one time. I wouldn’t sleep with any other women knowing the mental t*****e that would put her through. Being completely ignorant of our customs I’m sure she thinks that she can’t feel my transgressions since she rejected me. She would feel less but I still held onto the tether that binds us.
In the last few months I had challenged my father and won. I banished him and his former beta and gamma from the pack. The men were sleazy and suggested I reject my mate ‘for the good of the pack’. Both Ceder and I snarled at the memory. No we wouldn’t let her go. We needed to fix this.
‘Have you heard from the witches clan?’ I asked Nate- my new beta once he returned.
‘Yes. They said they aren’t interested in working with wolves. Our emotions get the better of us’
‘I expected that… but did you find her?’
‘I have a few leads I intend to follow. She is a tricky one to track down however’
He was looking down at his feet. Obviously nervous of how I would react. I just nodded at him and sent him away. Getting upset wouldn’t do me any good. I needed to focus on what was important. If you wondered who the ‘she’ was that we were looking for- Esmeralda. She was a dark witch. One who was isolated and abandoned many years ago and had wrecked havoc upon her clan for many decades.
Couldn’t say I wasn’t surprised. I’m sure if Misty could she would curse all of us as well. Unfortunately my pack didn’t deserve her wrath. It was my fathers and my burden to carry alone. Although my father felt no remorse for ruining my shot at having my true mate. Why would he- when my mother was around she was just a chosen mate. He didn’t care about her- he just wanted an heir. Once I was born, she was of little use to him.
I did always wonder if my father killed my mother. She was just gone one day when I was 6. When I did ask my father what happened he told me she abandoned us and ran away with another man. I just took that as it was. Now looking back I realize things may have not been as simple. He hadn’t ever truly loved anyone other than himself. Even me; his son- I was only a pawn in his game.
Lost in my thoughts I didn’t realize I wasn’t alone until I heard a snicker. When I turned I was faced with a woman cloaked in black. Black smoke seemed to flow out from under her. When she raised her head I got sight of her truly. She was somehow both beautiful and hideous. Beautiful lips with razor sharp teeth, a straight although too long nose, and eyes that while wide stared beyond your soul. I sucked in a breathe as we stared at each other.
‘I received word you were looking for me, alpha?’ She looked innocent but I heard the way ‘alpha’ dripped with hatred.
‘Yes… yes I need help. A favor to-‘ i started but she held up her hand
‘I don’t do favors, boy. I will make a trade depending on what you need’ she stared at me with interest but I felt like she already knew what I wanted.
‘A trade then yes. My mate her name is Misty. She rejected me and left for the fae realm. I want- no I NEED her back’ I felt Ceder stirring underneath as well. He hadn’t bothered interacting with me much since Misty left. But he looked at Esmeralda with curiosity and hope?
‘Yes well as I’m sure you’ve already discovered- the fae realm is a hard place to find. Even more difficult to reach. She must have been rather determined to leave if she took such a perilous journey so soon after coming of age’
‘What do you mean? She was physically fine when she left here’ she actually laughed at that.
‘Boy I’ve seen countless shifters coming of age. Fairies have it the most difficult. They are basically reborn. And as much physical healing her and her wolf required I’m sure she was barely managing to stand.’
I thought back on the moment she left me. The rejection seemed so effortless for her. She did seem to sway and have a hard time standing. I remember how my heart nearly leapt out of my chest when I saw her jump. She seemed to be hell bent on getting away from me, even if it killed her.
‘Is that why I can’t feel her? She…’ I paused ‘she didn’t make it?’ I felt Ceder thrash in my head at even the idea of his mate being lost to him forever.
‘No. She is very much alive although for the last couple months she has been sleeping. Restoring her energy’
‘But I felt it- I felt a betrayal pain. She must have been awake for that’
She stared at me apologetically. And I felt pure rage burn beneath my skin. It nearly sent Ceder on a rampage to hear that something awful could have happened to his mate. She waited until we both calmed ourselves to continue
‘I’ve watched your past and present. With how brief the pains lasted I assume someone stopped them before they were able to truly do anything too major’
It didn’t stop the pain that grew in our heart about what someone could have done to her. I stared at the witch trying to figure out what her game was.
‘I’ll do anything to get her back. Just tell me what I need to do’ I begged.
‘I can’t steal her from the realm. They would feel my magic immediately and I would be hunted. However. I can turn back the clock. I can bring her back to the day she was brought her.’
‘And what do I need to do it return?’ I breathed out
‘We’ll make a blood pact. A deal of sorts.’
I mulled over her words only temporarily. Blood pacts were serious and a deal with a witch could cost me my whole pack and my life. But I didn’t care. My pack wasn’t a pack without its Luna. And I wasn’t anything without her.
‘Okay what are the terms.’ The dark smile that spread across her face made shivers run down my spine. But I wouldn’t back down. I need her.
