Chapter Sixteen

631 Words
It's been two weeks into summer. Two blissful weeks of Matt and I secretly having our rendezvous in various places around town. We've been to the park a lot and to The Gattaca movie theatre. We've even been to Molly's cafe, where they serve the best apple crumble and custard. Every secret kiss and secret touch has been magical and almost surreal. We haven't gotten to the relationship part yet, but I feel like Matt will bring that up when and if he wants to. I don't want to feel too clingy either, but school is coming up after our last week of summer and I'm scared about how everything will change. I'm scared that once Matt and I go back, everything will end. He'll go back to being my brothers best friend and quarterback and I'll be no one to him. "Are you even listening to me?" Matt asks. We're sitting at the park since it's one of the few places that we can be alone these days. When Matt is at our house, I stay away from him, because I don't want a repeat of Daniel saying something that's going to upset me. I was feeling fragile then, I don't know how I'd feel now. Possibly worse. "I am," I lie. I honestly got lost in the conversation the moment we started on the football subject. I just couldn't keep up with the tactics and players. He raises both eyebrows. "What were we talking about?" "Football?" I guess. "I was right!" he exclaims childishly. "What are you thinking about?" "You," I say with full honesty. "Since you are thinking about me, " Matt says. "I'll give you a free pass." I smile at him and hand him the extra bit of my chocolate frozen yoghurt. My mouth is absolutely cold. "What are you thinking about me though?" he asks, with his trademark, devilish smile. "Everything, I guess." In the sun, Matt's eyes appear grey even though they're gunmetal blue. But now they're extremely light and beautiful and I could stare into them forever, but I'd probably freak Matt out. Matt eats a spoonful of the frozen yoghurt and stares at me for a few moments. "Is it good or bad thoughts?" I shrug. "Both, I guess." "Like bad as in s****l bad or something else?" Matt asks. I place my hands into my face and say in a muffled voice, "Something else." Matt places his hands on my shoulders. "Just tell me what's bothering you." I look at him. "No. I'm having a good day. Just ignore me. Let's just have a nice day." Matt nods and stands up. "Can you tell a little white lie?" I hold my hands out to him and he helps me up with ease. "Depends on what it is." "Remember when I asked you to keep the keys to the farmhouse?" he asks. "I do. I still have it." Matt smiles. "Yeah. Can you tell your parents that you'd be away for the night? And possibly half the day tomorrow. Tell them that you'll be at a friend's house." "Wait are you planning on k********g me and then killing me like in one of those slasher movies?" I ask. Matt stares at me for a few seconds. "How'd you ever guess that I was planning on doing exactly that?" I shrug. "You have those tendencies. I knew through intuition." Matts laughs. "Ok now use your intuition. Will your parents buy the lie?" "Yeah. But what are we doing?" I ask. "We're gonna have some fun. I want to have an amazing weekend before going back to school, " he says. "But if you have other plans, then it's totally cool with me." "I don't," I say a little too quickly and eagerly. Matt grins. "Perfect. What time should I pick you up?" "Five-thirty-ish." Matt slips his arm around my waist. "Okay. I'll be there. And please don't bring your uggs along." I roll my eyes. "You still need to grow up."
