The Power

Black eye, a chipped molar, and bruises all over her arms. Brianna had been in three fights in a span of two weeks. And she knew if she stayed there any longer, her face would be unrecognizable. She’d gone to bed every night since her being there. And like a fool, hoped her father would come charging through the door. That he’s strong security and love would come back to protect her. Or just a warm and loving hug from her mother. Her sweet smile and brilliant brown eyes showing her daughter everything would be okay as long as she toughed it out. But sitting in the house manager’s office, Brianna had the sinking fear she’d never be okay again. Especially when she met a new feature of her life. Her social worker, David Rodman. With her face set to impenetrable, Brianna looked at her social worker with disdain. He was in his thirties and looked like Pete Davidson and Steve Harvey’s love child. It was kind of creepy as the slim jim mixed racial man peered at her. His gaze appreciative even as Brianna sat miserable and uncomfortable. Bald head shining in the light as his bushy beard twitched, the black bags decorating his eyes showed as dark bruises. Almost as dark as her black eye on her ebony skin. “So, your Aunt Dallas is nowhere to be found,” He was telling her in his deep voice, “And there is no one else we can find to contact. Your older brother is still unattainable and neither your Uncle Raymond nor Aunt Georgia wish to take you back.” Brianna coughed as the lump in her throat grew. She didn’t want to show this man how much that had upset her and decided instead to be strong. Even if it was an act. “Fine, I want to be emancipated.” Not at all shocked Brianna was intelligent enough to ask for that, David made a sucking noise. He knew it was his job to help, but the prick in front of her wanted Brianna to need him. It was the only way he could get what he wanted from her. “Well Brianna,” He told her cockily sitting back, “that could be done. But it could take up to six months or a year. Depending on when your case is brought before a judge. And you’ll have to prove you can afford to take care of yourself and live on your own. No help from others.” Brianna shrugged not even worrying about that, “I can do that. But I can’t stay here for another six months or a year.” David threw his hands up, “Eh, I don’t know what to tell you sweetie. I mean I can try to get it pushed up as quick as possible. But it’d take a lot of work.” Not in the mood for David’s subtle hint he could help her out but didn’t feel like it, Brianna hissed, “But you’re my social worker. You’re supposed to help me.” Smirking the asshole taunted, “True. But I also need to help myself sometimes. And if helping me and helping you can go hand and hand, how about we do that?” David stood up as he let the blinds down in the office. Coming up behind her, Brianna fought tears as he stroked his fingers through her large curly afro. Inhaling the light coco butter and honey scent, David purred, “How about you just relax. And let me help myself, and then after we can talk about helping you.” And as his hand dipped down in the front of his shirt, David copped a feel of Brianna’s chest. She closed her eyes trembling as he kept purring his perverted thoughts in her ear. Feeling hot all over, Brianna could barely breath as all her pain bubbled up to the service. And as David began to try and yank her up, she screamed as a pain erupted in her head. David fell back against the wall as a white light flooded from Brianna’s chest. Feeling his head began to bleed, David called for help thinking he was attacked by a weapon. And then the light stopped coming from Brianna’s chest as soon as it started, making Brianna stumbled back. “H-how did you-.” David started to slur out, but then he fell unconscious leaving Brianna shaken. Confused and disoriented, Brianna ran from the room quaking with every step. Shona, the house manager, came running out of a room of the younger kids. The last thing she saw of the teenager was Brianna’s back as she ran out of the group home.
