Chapter 4: The First Dance

For a brief moment, the ballroom seemed to disappear. Bill and Maya simply stared at each other. Neither had expected their paths to cross again so soon. Clara was the first to break the silence. "Bill," she repeated with a pleasant smile, "aren't you going to introduce me?" Bill cleared his throat. "Clara, this is Maya." Maya offered a polite smile. "It's nice to meet you." "You too," Clara replied, her eyes briefly scanning Maya's black serving uniform before returning to Bill. "How do you know each other?" "We met this morning," Bill answered. "There was a little... accident." Maya laughed softly. "Not exactly an accident." "I almost drove over her groceries." Clara chuckled politely. "Well, I'm glad no one was hurt." A voice echoed from across the ballroom. "Bill!" Gerald Thompson was beckoning his son with a single wave of his hand. Bill sighed inwardly. "I should go." Before leaving, he looked at Maya. "It was nice seeing you again." "You too." As Bill walked away with Clara, Maya found herself watching him until he disappeared into the crowd. Gladys suddenly appeared beside her, balancing a tray of desserts. "You're doing it again." Maya blinked. "Doing what?" "Watching him." "I wasn't." Gladys laughed. "Maya Carter, I've known you for years. You don't have to lie to me." "I'm working." "So is he?" Maya smiled despite herself. "Stop." "I will... after you admit he's handsome." Maya rolled her eyes. "I have tables to serve." She turned before Gladys could tease her any further. ⸻ At the center of the ballroom, Gerald introduced Bill to a circle of influential guests. "This is my son, Bill Thompson." The men shook Bill's hand one after another. "He's going to do great things." "He'll take your company even further." Gerald smiled proudly. "He has no choice." Bill forced a smile, though the words stung. Across the room, Monica noticed the brief change in her son's expression. She knew that look. It was the same one he'd worn since he was sixteen. The look of someone living another person's dream. ⸻ The orchestra began to play a slow, elegant melody. Anthony Lopez clapped his hands together. "I think it's time for the young people to dance." Several guests applauded. Clara turned toward Bill with hopeful eyes. "You promised we'd see." Bill hesitated. Gerald's gaze settled firmly on him. There was no refusing without creating a scene. Bill extended his hand. "May I?" Clara's smile brightened instantly. "I'd love to." They walked onto the dance floor. Around them, couples began moving gracefully beneath the glittering chandeliers. From the refreshment table, Maya watched without realizing she had stopped moving. "They look perfect together." The words slipped from her lips before she could stop them. Gladys heard them. "They look rich together," she corrected. "That's different." Maya lowered her eyes. "It doesn't matter." Gladys gently bumped her shoulder. "Exactly." ⸻ Halfway through the dance, Bill wasn't paying attention to the music. His eyes wandered through the ballroom. They found Maya. She was helping an elderly guest reach a chair, smiling as she spoke with him. The smile looked effortless. Real. Bill smiled unconsciously. Clara noticed. She followed his gaze. Her expression changed ever so slightly. "Who is she?" Bill looked back at Clara. "A girl I met this morning." "You've mentioned her twice already." "I have?" Clara nodded. "That's unusual." Before Bill could answer, the music ended. Guests applauded politely. ⸻ Near the service entrance, Maya carried an empty tray toward the kitchen. As she reached the hallway, voices drifted through a half-open office door. She wasn't trying to listen. But one name caught her attention. "Gerald Thompson." She slowed her steps. Inside, Gerald stood with Anthony Lopez. Anthony lowered his voice. "Are you sure everything from twenty years ago stayed buried?" Gerald's face hardened. "It has." "What if someone starts asking questions?" "They won't." "And if they do?" A long silence followed. Finally, Gerald spoke in a cold, unwavering tone. "I'll make sure they regret it." Maya frowned. She had no idea what they were talking about. The conversation sounded serious... Almost frightening. Before she could hear more, another server called from down the hallway. "Maya! We need more glasses!" She quickly hurried away. Neither Gerald nor Anthony realized that someone had been standing just outside the door. Someone who had unknowingly overheard the first whisper of a secret that had remained hidden for two decades. Far across the ballroom, Bill glanced toward the hallway. For reasons he couldn't explain... He suddenly hoped Maya's evening was going better than his. He had no idea that fate had already begun pulling both of them toward the same dangerous truth.
