Chapter 18: Lowly Andrew

1083 Words
After hearing the words of Ms. Julia and Sophie, the guests, who had been tense and nervous moments before, noticeably began to relax. It was intriguing how the affluent offspring had been pampered and privileged since youth. The idea of one of them willingly becoming a live-in son-in-law for three years seemed almost unbelievable. The decision to retain Andrew as the general agent seemed unrelated to Ethan in everyone's eyes. Perhaps it was mere chance that Ethan happened to be the one making the call, adopting an authoritative tone. Or maybe Ethan had been privy to the news prior to the call. Nevertheless, Andrew's professional future hung in the balance, an undeniable reality etched in stone. A subtle wink from Ms. Julia to Klein conveyed a silent message, prompting him to swiftly grasp the red roses gifted by Andrew and make his way over. "Andrew, take back these red roses. My sister's preferences have shifted, and the scent of red roses no longer appeals to her," Klein remarked coolly. Upon learning of Andrew's dismissal as the general agent, Klein altered his approach towards Andrew. Previously referring to him as 'Mr. McDonald,' Klein now addressed him by his first name, a stark shift in tone. Returning Andrew's gift further emphasized Klein's desire to sever ties with him. It was evident that Klein wanted to distance himself from Andrew. In a desperate plea, Andrew urged, "Mr. Reynolds, please keep the red roses for yourself. If your sister does not wish to have them, you could always gift them to your wife instead." Klein insisted on returning the red roses to Andrew and said, "We understand your goodwill, but my wife doesn't like red roses either." "Miss. Walport, Mr. West. It took me a lot of effort to buy this bouquet of rare red roses. I'm going to open it now. Let's appreciate its beauty!" Andrew didn't even call Walter and unwrapped the bouquet of red roses himself. However, no one was willing to accept the bouquet of expensive red roses after it was presented. "Miss. Walport, let me present this to you. Please enjoy its fragrance," Andrew said as he walked towards Clara. Clara politely refused, "I'm sorry, I drove here. I can't take the roses with me." 'You can't take the roses?' Andrew clearly remembered that just a moment ago, Clara had accepted the red roses graciously! Andrew approached Tony, who similarly declined. "I only prefer white roses," he said. The other people at the table took the opportunity to raise their glasses and head over to Ms. Julia's table to toast to her and wish her a happy birthday. Clara was the only one remaining at the table that was lively just moments ago. "A lone soul in a practical society," Ethan remarked, shaking his head as he observed Andrew's unfortunate situation. The Reynolds and the high society members in this circle were all too focused on practical matters. It was no surprise that Maya would betray her husband for the sake of wealth. Seeing that Clara was the only one still present at the table, Andrew believed that Clara was still willing to be his friend. Approaching Clara, Andrew asked, "Miss. Walport, could we exchange contact information? I would like to invite you and Mr. Hewitt for a meal if the opportunity arises." Clara took a sip of her tea and replied, "I'm sorry, I don't have my phone with me." "Oh, I see. That's alright," Andrew responded with a hint of disappointment. Andrew looked highly embarrassed. As a man, the most miserable and agonizing thing was not being physically defeated, but being despised and looked down upon by others. Ethan had already delivered a punishment that Andrew rightfully deserved. Andrew stood alone, holding the bouquet of red roses, while the others laughed and chatted happily amongst themselves. Witnessing Andrew's distress, Ethan took pity on him and decided to offer him a chance at redemption. "Andrew!" Ethan called out suddenly, producing an empty wine glass. "If you offer me a sincere apology now, I will take the roses from you. After that, I will contact Jackson Hewitt to discuss renewing the contract for another year." Ethan didn't explicitly state it, but by accepting and taking the roses Andrew offer, it would signify his forgiveness towards Andrew. Since none of the people Andrew had previously offer the red for were willing to take it, Ethan's gesture was indeed a favor to Andrew. Andrew felt that Ethan was taking advantage of him. "This banquet of Roses costs more than a few hundred thousand. If you truly wish for it, just say so. Why are you behaving like a high and mighty boss?" Andrew retorted. "Expecting me to apologize to you, a worthless son-in-law? Wouldn't that just further degrade me in front of everyone present? How could I possibly continue to be a part of this social circle then!?" he exclaimed in frustration. Ethan shook his head and remarked, "Indeed, a pitiful person must possess detestable flaws. In this case, I'll let you handle your own affairs." Previously, Ethan had shown some sympathy towards Andrew, possibly due to the upbringing influenced by their family's Ancestral system that emphasized kindness. However, now that Andrew failed to appreciate the opportunity given to him by Ethan, the latter no longer felt any compassion towards Andrew. After Andrew hastily left the banquet, Ethan watched his departure with a contemplative expression. "I wonder if I'll encounter that guy again in the future. He'll probably be filled with regret when he realizes I'm the CEO of Walt Disney," Ethan thought to himself as he scooped some soup with a spoon. Unexpectedly, Sophie, who was seated opposite him, also reached for the soup, causing their spoons to touch with a clang. "Oh, how vexing! My spoon touched the spoon of that worthless person. Now my spoon is contaminated..." Sophie exclaimed in disgust, her voice filled with sorrow. Alexander quickly came to his sister's defense, saying, "Ethan, out of all the dishes, you just had to compete with my sister. Is this what you intended?" The awkward and tense atmosphere lingered at the table as the inadvertent spoon incident caused a stir among the guests. Ethan, lost in his thoughts, hadn't paid much attention to what he was about to eat. When he finally focused on his dish, he noticed it was papaya soup with red dates and lotus seeds. Glancing at Sophie's curvaceous figure, Ethan suddenly felt awkward and a bit flustered.
