Carren groaned and pulled the blanket over her head.
“Carren!” the voice called again, followed by another firm knock. “You’ll be late!”
“I’m awake!” she answered, though she was still lying comfortably beneath the covers.
For a few seconds, everything was quiet.
Then the door opened.
Her mother stood in the doorway, arms folded, giving her the familiar look that meant there would be no more excuses.
“Seven o’clock, and you're still in bed?”
Carren slowly sat up, her hair falling messily around her face. “I barely slept last night.”
Her mother sighed. “Neither did you have time to sleep. Now get dressed.”
Carren reached for her uniform and reluctantly climbed out of bed.
As she changed, however, something from the previous night kept returning to her thoughts.
Jordan Gray.
There was something strange about him.
She couldn't explain it, but ever since she had met Jordan, she had felt as though there was something hidden beneath his quiet expression. Something powerful. Something he didn't want anyone to discover.
She shook her head.
“I'm thinking too much,” she whispered.
Downstairs, her mother called again.
“Carren!”
“Coming!”
She grabbed her bag and hurried toward the door.
But just before she stepped out, her phone vibrated.
Carren looked down.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
DON'T TRUST JORDAN GRAY.
Her heart skipped.
She stared at the message for several seconds.
Then another message appeared.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS YET.
Carren's fingers tightened around the phone.
“What... does that mean?”
Outside, the morning sun continued to shine brightly.
But somewhere across town, Jordan Gray was waking up to a morning that would change everything.
