The Alpha's Regret: When He Cut Me Off for His Secretary

Chapter 2

Kane laughed.—not in mockery, but with the kind of pity that came from knowing I still didn't get it. He lowered his gaze slightly, looking down at me. "You actually think the Alpha Council will take your side?"

Whispers rippled through the crowd.

"A regular human wants to sue an Alpha? Did I hear that correctly?"

"The Alpha Council? She'd probably have to wait six months just to get an appointment."

Julie leaned against Kane's chest, her lips curling into a smug smile as she looked at me. "Nora, I've been to the Council before. They only deal with werewolves. I'm afraid you won't even get through the front doors."

The livestream comments flooded in at an even faster pace.

A: [The Council's elders are all territory Alphas. If I'm not mistaken, Kane's father is one of them too.]

B: [It's not completely impossible. Maybe if she cries outside the entrance for three days and three nights, the elders will come out because they can't stand the tears flooding the place.]

C: [Kane cheating is wrong, but an Alpha's destined mate was never supposed to be human anyway.]

Kane wrapped a strand of Julie's hair around his finger, making his support for her obvious. "Since she refuses to apologize, then you can punish her yourself."

Julie's face brightened with excitement. "My pleasure, Alpha."

She rushed over in a few steps and knocked the champagne tower down. The guests around us gasped softly.

I was standing too close. The champagne poured over me, and a sharp piece of glass sliced across my arm. A wave of pain shot through me.

"You really look like a stray dog drenched by the rain."

Julie pulled out a black card and waved it in front of my eyes.

"I broke all of this, but I have the money to pay for it. What about you? A low-blooded human like you actually dared to freeze my card?"

Facing my furious glare, Kane only shrugged. "If you can pay $8 million right now, you can leave whenever you want."

Mocking laughter came from his friends nearby.

"Forget it. Even if she sold everything she had, it wouldn't even be worth a million."

"The castle, the orchestra, the performances. Every single thing here cost a fortune. How could she possibly afford it?"

"She only got to enjoy this kind of life because she had the Alpha backing her. She really started believing she mattered."

Blood continued dripping from my arm. Someone in the crowd finally couldn't bear watching anymore and handed me a bandage.

Kane shot that person a displeased look. "This is between Nora and me. Anyone who wants to help her should consider whether they are strong enough to become my enemy."

Kane was a top-level Alpha. No one dared challenge him. The hands reaching toward me slowly withdrew.

I grabbed Kane's tie. "How dare you!"

He looked me over from head to toe, as if he were inspecting a piece of outdated fur. "Nora, did you forget? Everything you've got comes from me."

Slap!

The sound wasn't loud, but it echoed clearly through the entire hall.

The atmosphere instantly froze, as if someone had stopped time.

Julie covered her mouth in disbelief, and several people gasped.

The livestream viewers were completely stunned.

A: [She slapped an Alpha? Has she lost her mind?]

B: [Kane was slapped in front of everyone? I know she's finished, but why does this feel so satisfying?]

C: [Is she trying to start a war with the Gray Pack?]

Kane slowly turned his head. The corner of his lips twitched slightly, and a dangerous look spread across his face. "You hit me?"

Julie reacted first. She screamed and raised her hand before striking my face.

My head was forced to the side. A metallic taste filled my mouth, one side of my face swelled instantly, and my ears rang.

Even as an Omega, Julie's strength was far beyond mine. I forced myself to stay standing, refusing to let my knees touch the ground.

Kane stepped forward and grabbed my chin, making me look straight at him. "Do you know what you did wrong?"

I stared at him. The right side of my face had gone numb, but my eyes remained painfully clear.

He tightened his grip, pressing his fingertips into my jaw until the pain brought tears to the corners of my eyes. "You embarrassed me in front of the entire world, and you even attacked me. Do you really think you did nothing wrong?"

The people around us began trying to persuade me.

"Just apologize, Nora."

"No matter what happened, wasn't hitting an Alpha in public too much?"

"You've always depended on him to take care of you. Why are you still being stubborn?"

My chin felt like it was about to break, but I refused to say a word.

Kane thought I was nothing more than a helpless prey that would never fight back. He was wrong.

I spat out the blood in my mouth, reached into the hidden pocket of my gown, and pulled out a card.

It was black and metallic.

At the center of the card was a wolf head with its chin raised proudly. Two tiny emeralds were set into the eye sockets. When the light reflected off them, the sleeping beast looked as if it had briefly opened its eyes between dreams and reality.

I handed the card to the service provider. "Try this one."
