Chapter 6: Warnings from the Heart

800 Words
The moon hung low over Todu as Maya stepped through the front gate of her family's modest home. The small white house sat quietly at the end of Maple Street, surrounded by flowering shrubs that her mother cared for every weekend. Warm light spilled through the kitchen window, and the familiar smell of vegetable soup drifted into the cool evening air. Home. No matter how long her day had been, home always had a way of making her breathe easier. Before she reached the front door, it swung open. "There you are!" Dorcas Carter exclaimed, placing a hand over her chest. "Do you know what time it is?" Maya smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, Mom. The gala lasted longer than we expected." Dorcas stepped aside. "Come in before the soup gets cold." Inside, Thomas Carter looked up from the dining table with a tired but welcoming smile. His work boots rested beside his chair, evidence of another long day at the construction site. "Evening, Princess." "Hi, Dad." He stood and wrapped her in a quick hug. "You look exhausted." "I feel exhausted." Thomas laughed. "That's what honest work does." The three of them settled around the small wooden table. For a few moments, only the clinking of spoons filled the room. Then Thomas asked, "So, how was this fancy charity gala?" Maya thought for a second. "It was... beautiful." Dorcas smiled. "I've never been inside one." "It was like something from a movie. Crystal chandeliers, live music, people dressed in expensive gowns..." "And rich people pretending to enjoy each other's company," Thomas added with a grin. Maya laughed. "Some of them actually seemed nice." Dorcas raised an eyebrow. "Some?" Maya hesitated. She hadn't planned on mentioning Bill. But for some reason, his face flashed through her mind. "There was someone I met." Thomas exchanged a quick glance with Dorcas. "A young man?" he asked casually. Maya nodded. "We met by accident yesterday morning... then we ran into each other again tonight." Dorcas set her spoon down. "What does he do?" "I'm not really sure." "What was his name?" Maya reached into her bag and pulled out the business card Bill had given her. "Bill Thompson." The room fell silent. Thomas's smile slowly faded. Dorcas stared at the card without touching it. "You know that name?" Maya asked. Thomas leaned back in his chair. "Everyone in Todu knows the Thompson family." "They own half the businesses in town," Dorcas added quietly. Maya blinked. "I didn't know." "He didn't tell you?" "No." Thomas sighed. "Maybe he didn't think it mattered." Dorcas finally picked up the card and handed it back. "Maya..." Her voice was gentle, but serious. "There's nothing wrong with making friends." "But sometimes people from different worlds don't understand the problems they bring into each other's lives." Maya frowned. "You don't even know him." "No," Dorcas admitted. "But I know families like his." Thomas reached across the table and squeezed Maya's hand. "We trust your judgment." "We do," Dorcas agreed. "We just don't want to see you get hurt." Maya looked down at the business card. Bill hadn't acted like someone who thought he was better than everyone else. In fact... He had seemed lonely. "I think he's different." Dorcas smiled sadly. "I hope you're right." ⸻ Across town... The Thompson mansion was unusually quiet. Bill loosened his tie as he entered the living room. Gerald was waiting. "I've been expecting you." Bill stopped walking. "I figured." Gerald folded the newspaper on his lap. "You embarrassed Clara tonight." "I danced with her." "You spent more time talking to a waitress than to the guests who matter." Bill's jaw tightened. "Her name is Maya." "I don't care what her name is." The words echoed through the room. Monica, who had been standing near the staircase, looked toward her husband with disappointment. Gerald continued. "You are a Thompson." "Act like one." Bill met his father's gaze without flinching. "Maybe being a Thompson isn't everything." The room fell deathly silent. Gerald rose to his feet. His voice was calm. Too calm. "I won't warn you twice." Bill didn't answer. He simply walked upstairs. Behind him, Monica remained frozen. She had never seen her son challenge his father so openly. Nor had she ever seen Gerald look so determined. ⸻ Elsewhere in Todu... Clara Lopez stood on the balcony of her bedroom, staring into the night. She replayed the image she'd seen at the gala. The way Bill had smiled at Maya. It wasn't a polite smile. It wasn't forced. It was effortless. Real. Something Clara had been trying to earn for years. She slowly closed the curtains. Then reached for her phone. "There has to be something special about you, Maya Carter," she whispered. "And I'm going to find out exactly what it is."
