Chapter 10: Coffee Between Two Worlds

956 Words
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted through Collins Bakery as the morning sun poured through the windows. It was one of those rare mornings when the bakery wasn't crowded. Maya stood behind the counter, arranging a tray of butter croissants while humming softly to herself. Gladys noticed. "You've been smiling all morning." Maya looked up. "Have I?" "You have." "I guess I'm just in a good mood." Gladys smirked. "It couldn't possibly have anything to do with a certain rich guy." Maya rolled her eyes. "Bill isn't—" She stopped herself. Gladys laughed. "You were about to defend him before I even finished." "I was not." "You were." Before Maya could argue further, the bell above the door chimed. Both women turned. Bill walked into the bakery, dressed casually in a navy-blue sweater and dark jeans instead of the expensive suits Maya had grown used to seeing. For the first time, he looked less like the heir to a business empire... ...and more like an ordinary young man. His eyes immediately found Maya. "Good morning." A warm smile spread across her face. "Morning." Gladys quietly leaned closer to Maya. "I'll be in the kitchen." "You don't have to—" "Oh, I definitely do." With a mischievous grin, she disappeared through the swinging door. Bill chuckled. "Does she always do that?" "Only when she's trying to embarrass me." "I like her already." "I'm not surprised." They both laughed. Bill stepped closer to the counter. "I came for breakfast." Maya folded her arms. "Did you?" "I did." "What would you like?" He pretended to study the menu. "Hmm..." After a long pause, he smiled. "Your recommendation." "My recommendation?" "You work here." "That's true." "So I trust your judgment." Maya smiled. "In that case..." She picked out a warm croissant and poured him a fresh cup of coffee. "This is my favorite." "I'll take it." As she handed him the tray, Bill reached into his wallet. She shook her head. "It's on the house." "I can't let you do that." "Why not?" "Because your boss might think I'm taking advantage." Just then Mr. Collins appeared from the kitchen. "If she's offering free coffee, I'm the one paying for it." Everyone laughed. Mr. Collins looked between the two young people. "I've never seen anyone enjoy breakfast this much." Bill smiled politely. "Your bakery makes it easy." Mr. Collins winked at Maya before returning to the kitchen. She sighed. "Now he's teasing me too." "You've become very popular." "Apparently." Bill carried his tray to a table near the window. After a moment's hesitation, Maya walked over with her own cup of tea. "Mind if I sit?" "I was hoping you would." She smiled and took the seat opposite him. For a while, they simply enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. Outside, people hurried along the sidewalks. Inside, time seemed to slow down. "So," Maya said, stirring her tea, "what do you actually enjoy doing?" Bill looked surprised. "No one's asked me that in a long time." "Really?" "They usually ask what my father does... or what our company does." "I'm asking about you." Bill smiled. "I like photography." Maya blinked. "I wasn't expecting that." "Neither was my father." She laughed. "Have you always liked it?" "Since I was fifteen." "What do you take pictures of?" "The ordinary things people don't notice." She tilted her head. "Like what?" He looked out the window. "An old couple holding hands." "A child chasing pigeons." "The way sunlight hits the lake in the evening." Maya smiled softly. "That sounds beautiful." "What about you?" She looked down at her tea. "I like helping people." "I know you want to become a nurse." "I do." "My grandmother was sick when I was little." Her voice became quieter. "The nurses treated her with so much kindness." She smiled sadly. "I remember thinking..." "If I can make even one person feel that safe someday..." "...then my life will mean something." Bill didn't speak immediately. He simply admired the sincerity in her words. "You already make people feel that way." Maya looked up. "What do you mean?" "You made a complete stranger feel comfortable enough to forget his problems." Their eyes met. Neither of them looked away. For a brief moment, the rest of the world faded into the background. The sound of the bakery door opening broke the silence. Steve Brown stepped inside. He stopped the instant he saw Bill and Maya sitting together. A slow smile spread across his face. "So..." Bill sighed. "I know that look." Steve walked over. "You must be Maya." She stood politely. "And you are?" "Steve Brown." He shook her hand. "Bill's best friend." "It's nice to meet you." "You too." Steve glanced at Bill. "I've been calling you for twenty minutes." Bill reached into his pocket. His phone was switched off. "I didn't even realize." Steve laughed. "I can see why." Bill gave him a warning look. Steve raised both hands. "I'll behave." Maya smiled. "I'm guessing he doesn't." "Rarely," Bill answered. The three of them laughed together. From the counter, Gladys peeked through the kitchen door. She nudged Mr. Collins. "Look." Mr. Collins smiled knowingly. "They make a lovely pair." "Don't say that too loudly." "Why not?" "Because neither of them knows it yet." Outside the bakery, a black luxury car slowed as it passed. Inside sat Clara Lopez. She had come hoping to surprise Bill with lunch. Instead, she watched him laughing with Maya through the bakery window. The smile slowly disappeared from her face. Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel. For the first time... She no longer saw Maya Carter as just another girl. She saw her as a rival. And Clara Lopez had never liked losing.
