Misty POV
I forced my eyes open after what felt like an eternity. Sunshine was streaming through the room and I felt so…content. The world didn’t feel so heavy. ‘I feel much better now. The rest was needed to heal us’ Esme commented. I hadn’t heard her sound so casual and calm since I arrived at the snow pack. ‘You took the brunt of the physical demand for us to make it back. It nearly killed you’ I felt a tear fall down my eye as I thought back to how close she was to collapsing. ‘It was the only way we would make it. You needed my strength in your fae form to make it back here. I fear what would have happened if we passed out anywhere but here’ She was right. If she didn’t help we both would’ve died or worse.
I heard the door unclick on my door and turned to see my father standing there waiting for me to say something. My voice suddenly felt thick and I realized I was crying, sobbing actually. Father came and hugged me until I stopped crying. He helped soothe my soul.
“You are the strongest daughter I could have asked for” he wiped a single tear from my eye. It didn’t feel like it. I felt so weak.
“Thank you father. How long was I asleep for?” I questioned
“A month or so. You needed a lot of slumber to heal your body. As well as Esme” he signaled for me to get out of bed and follow him. I noticed a lot of servants who didn’t pay me any mind before now gave me slight smiles and looks as I passed. We stepped into his office and his eyes dropped to hundreds of letters on his desk. I eyed them warily. I could guess who they were from.
“The letter that was addressed to me I responded to- the rest they aren’t mine. I didn’t know what you wanted me to do with-“
“Burn them. Get rid of them and pretend like they never came” my voice sounded cold even to me.
“Alright daughter, I will get rid of them.” He patted my head but I could see the sadness in his eyes that I had no interest in even trying to save my relationship with Amos. ‘Perhaps you would like some breakfast brought to you?’ He questioned.
“No I was responsible for fending for myself for the last year… I’d prefer to make my own meals now”
“As you wish. Use the kitchen to your hearts content.” His eyes dropped as he watched me leave.
I turned from the hall to the kitchen and held back my tears. I hated how much I cared that he cared. Enough to write me letters. I knew that if I opened them and they were filled with disdain and threats that my heart would shatter even further. So I chose the easiest way. Never dealing with them. The kitchen was bustling when I walked in. I forgot it was nearly lunch time for the nobles. I started making my own meal in the corner working around the other cooks. I was slightly startled when I felt one of them tap me on the shoulder
“Excuse me, princess. What are you making it smells heavenly’ she looked curious and harmless enough. I noticed other fairies were crowding around.
“Um they’re called pancakes in the human realm… I could teach you?‘ the only reason I knew how to make them was the ingredients were cheap and simple enough. I wasn’t given much in the realm. I had a cheap hot pot stove and they threw a recipe book at me with only enough ingredients to make a fraction of the recipes.
“They smell heavenly, princess. We would love if you would teach us”
*2 hours later*
“You’re a natural, Misty. I truly didn’t know you could cook so well” one of the cooks said as she patted her face clean.
“Yeah, Misty. I’m sure you’re one of the best cooks in the realm now. You must’ve learned a lot in your time away” another added. I couldn’t help but feel a pang in my chest as the truth couldn’t be more opposite.
“There’s a lot of good cooks in the human realm. I learned a lot” I lied. A small bitter smile visible on my face. Suddenly all the girls got a nervous look and one after another they flooded me with apologies. After urging them all down one spoke above the others.
“Misty we sincerely apologize for how we treated you before. We were ignorant of your race and didn’t know how to treat you so we just ignored you. That was very wrong. Please forgive us” all of them were practically in tears waiting for my response.
“I forgive you. Please treat me kindly from now on” I smiled at all them. None of them had shown me true malice and now they were trying at least.
I helped them clean up the kitchen and said goodbye to my new friends as I left. I never had friends… or anyone really besides Esme. ‘I never had anyone other than you either’ she states softly. My reason for agreeing to go to the human realm and visit the snow pack was to fine my mate. But more importantly it was so Esme could find wolf friends. I wanted her to fit in somewhere even if I didn’t. In the end it didn’t matter since both communities shunned us. ‘They’re trying with you now since you’re officially one of them even if you’re a hybrid. We were already full wolf when we went to the pack. They still rejected us.’ She whined. I couldn’t argue with her logic. It was the truth. ‘I’m sorry, Esme. I truly wish it would’ve worked out’ I whispered softly. ‘Maybe other packs are different… we could try another one’ she tried to reason. I just shook my head. She knew as well as I did if we went back to the human realm that we would be at risk of Amos trying to bring us back.
I was finally starting to fit in here and I didn’t want to have to go back to a place where neither Esme and I were appreciated. Who knows maybe I would find love somewhere here too. Esme snarled at that. I knew it was hopeless. Esme may have also hated Amos but she wanted desperately to be with her mate. Maybe he was different. I told her countless times that they were the same person and we couldn’t have one without the other. She relented and let me reject him since she knew neither of us could continue on with the life we had but she still held out hope for our mate. I didn’t hold the same standard.
I walked out back to the old garden swing I used to play on as a child. It squeaked as a i got a full swing in. Dad never did fix it but then again it’s what gave it nostalgia. I heard a noise from around the corner and my head snapped up. I let out a squeal and went running
“I missed you too, princess” Leo whispered as he caught me. He laughed heartedly and swung me around for a moment before placing me back on the ground.
“When did you get back, Leo?’ Leo has been my best friend for most of my childhood. He was a warriors child and was tasked with protecting me. However as we got older his parents trusted me less and less and restricted our time more and more. Eventually they sent him away right after my mom died. I never expected to see him again.
“I got back when you were sleeping. Your father let me stay here until you woke up. I was afraid my parents would disown me if they found out where I was. I see that now you have your wings people are treating you properly though?’
“Yes. It’s nice for a change. No one was ever truly my friend except for you.” I smiled bitterly
“We will have all the time in the world now. I’m done with my time in the fairy guard. My parents can’t control me anymore” I smiled at that. It meant we could spend more time together. ‘He’s not our mate. I will never accept him’ Esme reminded me. ‘He doesn’t have to be. He can just be a friend…someone to help us emotionally’ I said calmly. Truth be told I wanted more. I wished we would end up together as children. Esme hated him from the moment she learned of his existence. For reasons neither of us really know. ‘He just gives me an…odd feeling’ she replied.
“Good let’s catch up” I said smiling softly
