Chapter 17
Elena sat perfectly still in the medical chair, letting Vance believe she was still weakened while her enhanced abilities coiled beneath the surface like a sleeping serpent. The laboratory around her was a testament to his obsession—walls lined with genetic sequencing equipment, monitors displaying DNA helixes, and specimen containers filled with things she didn't want to identify.
"You know," Vance said conversationally as he prepared a syringe, "your father would be so proud to see what you've become. His little girl, the perfect fusion of human and enhanced genetics."
"My father would kill you for what you're doing," Elena said quietly.
"Your father tried to kill me. Why do you think his heart attack was so... convenient?" Vance's smile was reptilian. "David always was too sentimental about his research subjects."
Elena felt rage burn through her veins, but she kept her expression neutral. "You murdered him."
"I eliminated a threat to the program. Just like I'll eliminate Lorenzo when he comes charging in here like a knight in shining armor." Vance moved closer with the syringe. "This will help you relax, my dear. The breeding process goes much smoother when the female is... compliant."
Elena's enhanced hearing picked up sounds from the corridor outside—footsteps, muffled voices, the distinctive click of weapons being checked. Lorenzo was already here.
"He's coming for me," Elena said with satisfaction.
"Of course he is. Men are so predictably stupid when it comes to their obsessions." Vance raised the syringe. "Too bad he'll arrive just in time to watch you submit to your new mate."
Elena smiled, and it was a terrible thing to see. "Dr. Vance?"
"Yes?"
"You made one critical mistake."
"And what's that?"
Elena's restraints snapped like paper as her enhanced strength fully manifested. "You assumed I needed rescuing."
Before Vance could react, Elena was on her feet and across the room. She caught his wrist just as he tried to inject her, applying pressure until he dropped the syringe.
"Where are the other enhanced individuals?" Elena demanded.
"You'll never find them," Vance gasped.
Elena increased the pressure on his wrist until she heard bones crack. "Try again."
"Sub-level three," Vance wheezed. "Cells twelve through twenty-six."
"Access codes?"
"I won't—"
Elena's free hand closed around his throat, just tight enough to make breathing difficult. "Dr. Vance, I've discovered I have very little patience for people who hurt innocent people. What are the access codes?"
Vance's face was turning purple, but his eyes held defiant hatred. "Even if you escape, even if you free them, there are dozens of other facilities. Hundreds of other enhanced individuals. You can't save them all."
"Maybe not," Elena agreed. "But I can start with these ones."
She tightened her grip slightly, and Vance's defiance crumbled.
"Seven-seven-Alpha-Nine," he gasped.
Elena released him, letting him collapse to the floor. "Thank you for your cooperation."
She was heading for the door when Vance called out behind her: "Elena!"
She turned to find him holding a small device, his finger hovering over a red button.
"Insurance policy," he explained, his voice hoarse. "One push of this button, and every cell on sub-level three floods with toxic gas. You have a choice—stay here and submit to the breeding program, or watch fourteen innocent people die."
Elena stared at him, seeing the madness in his eyes. He would do it. He would murder innocent people just to maintain control over her.
"You're insane," Elena said quietly.
"I'm evolved," Vance corrected. "The future of humanity requires difficult choices."
Elena heard gunfire in the corridor outside—Lorenzo and his team had engaged the facility's security forces. The battle was intense, getting closer.
"Choose, Elena," Vance said. "Submit to me, or watch them die."
Elena looked at the device in his hand, calculating distances and reaction times. Even with her enhanced speed, she might not be able to reach him before he triggered the gas.
But there was another option.
Elena closed her eyes and reached for abilities she'd never fully tested, genetic modifications she was only beginning to understand. According to Mia, Elena's presence made other enhanced individuals stronger. But what if it worked in reverse? What if she could suppress abilities instead of enhancing them?
She focused on Vance, extending her consciousness toward him, looking for the genetic markers that gave him his enhanced longevity and strength.
And then she began to shut them down.
Vance screamed as his enhanced abilities suddenly failed him. Without his modified genetics, he was just a middle-aged man who'd been living beyond normal human lifespan. His body began to age rapidly, decades of postponed cellular breakdown catching up to him in seconds.
The device clattered from his suddenly arthritic fingers.
Elena snatched it up as Vance collapsed, his enhanced physiology failing catastrophically.
"You're right about one thing," Elena said, looking down at him. "Evolution requires difficult choices."
She crushed the device in her enhanced grip, ensuring it could never be used.
The laboratory door exploded inward, and Lorenzo burst through with his weapon raised. His dark eyes swept the room, taking in Vance's collapsed form and Elena standing free.
"Elena," Lorenzo breathed, lowering his gun.
She ran to him, throwing herself into his arms with desperate relief. Lorenzo caught her, holding her tight against his chest.
"I thought I'd lost you," Lorenzo whispered against her hair.
"Never," Elena said fiercely. "I told you to find me."
"Always," Lorenzo promised.
Their moment was interrupted by Marcus appearing in the doorway. "We need to move. More security forces incoming."
"The other captives are on sub-level three," Elena said, pulling away from Lorenzo. "Cells twelve through twenty-six."
"Maria and the others are already on it," Marcus reported. "But Elena, there's something you need to know."
"What?"
"This isn't the only facility. We intercepted communications—there are at least six other sites holding enhanced individuals." Marcus's expression was grim. "And they're all connected to a central command center."
Elena looked at Lorenzo, seeing the same determination in his eyes that she felt in her own heart.
"Then we shut them all down," Elena said simply.
"Elena," Lorenzo said carefully, "that's not just a rescue mission. That's a war."
Elena thought about the children she'd seen on Vance's monitors, about all the enhanced individuals being held like livestock, about the breeding programs and the auctions and the casual way these people traded human lives.
"Then it's a war," Elena said, her voice carrying deadly certainty. "And I intend to win it."
Lorenzo's smile was sharp and predatory. "My kind of woman."
As they fought their way out of the facility, Elena realized something had fundamentally changed inside her. She wasn't just a victim trying to survive anymore, or even a woman trying to save her friends.
She was becoming something else entirely.
Something that monsters like Vance would learn to fear.
But first, she had a more immediate concern. As they reached the facility's exit, Elena could hear helicopters approaching. Too many helicopters.
"Lorenzo," Elena said urgently, "we have company."
Lorenzo looked up at the sky, where military aircraft were converging on their position from multiple directions.
"Time to go," he said grimly.
But as they ran for their escape vehicles, Elena couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into an even bigger trap.
One that had been years in the making.
And this time, all the enhanced abilities in the world might not be enough to save them.
