Chapter 4: The Name Written in Blood

The piercing alarm echoed through every corner of the house, replacing the eerie silence with a sense of impending disaster. Leila's heart lurched. She had barely caught her breath after escaping the hunters, and now danger had found her again. Damien moved swiftly toward a sleek control panel mounted beside the living room wall. His fingers danced across the illuminated screen with practiced precision. Several security cameras appeared on a large monitor. Leila stepped closer despite herself. At first she saw nothing except darkness beyond the iron gates. Then movement. Black vehicles emerged from the shadows one after another, stopping just outside the property. Their headlights remained off, making them appear like predators waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Men dressed entirely in black climbed out. Each of them carried strange metallic cases instead of ordinary weapons. Leila's stomach tightened. "They're here because of me." Damien did not deny it. "Yes." She swallowed hard. "I should leave." "No." "They will destroy this place." "They will try." His calmness frustrated her. "Why are you so calm?" "Because panic has never won a battle." Before Leila could reply, another monitor flickered to life. A middle aged man with silver hair appeared on the screen. His face carried deep scars, and his sharp eyes reflected years of experience. "Damien," the man said. "The eastern barrier has been breached." "I know." "They're using Resonance Keys." Damien's expression hardened. "So they finally revealed them." The man noticed Leila standing nearby. "So this is her." Leila frowned. "You know me?" The man gave a slow nod. "I know who you are." "I don't even know who I am." Pain briefly crossed the man's face. "You will." The transmission ended abruptly. Leila turned toward Damien. "Who was that?" "Gabriel." "That's all?" "That is enough for now." Leila sighed in frustration. Everyone seemed determined to answer every question with another mystery. The lights suddenly flickered. A low vibration rolled beneath the floor. Damien looked toward the ceiling. "They've activated the first wave." "What does that mean?" Instead of answering, he walked to a nearby cabinet and entered a security code. The cabinet opened silently. Inside were several firearms, combat knives, medical kits, and unfamiliar devices glowing with faint blue light. Leila stared at them. "You were expecting a war." "I've been expecting it for years." He picked up one of the glowing devices and slipped it into his jacket. Then he turned toward her. "No matter what happens next, stay behind me." Leila folded her arms. "I am tired of hiding." "You won't survive if you don't." His voice carried enough certainty to silence her. A deafening explosion shook the building. The windows trembled violently. Dust drifted from the ceiling. Leila instinctively grabbed the edge of a nearby table. Another explosion followed. This one much closer. Somewhere downstairs, glass shattered. Nora ran into the room. Her breathing was uneven. "They're inside the outer compound." Damien nodded. "Take Leila underground." Leila immediately shook her head. "No." Nora looked at her pleadingly. "Please." "I am done running." Damien's eyes locked onto hers. "This isn't bravery." "What is it then?" "Desperation." Leila stepped closer until only a short distance separated them. "You keep telling me nothing." "I tell you what keeps you alive." "I deserve the truth." "You deserve to stay breathing." Their standoff was interrupted by another violent impact. The entire house shook. A loud metallic groan echoed through the walls. "The western entrance has fallen," Nora whispered. Damien closed his eyes briefly. "They're faster than expected." Leila looked between them. "Who exactly are these people?" Damien finally answered. "They're not ordinary hunters." "Then who are they?" "The Black Covenant." The name settled heavily in the room. Leila had never heard it before. Nora's face visibly paled. "They sent the Covenant?" she whispered. Damien nodded. "They know what she's becoming." Leila looked at both of them. "What am I becoming?" Neither answered. The silence hurt more than words ever could. Suddenly every light in the room went out. Darkness swallowed everything. Only the emergency lights remained, casting long crimson shadows across the walls. Leila heard footsteps. Not inside. Above. Someone was walking across the roof. Then another. Then several more. The sound spread across the entire building. Her breathing quickened. "They're everywhere." Damien slowly drew a handgun. "No." He looked toward the ceiling. "They're surrounding us." A loud crash erupted overhead. Pieces of plaster rained onto the floor. Something heavy landed upstairs. Then another. They had entered the house. Nora gasped. "They're inside." Damien grabbed Leila's wrist. "Move." He pulled her toward a hidden doorway behind the bookshelf. The shelf slid aside automatically, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness. Leila hesitated. "What is down there?" "A chance." They hurried down the stairs. The hidden door sealed itself behind them. The underground corridor stretched far ahead, illuminated by dim lights embedded in the walls. The air felt cooler. Older. Almost forgotten. Leila noticed strange symbols carved into the stone. They looked ancient. She reached out to touch one. The moment her fingertips brushed the carving, a sharp pain shot through her hand. She cried out. The symbol suddenly glowed with brilliant golden light. The entire corridor trembled. Every symbol along the walls ignited one after another. Nora stared in disbelief. "It activated." Damien's expression darkened. "So the stories were true." Leila stepped back, staring at her own hand. A tiny cut had appeared across her palm. One drop of blood fell onto the stone floor. The instant it landed, the underground chamber erupted with blinding light. Ancient voices echoed from every direction. Leila covered her ears. The whispers spoke together in a language she had never learned. Yet somehow... She understood every word. "The Daughter has returned." Tears filled her eyes. "No..." "The Blood Bearer has awakened." Images exploded inside her mind. A woman wearing a white robe. A massive temple burning beneath a crimson sky. Children crying. A hand covered in blood reaching toward her. Then one final image. A stone throne. Upon it was carved a single name. LEILA VOSS She stumbled backward, breathing heavily. "How is my name there?" Damien's face had turned pale. "It shouldn't be." Nora slowly looked at him. "You told me the throne was only a legend." "So I believed." The ground began to shake again. This time it did not stop. Cracks spread across the ancient floor. From somewhere deep beneath the chamber came the sound of something enormous waking after centuries of silence. Then the mysterious voice inside Leila whispered once more. Not with amusement. Not with comfort. But with absolute certainty. "They have found the throne." "And now..." "They have come for their queen."
