Chapter 22: Beneath the Masks

928 Words
Saturday arrived at last. The city of Todu buzzed with excitement. The annual Charity Masquerade Ball was one of the most anticipated events of the year. Business leaders, celebrities, politicians, and philanthropists would all gather under one roof to raise money for children's hospitals and community projects. For Bill... It wasn't about the event. It was about Maya. ⸻ Maya stood in front of the mirror, taking a deep breath. The midnight-blue gown fit perfectly, flowing elegantly to the floor. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and the silver bracelet Bill had given her shimmered beneath the bedroom light. Dorcas stepped into the room. For a moment, she simply stared. "My little girl..." Maya smiled nervously. "Do I look okay?" Dorcas walked over and gently brushed a strand of hair behind Maya's ear. "You look beautiful." She hugged her daughter tightly. "Just remember who you are." "I will." Thomas appeared at the doorway. He smiled proudly. "If Bill doesn't tell you how stunning you look..." "I'll have to remind him myself." Maya laughed. "I think he'll notice." ⸻ At exactly seven o'clock, a sleek black sedan stopped outside the Carter home. Bill stepped out wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. A silver mask covered the upper half of his face. He carried a bouquet of white roses. Thomas opened the front door. "Good evening, Bill." "Good evening, sir." "You look very handsome." "Thank you." Just then... Maya walked down the staircase. The room fell silent. Bill forgot to breathe. The blue gown caught the light with every step. Her silver mask highlighted her bright eyes, while the bracelet on her wrist sparkled softly. She stopped in front of him. "So..." She smiled. "How do I look?" Bill laughed quietly. "I spent the whole drive here thinking I'd say something impressive." "And?" "I forgot every word." Maya blushed. "I'll take that as a compliment." He handed her the bouquet. "These are for you." "They're beautiful." "They're not as beautiful as the person holding them." Thomas cleared his throat dramatically. "I'm still standing here." Everyone laughed. ⸻ The Grand Aurora Hotel was transformed into a breathtaking ballroom. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead. An orchestra played gentle classical music. Hundreds of guests in elegant gowns and suits filled the dance floor, their masks adding an air of mystery. As Bill and Maya entered together, conversations around the room softened. People noticed them. Some smiled. Others whispered. Maya leaned closer. "I think everyone's looking at us." Bill offered his arm. "Then let's give them something worth looking at." She slipped her arm through his. Together, they walked farther into the ballroom. ⸻ Across the room... Clara Lopez watched them arrive. Her heart sank. Vanessa stood beside her. "They look happy." Clara nodded slowly. "They do." Anthony approached his daughter. "Would you like to dance?" She forced a smile. "In a little while." Her eyes never left Bill. ⸻ Meanwhile, Gerald Thompson stood near one of the ballroom windows, speaking with several investors. His conversation stopped the moment he saw Bill and Maya together. Richard Hayes quietly joined him. "They came together." "I can see that." Gerald's voice remained calm. But his grip tightened around the glass in his hand. "This has gone far enough." ⸻ The orchestra began a slow waltz. Bill turned toward Maya. "May I have this dance?" She smiled warmly. "I was wondering when you'd ask." He led her onto the dance floor. Neither of them noticed the dozens of eyes following them. As the music filled the ballroom, Bill gently placed one hand around Maya's waist while she rested hers on his shoulder. They moved gracefully across the polished floor. "I should warn you," Bill said with a grin. "I'm not the best dancer." Maya laughed. "Good." "Why?" "Neither am I." Within moments, they were laughing so much that they nearly missed a step. Nearby guests smiled at the genuine joy between them. Steve, watching from another table, nudged Gladys. "I've never seen him this happy." Gladys smiled. "And I've never seen Maya trust someone this quickly." ⸻ Halfway through the dance, the music softened. Bill looked into Maya's eyes. "Can I tell you something?" "You can tell me anything." "I used to hate coming to events like this." "And now?" He smiled. "Now I wish the night would never end." Maya felt her heart race. She had never imagined that someone from Bill's world could make her feel so comfortable. "So do I," she whispered. For a brief moment... Nothing else existed. Not the crowd. Not the music. Not the whispers. Only the two of them. ⸻ Suddenly, the ballroom lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then... The music stopped. The room fell into uneasy silence. Guests exchanged confused glances. A hotel manager hurried onto the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the interruption." "It appears we've experienced a temporary power issue." Soft murmurs spread across the ballroom. Gerald frowned. Something didn't feel right. Then, from somewhere near the entrance... A loud crash echoed through the hall. Everyone turned toward the sound. A waiter had dropped a tray. But Bill's attention shifted elsewhere. He noticed a masked man standing near one of the emergency exits. The stranger wasn't watching the commotion. He was watching... Gerald Thompson. The man quickly disappeared through the exit before anyone else seemed to notice. Bill frowned. "Did you see that?" he asked quietly. Maya followed his gaze. "See what?" But the man was already gone. For reasons he couldn't explain... Bill suddenly felt that the perfect evening had just taken a dangerous turn.
