A restless silence lingered over the Grand Aurora Hotel.
The orchestra remained still.
Guests whispered among themselves as hotel staff rushed to investigate the sudden power interruption.
Within a few minutes, the lights returned.
The chandeliers sparkled once more, and polite applause rippled through the ballroom.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the host announced with a smile, "thank you for your patience. Please enjoy the rest of your evening."
The music began again.
But Bill couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in his chest.
⸻
"You still look worried," Maya said as they stepped away from the dance floor.
"I'm fine."
She smiled knowingly.
"No, you're pretending to be fine."
Bill let out a quiet sigh.
"I saw someone."
"The man near the exit?"
"You noticed him?"
"Only after you looked over."
Bill glanced toward the emergency doors again.
"They weren't looking at the crowd."
"They were watching my father."
Maya frowned.
"Do you think he knows him?"
"I don't know."
"And that's what bothers me."
Before Maya could reply, Steve appeared beside them with two glasses of fruit punch.
"I've been looking everywhere for you two."
He handed them each a glass.
"Did I interrupt something?"
Bill smiled faintly.
"Just my imagination."
Steve laughed.
"Then your imagination picked the wrong night."

Across the ballroom, Gerald stood speaking with Anthony Lopez.
Anthony noticed Gerald's distracted expression.
"You've barely listened to a word I've said."
Gerald forced a smile.
"My apologies."
Anthony lowered his voice.
"Is this about Bill?"
Gerald looked toward the dance floor.
"It's about mistakes."
Anthony frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The kind that come back when you think they're long forgotten."
Anthony stared at his old friend.
For a brief moment...
He thought about asking another question.
Instead, he remained silent.

Meanwhile, Clara stood alone on the balcony overlooking the hotel gardens.
The cool night air brushed against her face.
She removed her silver mask and closed her eyes.
"I thought I'd find you here."
She turned.
It was Monica Thompson.
"Mrs. Thompson."
Monica smiled warmly.
"You don't have to call me that."
"I've known you since you were little."
Clara smiled politely.
"I suppose old habits are hard to break."
Monica joined her at the railing.
"You've been watching Bill all evening."
Clara looked away.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Only to someone who's been where you are."
Clara looked at her in surprise.
"You have?"
Monica nodded slowly.
"When I was young..."
"I loved someone who didn't love me back."
Clara listened quietly.
"It hurt."
"But forcing someone to stay would have hurt even more."
A tear rolled down Clara's cheek.
"I don't know how to let go."
Monica gently squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to let go tonight."
"But one day..."
"You'll deserve someone who chooses you first."
Clara lowered her head.
For the first time...
She allowed herself to cry.

Back inside, Bill and Maya wandered into the hotel's beautifully lit garden.
The noise of the ballroom faded behind them.
Tiny lights hung from the trees, reflecting on a small fountain in the center of the garden.
"It's peaceful here," Maya whispered.
Bill nodded.
"I needed some quiet."
They sat together on a wooden bench.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Maya broke the silence.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Have you ever regretted meeting me?"
Bill turned to face her.
"Not for a single second."
She looked down.
"Even with everything your father is putting you through?"
Bill smiled gently.
"If meeting you is the reason we're arguing..."
"Then you're worth every argument."
Maya laughed softly.
"You really know how to say the right thing."
"I usually don't."
"But around you..."
"The words just come."
Their eyes met beneath the glow of the garden lights.
Bill slowly reached for her hand.
She didn't pull away.
Instead, she intertwined her fingers with his.
"Maya..."
"Yes?"
"I don't know where this road leads."
She smiled.
"Neither do I."
"But..."
She squeezed his hand gently.
"I'd like to keep walking it with you."
A smile spread across Bill's face.
"So would I."
⸻
Hidden behind a hedge a few metres away, someone quietly lowered a camera.
Click.
The photograph captured Bill and Maya holding hands beneath the lights.
The mysterious photographer slipped the camera into a black bag and disappeared into the shadows.
⸻
Inside the ballroom, Gerald's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
"Yes?"
A calm voice spoke from the other end.
"I found him."
Gerald's expression froze.
"Are you certain?"
"I saw him leave the hotel."
"The scar on his left hand matches the police report."
Gerald closed his eyes.
"So he's alive..."
Anthony noticed Gerald's face lose its colour.
"Gerald?"
But Gerald barely heard him.
The past he had buried for twenty years was no longer a memory.
It had returned.
And it had come looking for him.
⸻
Unaware of the storm gathering around them, Bill walked Maya back into the ballroom.
The orchestra began playing one final song.
"One last dance?" Bill asked.
Maya smiled.
"I was hoping you'd ask."
As they stepped onto the dance floor once more, neither of them realized that someone, somewhere in the hotel, was already developing the photograph of them together.
A single picture...
Capable of changing both families forever.
