Chapter 21: The Masquerade Invitation

828 Words
The rain had washed Todu clean by the next morning. The streets glistened under the early sunlight as people returned to their daily routines. Maya arrived at Collins Bakery with the masquerade invitation still tucked safely inside her handbag. Every now and then, she would take it out, read it, smile, and put it back. Gladys noticed immediately. "You're reading that invitation again." Maya laughed. "I've only looked at it twice." "Twelve times." "It wasn't twelve." Gladys raised an eyebrow. "I stopped counting after twelve." The two friends burst into laughter. Mr. Collins looked over from the kitchen. "If you're done gossiping, those croissants won't bake themselves." "Yes, boss!" they replied in unison. ⸻ At Thompson Group Headquarters, Bill was preparing for a board meeting when Steve walked into his office without knocking. "So..." Bill didn't even look up from his laptop. "So?" "I heard there's a masquerade ball this Saturday." "There is." "And I heard you invited someone." Bill finally looked up. "News travels fast." Steve dropped into a chair. "It wasn't exactly difficult to figure out." Bill smiled. "She said yes." Steve clapped his hands once. "Finally!" Bill laughed. "It's just one evening." Steve shook his head. "No, my friend." "It's your first real date where the whole city will see you together." That thought hadn't crossed Bill's mind. His smile slowly faded. "You think people will talk?" Steve shrugged. "They always do." "But the only question that matters is..." He leaned forward. "Do you care?" Bill answered without hesitation. "No." ⸻ Later that afternoon, Monica visited Gerald's office. She found him studying the same old file once again. "You've hardly come home this week." Gerald closed the folder. "Work has been demanding." Monica sighed. "Don't lie to me." Gerald remained silent. She walked closer. "This isn't about work." "It's about Maya Carter." His eyes lifted to meet hers. "You know?" "I know you've been investigating her." Monica's voice softened. "Gerald... what aren't you telling me?" For a long moment, he considered speaking. Then he quietly replied, "If I tell you..." "You'll never look at me the same way again." Before Monica could ask another question, he picked up his briefcase and walked out. She stared after him, more confused than ever. ⸻ That evening, Maya and Gladys wandered through a small boutique in downtown Todu. Rows of elegant dresses filled the shop. "I've never worn anything like these," Maya admitted. Gladys held up a shimmering emerald gown. "What about this one?" Maya laughed. "I'd trip over it before I reached the entrance." The shop assistant smiled warmly. "I think I have something perfect." A few minutes later, she returned carrying a simple midnight-blue gown. It wasn't covered in jewels. It wasn't extravagant. It was elegant. Maya stepped out of the fitting room wearing it. Gladys's mouth fell open. "Wow..." Maya looked at herself in the mirror. She barely recognized the woman staring back. "You really think it looks okay?" Gladys smiled. "Bill won't know what to say." Maya's cheeks turned pink. "I hope he likes it." ⸻ Across town, Clara sat alone on the balcony outside her bedroom. Vanessa joined her carrying two mugs of hot chocolate. "You've been quiet." Clara accepted the mug. "I found out Bill is taking Maya to the masquerade ball." Vanessa nodded. "I heard." Clara stared at the stars. "I keep asking myself what she has that I don't." Vanessa smiled gently. "Maybe she isn't trying to compete." Clara looked down. "That's the problem." ⸻ The following morning, Bill parked outside Collins Bakery before work. He carried a neatly wrapped gift box. Maya stepped outside as soon as she saw him. "I wasn't expecting you." "I know." He handed her the box. "What's this?" "Open it later." She looked at him curiously. "You enjoy keeping secrets." "Only the good ones." She smiled. "I'll see you after work?" "I wouldn't miss it." Bill started walking back to his car. "Bill?" He turned. "Thank you." "For what?" She held the gift close to her chest. "For making me feel special." Bill smiled. "You don't need me to do that." "You've always been special." He drove away before she could answer. Maya stood on the sidewalk, smiling to herself. When she finally opened the gift during her lunch break, she found a delicate silver bracelet. Attached was another handwritten note. For the woman who reminds me that the simplest moments are the most beautiful. —Bill Maya gently fastened the bracelet around her wrist. It fit perfectly. Unbeknownst to her, someone across the street had witnessed the entire exchange. Gerald Thompson lowered the window of his sedan just enough to see the bracelet sparkle in the sunlight. His expression darkened. His son wasn't simply interested in Maya anymore. He was falling in love. And Gerald knew that if he didn't act soon, the truth buried for twenty years would rise to the surface—bringing consequences that neither family was prepared to face.
