Chapter 3: Settling in

Coraline spent the next few hours immersed in the whirlwind that was Hartwell Enterprises. Her desk was a mountain of files, reports, and email, tasks begging for her attention, and every one of them with a deadline that seemed to be just around the corner. At first glance, everything about the company felt sterile. Immaculate offices. Polished marble floors. Gleaming glass walls. But beneath the surface, there was something else, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on yet. As the afternoon dragged on, Coraline’s mind raced, analyzing the information in front of her. She worked through each report with practiced precision, occasionally glancing at the clock. She wasn’t the type to waste time, and there was plenty of work ahead. Her phone buzzed, breaking her concentration. "Meeting with Mr. Hartwell in 15 minutes" Of course. She’d been expecting it. Jaxson had a habit of surprising people with impromptu meetings. He had a way of keeping everyone on their toes, even when he didn’t seem to care about what they were doing. Coraline took a deep breath, adjusting her blazer as she rose from her desk. There was no doubt in her mind that Jaxson would be as arrogant and cold as ever. But she wasn’t going to let that shake her. She was here to make her mark, and she’d do it on her own terms. Jaxson’s Office When she arrived at his office, the door was already open. She knocked softly anyway, just enough to announce her presence before stepping inside. Jaxson was seated at his desk, eyes scanning through paperwork with the same impassive focus he always had. He didn’t even glance up as she entered. “Ms. Hayes,” he said, voice clipped. “Sit.” Coraline resisted the urge to roll her eyes. He was so predictable. She took a seat across from him, crossing her legs and folding her arms casually. “You wanted to see me?” she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and confidence. Jaxson looked up at her then, his sharp eyes calculating as always. “I need you to look over these reports. I want your opinion on the acquisitions I’m considering.” She glanced at the papers in front of her, scanning through the data quickly. “These are all solid investments,” she said, her finger tracing the columns. “But there’s a gap in the market here. If you want to move fast, we need to position ourselves ahead of the competition, not just follow it.” Jaxson leaned back in his chair, the barest flicker of interest in his gaze. “You think we should take the risk?” Coraline didn’t hesitate. “You’ve built an empire on risk, Mr. Hartwell. If you want to stay on top, it’s time to start thinking bigger.” Jaxson’s lips curled into a small, knowing smile. “I like that,” he said, voice low. “You’re not afraid of the challenge. Good.” She met his gaze without flinching, not allowing the praise to affect her. “It’s not a challenge. It’s business.” “Of course,” he replied smoothly, his tone shifting back to his usual coldness. “But keep in mind my business. I don’t need anyone questioning my decisions.” Coraline raised an eyebrow, but kept her voice steady. “Then I wouldn’t have questioned you if I didn’t think you were overlooking something important.” For a brief moment, Jaxson said nothing, studying her as though trying to decide if she was worth the trouble. Finally, he spoke again, his voice casual but with an underlying challenge. “You’ll get to work on this immediately. And remember, you’re here to make things better, not cause distractions.” Coraline stood, ready to leave, but before she could step out the door, she turned back with a smirk. “Oh, don’t worry, Mr. Hartwell. I’ll make sure things run smoother than you ever imagined.” As she walked back to her office, Coraline felt the weight of the challenge ahead of her. Jaxson Hartwell was as insufferable as everyone said, but that wasn’t going to stop her. In fact, it only made her more determined to prove herself. She wasn’t here to just sit in the background. She was here to shape things, to make her mark in a world where power was everything and she was ready to take it. The minutes turned into hours, and Coraline worked tirelessly through the stacks of reports Jaxson had handed her. She methodically sifted through the numbers, analyzing trends, pinpointing opportunities, and making notes on potential risks. It wasn’t her first time in a high-pressure environment, but it was the first time she was working under a man like Jaxson Hartwell. Every decision he made felt like a gamble, every risk calculated with precision. The office had quieted down by the time the clock ticked toward 7:00 PM. Most of the staff had trickled out for the evening, leaving only the hum of the fluorescent lights and the occasional distant conversation. Coraline was still at her desk, reviewing the final set of reports when she felt a presence in the doorway. She didn’t have to look up to know who it was. His footsteps were familiar as his scent the clean, sharp fragrance of cologne mixed with the unmistakable arrogance that clung to him. "Ms. Hayes," Jaxson's voice called out, cool as ever. She glanced over her shoulder, not surprised to find him standing there, looking as imposing as ever. His sharp suit and perfectly combed hair gave him an air of effortless power. He didn’t look tired, not a hint of exhaustion in his posture. “Finished yet?” he asked, his tone lightly mocking. Coraline smiled to herself, shutting her laptop with deliberate slowness. “Almost,” she replied, her voice even. “I just wanted to double-check a few things. You know make sure everything's as perfect as you think it is.” Jaxson arched an eyebrow at her words. “I think everything is perfect?” “More or less," she said, leaning back in her chair. "But I’ve learned that nothing’s perfect until it’s been scrutinized from every angle. You should try it sometime.” He chuckled, the sound low and dangerous, and crossed the room to stand near her desk. For a moment, he simply watched her, his gaze sharp and calculating. Coraline could almost feel the weight of his scrutiny, but she didn't shrink under it. “Impressive,” Jaxson finally said, his tone softer, but still laced with his usual arrogance. “You’re not like most people I’ve worked with. They’d be on their way out by now, heading for the exits, but you” he gave a slow, deliberate glance around her cluttered desk, “you actually seem to care about the details. I’ll give you that.” Coraline didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she gathered her things and slid them into her bag, standing up from the desk. She wasn’t here to earn his praise. She was here to get things done—and maybe make him realize that his empire needed someone like her to keep it running smoothly. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Hartwell,” she said, her voice casual as she made her way to the door. Jaxson didn’t move to stop her, but his eyes followed her every step. “Don’t think you’re off the hook just yet, Ms. Hayes. There’s more work waiting for you. If you’re up for it.” Coraline paused at the door and looked back over her shoulder with a grin that could only be described as playful yet daring. “I’ve only just begun, Mr. Hartwell. Trust me, I’m just getting started.” With that, she stepped out, the door clicking softly behind her.
