Lola
The day passed by rather quickly. It seemed busier than usual. I didn't mind. It kept me busy.
I was able to take a small break, so I went to the employee's room, walked to my cabinet, and grabbed my phone.
I don't know what I was hoping for, maybe a short one-word text, but nothing. Feeling a little ping of hurt, I pushed my phone back into my purse, shutting the door.
Walking to the vending machine, I get a bag of chips and a bottle of water, and I sit at the table. I just sat there, lost in my thoughts.
"Hey, girl, mind if I join ya?"
Looking up, I saw she was holding a drink and a small snack.
"Hey Ava, of course not have a seat,"
"God, it's so busy in here today. I swear everyone is in here," she says as she sits down and opens her drink.
"Yeah, I have to agree with you on that,"
I didn't smile; I just looked at my water bottle, fidgeting with the plastic label.
"Hey, you alright?" She asked, touching my hand.
Quickly masking myself, I looked at her, giving her a tight lip smile.
"Yeah, yeah, sorry just feeling a little tired,"
"Lola. I know that's not it, please you can talk to me,"
My shoulders slumped, letting out a sigh.
"I was just thinking of Dean,"
"You still haven't heard from him?"
Shaking my head. " No, not since this morning,"
"Lol, Im not trying to poke into your business, but if he's not making time for you,"
I hold my hand up to her.
"He's busy. Hes always been driven by his work, and I know he has a lot of cases. im just being dramatic. I'll see him tonight,"
"I'm sorry, Lola, I didn't mean to pry. I don't like seeing you down like this,"
"Thanks, Ava. I shouldn't let it be bothering me at work,"
"You can't help how you feel, Lola. I would feel the same if my husband did that,"
I just nodded at her and started munching on my chips. We sat there talking about the day and the different patients.
We hear the door open but don't look at who came in.
Someone sits next to us, making us look at them.
"Emma," Ava says a little dryly.
She rolls her eyes at Ava and then turns to me.
"So Lola, I hear that the Anderson Firm is putting on their yearly benefit fundraiser,"
"Yeah, what's your point? Everyone in town knows when it is," Ava snapped at her.
"I wasn't talking to you, Ava,"
"OK, look here, Emma. It's clear you have a thing for her husband, but I will not sit here and listen to you talk nonsense just to hurt her or make her feel bad; you should look elsewhere for a man and not at someone's husband!"
Ava gritted her teeth at her. I know Ava doesn't like Emma, and she never hid the fact. Normally, I just blow off what she says, but lately, it has bothered me. I mean, seriously, how can you have no dignity?
"Look, Emma, would you please stop asking about my husband,"
"I'm not asking anything about him! I'm asking about the fundraiser,"
I went to say something when Ava spoke up.
"Lola, it looks as if our break is up," Ava says as she stands up, grabbing her things.
"I'm coming," I say, standing, grabbing my drink, walking over, and throwing my empty bag away.
We walk out of the employee's room, letting the door close.
"She is so infuriating!" Ava says as we walk toward the nurse's desk.
I don't say anything. I've always known she has a thing for Dean, ever since she started here and learned who he was to me. It's every day we work together, and she always makes comments or asks things.
I pushed her to the back of my mind and continued with my day. Whenever I had to go up to the desk, I just ignored her.
Soon, my day was done. I got my things and walked to my car. I went in, heading home, hoping he would be there.
Cash
"Cash!" I hear my sister yelling.
Suddenly, my door swings open, and Ava comes storming in. She was pissed, and I didn't know what about it.
She smelled of humans and medicine, which meant she was coming from the hospital.
I had argued with her about her choice to work at the human hospital instead of here at the pack's clinic, but she felt she needed to learn about humans' healing ability and medication so she could better treat our kind. I don't see how it would help our kind; we healed way faster, and our immune systems were completely different from theirs.
"Cash, im gonna kill him!" She yells while flopping down in the chair in front of my desk. I raise an eyebrow at her.
"And who are you killing? And why?"
"Dean, that's who he's is a complete jerk,"
"Who is Dean?"
She sighs at my question.
"He's Lola's husband," Throwing her hands in the air like I should know this already.
"Lola?"
She huffs at me again.
"She a co-worker, Cash, and Dean is her husband,"
"Alright, So why are you all bent out of shape about him? Did he do something to you?"
"No!" She yelled at me again.
"Okay, Ava, I understand you are upset about something, but I have no idea what you're talking about unless you explain it to me,"
I see her take a breath and close her eyes. Sitting back in the chair, I see her body start to relax a bit.
She opens her eyes, and the fire has died down a bit.
"Lola is a nurse at the hospital. She is such a nice person; I like her, so I befriend he,r but there are days she is so down I can see it all over her face; I learned that she is married to Dean Carter,"
"Wait, Dean Carter, as in the big hotshot lawyer at Anderson Firm?"
"Yeah, you know him?"
"Ava, I run a security company. I know everyone,"
"Right. Well, as I was saying, I think something is going on,"
"Going on? What do you mean?"
"I think he's cheating on her,"
I sit back against my chair, letting out a groan.
"Cheating Ava, really, I thought there was something majorly wrong,"
"Wrong. Cash cheating is wrong. Lola is a sweet person. How can he do that to her!"
"Ava, you don't even know he is, so how can you accuse him of cheating? Have you ever met the guy? Maybe he's busy with work; you know he's a popular lawyer, and Anderson Firm is a big-time firm,"
She slaps her hands on her legs, sitting straight up.
"Cash, how can you say that? You know she told me this morning that he stayed last night at his office and then never talked to her all day!"
"Look, Ava, the man is a lawyer. He is probably just working. Don't you go poking your nose into places you shouldn't,"
I point my finger at her, giving her a stern look.
"Cash, I can't just sit by and do nothing. I can see the hurt on her face. Please, can't we do something ?"
"No, Ava, I'm not getting in the middle of this. It's a human affair. im not meddling in their business, and neither are you,"
"But Cash,"
"I said No, Ava!" I let my wolf come forward to show I meant it,
She hung her head. "Yes, Cash,"
She stood,d walking out of the office. I sat back, rubbing my temples.
Ava will make a great luna someday. She is always caring for anyone who wants to help them, but I can't let her do this; it's too risky, especially with a lawyer. But Ava only sees her friends needing help, and I love her for that. That is why she makes a great doctor as well.
