Chapter 17: A Night to Remember

Bill opened the passenger door for Maya before walking around to the driver's seat. "Thank you," Maya said with a smile as she settled into the car. "My mom would be disappointed if I didn't." Maya fastened her seat belt. "Your mother sounds wonderful." Bill smiled as he started the engine. "She is." The car pulled away from the Carter residence, leaving the quiet neighborhood behind. For a few minutes, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was peaceful. "So..." Maya finally said. "So?" Bill replied with a grin. "You never told me where we're going." "That was intentional." "You planned a surprise?" "I hoped you'd let me." She laughed softly. "I think I can do that." ⸻ Twenty minutes later, Bill parked outside Harbor Lights, a small restaurant overlooking Lake Ashford. Unlike the extravagant places his family usually visited, Harbor Lights was cozy and welcoming. Warm lights reflected on the calm water, while soft piano music drifted through the open windows. Maya looked around in amazement. "It's beautiful." "I thought you'd like it." "You've been here before?" Bill shook his head. "I asked Steve to recommend somewhere quiet." She smiled. "He chose well." Inside, they were shown to a table beside the window. A candle flickered gently between them. After they ordered, Maya looked at Bill curiously. "You could have taken me anywhere." "I could have." "So why here?" Bill looked out at the lake before answering. "Because I wanted to hear your voice." She blinked. "What?" "If I'd taken you somewhere crowded..." "...everyone else would have competed for your attention." He smiled shyly. "I wanted tonight to be about us." Maya felt her heart skip. No expensive gift could have meant more than those simple words. ⸻ As dinner arrived, their conversation became effortless. They talked about childhood memories, embarrassing school moments, and the dreams they still carried. Bill laughed as Maya told him about accidentally setting off the fire alarm during a middle school science experiment. "It wasn't entirely my fault," she protested. "You mixed too many chemicals." "I was curious." "You nearly evacuated the school." "They forgave me." "Eventually." They laughed together until tears formed in Maya's eyes. For the first time in years, Bill laughed without worrying who was watching. ⸻ When dinner ended, they walked along the lakeside promenade. The night air was cool, and the lake shimmered beneath the moonlight. Bill slowed his pace. "My father doesn't approve of this." Maya looked at him. "Us?" He nodded. "He thinks people from different worlds don't belong together." She lowered her gaze. "My mother said something similar." Bill stopped walking. "Maya." She looked up. "I don't care how much money you have." "I don't care where you live." "I only care about how you make me feel." Her eyes searched his. "And how do I make you feel?" Bill smiled. "Like I'm finally living my own life." For a moment, neither of them moved. The sounds of the city faded into the distance. Only the gentle waves against the shore remained. Without thinking, Maya slipped her hand into his. Bill looked down in surprise. Then he gently intertwined his fingers with hers. Neither spoke. Words weren't necessary. ⸻ Across town... Gerald Thompson sat in his study with the investigation file spread across his desk. Richard Hayes stood nearby. "I've confirmed everything," Richard said quietly. "The Carter family has lived in Todu for nearly twenty years." Gerald stared at the faded newspaper clipping. "And before that?" "They moved here shortly after the accident." Gerald's jaw tightened. "What about Thomas Carter?" "He worked for a transport company years ago." Gerald closed the file. "Find out who he worked with." Richard nodded. "Immediately." As he turned to leave, Gerald spoke again. "Richard." "Yes, sir?" "I don't want Bill seeing Maya again." Richard hesitated. "Do you want me to speak with him?" Gerald's expression hardened. "No." "I'll handle my son." ⸻ Meanwhile, Clara sat alone in her bedroom. The conversation with Maya earlier that day replayed in her mind. She had expected Maya to be arrogant. Instead, she had met someone kind and sincere. That only made things harder. Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Anthony. Anthony: Your mother and I are having dinner with the Thompsons tomorrow. You'll be joining us. Clara stared at the screen. Tomorrow. She knew exactly what Gerald intended. He wanted Bill back within the world their families had created. She whispered to herself, "Will he even look at me the way he looks at her?" No answer came. ⸻ Bill drove Maya home just before ten. As they reached her gate, neither of them seemed eager for the evening to end. "I had a wonderful time," Maya said softly. "So did I." She reached for the door handle, then paused. "Bill?" "Yes?" "Thank you..." "...for treating me like I mattered." Bill looked at her with quiet sincerity. "You've mattered since the day oranges rolled across the road." A blush spread across Maya's cheeks. She smiled, stepped out of the car, and turned back before closing the door. "Good night." "Good night, Maya." She walked through the gate, glancing back once. Bill was still there, watching until she safely reached the front door. Only then did he drive away. Inside the house, Dorcas noticed the smile on her daughter's face. "So?" Maya hugged the bouquet of lilies Bill had given her. "It was the best evening I've had in a very long time." But miles away, Gerald Thompson stood by the window of his study. His eyes were fixed on the darkness beyond the glass. He had spent twenty years protecting a secret. And now, the one person who could unknowingly expose it... ...was slowly becoming the woman his son was falling in love with.
