Emily's eyes slowly opened, and she found herself lying on the floor, her head throbbing with pain. She sat up, rubbing her temples, trying to remember what had happened. As she looked around, she saw that the room was empty, but the door was still open. She slowly got up and walked to the door, peeking outside into the hallway. The hallway was dark and quiet, except for the sound of footsteps echoing in the distance. Emily's heart began to pound as she realized that the stranger was still in the manor. She quickly closed the door and locked it, her mind racing with questions. Who was the stranger? And what did they want with her? As she tried to calm herself down, Emily heard a faint scratching sound coming from the window. She walked over to it and saw a piece of paper stuck between the window frame and the glass. She carefully pulled out the paper and read the message scrawled on it: "I'm not going to hurt you. Meet me in the garden at midnight. Come alone." Emily's heart skipped a beat as she realized that the stranger was still trying to communicate with her. But why? And what did they want with her? As she looked out the window, Emily saw a figure lurking in the shadows. The stranger was still out there, watching her. And then, the lights in the room began to flicker, and Emily felt a chill run down her spine. She knew that she had to get out of there, but where could she go? The stranger seemed to be everywhere, watching her every move. Emily felt trapped, and she didn't know how to escape. As the lights continued to flicker, Emily heard a faint whispering in her ear. It was a soft, raspy voice, and it seemed to be coming from all around her. "Emily, you're in danger. You have to get out of here. Now." Emily's heart was racing as she looked around the room, trying to see who was speaking to her. But there was no one there. The whispering seemed to be coming from the walls themselves, and Emily felt a chill run down her spine. She knew that she had to get out of there, but where could she go? And then, the lights went out, plunging the room into darkness. Emily was trapped, and she didn't know how to escape. As Emily stood there in the darkness, she heard the sound of footsteps coming from the hallway. They were heavy, deliberate steps, and they seemed to be getting closer and closer. Emily's heart was racing as she tried to move, but her legs felt like lead. She was frozen in place, unable to move or speak. The footsteps stopped right outside her door, and Emily held her breath as she waited for whatever was on the other side to come in. But nothing happened. The footsteps just stopped, and there was silence. Emily let out a breath as she realized that she had been holding it. She took a step back, trying to calm herself down. As she stood there, she heard a faint creaking sound coming from the door. It was a soft, gentle sound, and it seemed to be getting louder. Suddenly, the door swung open, and Emily saw a figure standing in the doorway. It was the stranger, and he was holding a flashlight. "Emily," he said, his voice low and rough. "I've been looking for you." Emily tried to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. She was frozen in place unable to move or speak. The stranger took a step closer, his eyes fixed on Emily. "You're in danger," he said. "You have to come with me." Emily's mind was racing as she tried to process what was happening. Who was this stranger? And why was he trying to help her? As she stood there, the stranger reached out and grabbed her arm. He pulled her out of the room, and Emily stumbled after him. They ran down the hallway, the stranger's flashlight casting eerie shadows on the walls. Emily's heart was racing as she tried to keep up. As they reached the stairs, the stranger stopped and turned to Emily. "We have to get out of here," he said. "Now." Emily nodded, her mind racing with questions. But before she could ask any of them, the stranger grabbed her arm again and pulled her down the stairs. They ran through the foyer and out the front door, into the darkness of the night. Emily's heart was racing as she stumbled after the stranger. As they ran across the lawn, Emily saw a figure standing in the shadows. It was Aunt Rachel, and she looked frantic. "Emily!" she cried, running towards them. "What's going on?" But before Emily could answer, the stranger grabbed her arm again and pulled her away. "We have to get out of here," he said. "Now." And with that, they disappeared into the darkness, leaving Aunt Rachel standing alone in the night. As they ran through the darkness, Emily's mind was racing with questions. Who was this stranger? And why was he helping her? The stranger didn't seem to notice her confusion, and he kept pulling her through the darkness. They ran across the lawn, past the gardens, and into the woods. As they entered the woods, the darkness seemed to grow thicker, and Emily stumbled over roots and rocks. The stranger caught her, holding her upright as they continued to run. Finally, they reached a small clearing, and the stranger stopped, panting. Emily looked around, trying to get her bearings. They were deep in the woods, and she could see no sign of the manor or the gardens. The stranger looked at her, his eyes gleaming in the darkness. "We're safe for now," he said. "But we can't stay here for long." Emily nodded, still trying to process what was happening. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice shaking. The stranger smiled a small, enigmatic smile. "My name is Marcus," he said. "And I'm here to help you, Emily." Emily's eyes narrowed, trying to read Marcus's expression. But his face was a mask, and she couldn't tell what he was thinking. "Why are you helping me?" she asked, her voice firm. Marcus's smile grew wider, and he leaned in close. "Because, Emily," he whispered, "you're in grave danger. And I'm the only one who can help you." As Marcus spoke, Emily felt a chill run down her spine. What did he mean? And what kind of danger was she in? But before she could ask any more questions, Marcus grabbed her arm again, and they set off into the darkness, leaving Emily's questions unanswered. As they ran through the woods, Emily's heart was racing with fear and uncertainty. She didn't know what was happening, or who Marcus was. But she knew one thing - she had to trust him if she wanted to survive. And so, she followed Marcus, deeper into the woods, and further into the unknown. As they ran through the woods, Emily's senses were on high alert. She could hear the sound of twigs snapping and leaves rustling beneath their feet. The darkness seemed to press in around her, making her feel claustrophobic. Marcus seemed to sense her unease and tightened his grip on her arm. "Don't worry, Emily," he whispered. "I've got you." Emily nodded, trying to trust him. But her mind was racing with questions. Who was Marcus? What did he want from her? And why was he helping her? As they continued to run, the trees seemed to grow closer together, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. Emily stumbled, and Marcus caught her, holding her upright. "Sorry," Emily muttered, feeling a surge of embarrassment. Marcus smiled and helped her up. "It's okay," he said. "We're almost there." Emily looked around, trying to see where they were going. But the woods seemed to stretch on forever, with no sign of civilization in sight. Suddenly, Marcus stopped and pushed Emily behind him. "Wait," he whispered, his eyes scanning the darkness. Emily's heart skipped a beat as she realized that Marcus had sensed something. She strained her ears, trying to hear what he had heard. And then, she heard it too - the sound of footsteps, crunching through the underbrush. They were heavy, deliberate steps, and they seemed to be getting closer and closer. Marcus turned to Emily and grabbed her arm again. "Run," he whispered, pulling her through the woods. Emily didn't need to be told twice. She took off after Marcus, her heart pounding in her chest. The footsteps were getting closer and closer, and she knew that they had to get away. As they ran, the woods seemed to grow denser and more menacing. Emily stumbled, and Marcus caught her, holding her upright. And then, just as suddenly as they had started, the footsteps stopped. The woods were silent once again, except for the sound of Emily's ragged breathing. Marcus turned to Emily and looked at her intently. "We have to keep moving," he whispered. "We can't stay here." Emily nodded, still trying to catch her breath. She knew that they had to keep running, but she had no idea where they were going or what they were running from. As they continued to move through the woods, Emily's mind was racing with questions. Who was Marcus? What did he want from her? And what was happening in the woods? But one thing was certain - Emily was in grave danger, and she had to trust Marcus if she wanted to survive. As they emerged from the woods, Emily saw a faint light in the distance. It was a small cottage, nestled in a clearing. Marcus pulled her towards it, his eyes scanning the surrounding area. "We're safe here," he whispered. "For now." Emily's heart was still racing as she stumbled towards the cottage, unsure of what lay ahead. But as they reached the door, Marcus's expression changed, and he pushed Emily behind him. “Wait," he whispered, his eyes fixed on something inside the cottage. And then, Emily saw it too - a figure, slumped on the floor, a look of terror frozen on its face.
