Chapter 5: The Throne of Desire

1127 Words
Leila stood motionless, unable to tear her eyes away from the ancient throne. The chamber was alive. Golden light poured from the symbols carved into the walls, casting long shadows that danced across the stone floor. The air pulsed with an invisible energy that seemed to breathe in rhythm with her heartbeat. She swallowed hard. "This cannot be real." The words barely escaped her lips before another tremor shook the chamber. Dust drifted from the ceiling. The whispers grew louder. "Daughter of the First Blood." "The chosen one." "The final bearer." Leila covered her ears. "Stop!" The voices ignored her. They continued chanting in a language that sounded ancient, yet every word settled into her mind with perfect clarity. Damien stepped in front of her. "Do not listen to them." "I cannot stop." "You have to." Leila looked at him, desperation filling her eyes. "They're inside my head." Damien's jaw tightened. "I know." She stared at him. "You know?" Before he could answer, the chamber shook violently once more. A loud c***k echoed beneath the floor. The ancient throne began to glow. Leila watched as thin streams of golden light stretched from the throne toward her like living threads. The moment they touched her skin, her entire body became rigid. Her eyes widened. A flood of memories exploded inside her mind. She saw endless deserts beneath a crimson sky. She saw warriors kneeling before a woman whose face remained hidden beneath a golden veil. She saw rivers stained red with blood. Cities burned. Kingdoms collapsed. An enormous hand reached toward the heavens while thousands of voices cried out in fear. Then everything vanished. Leila gasped and collapsed onto one knee. Nora rushed toward her. "Leila!" "I'm fine." But she was not. Her heart pounded painfully. She could still see fragments of those impossible visions. None of them felt like dreams. They felt like memories. Damien crouched beside her. "What did you see?" Leila struggled to breathe evenly. "I don't know." He looked directly into her eyes. "Tell me." "There was a woman." His expression changed instantly. "What woman?" "I couldn't see her face." "What else?" "There were cities burning." Damien remained silent. "There was blood everywhere." His face grew even more serious. "And there was a throne." Nora looked nervously at Damien. He slowly stood. "It has started." Leila looked between them. "What has started?" Neither answered immediately. She was growing tired of everyone treating her like fragile glass. She stood despite the dizziness. "Enough." Her voice echoed across the chamber. "I deserve the truth." Damien finally nodded. "Very well." He walked toward the ancient throne. "The Fingers of Desire are not simply a power." Leila waited. "They are an inheritance." She frowned. "From whom?" "The First Queen." The title sent another strange sensation through her chest. Damien continued. "Centuries ago there existed a woman capable of shaping reality through human desire." Leila listened silently. "People worshipped her." "They feared her." "They loved her." "They betrayed her." His voice became quieter. "Before she died, she divided her power so that no single person could ever possess it completely again." Leila slowly shook her head. "I don't understand." "You carry the final fragment." The chamber fell silent. Leila laughed softly. It was not amusement. It was disbelief. "You're telling me I inherited the power of some ancient queen?" "Yes." "That sounds impossible." "It should." Nora finally spoke. "But impossible things have always followed you." Leila looked toward her. "What do you mean?" Nora hesitated. "You don't remember your childhood, do you?" Leila froze. "No." "You've always wondered why." Leila nodded slowly. "I remember almost nothing before I turned ten." Nora lowered her eyes. "That wasn't an accident." Before Leila could ask another question, an enormous explosion echoed above them. The underground chamber trembled violently. Stone fragments rained from the ceiling. Damien immediately looked upward. "They've reached the lower level." "So quickly?" Nora whispered. "They knew exactly where to search." Leila felt fear creeping back into her chest. "They're coming here." Damien nodded once. "They are." Another deafening crash followed. This time the hidden stone doorway behind them cracked down the middle. A massive dent appeared in its center. Someone was trying to force it open. Again. Another impact. The c***k widened. Nora stepped backward. "They'll break through." Damien reached into his jacket and removed the strange glowing device he had carried earlier. He activated it. A blue barrier spread across the damaged doorway. "It won't hold for long," he said. Leila looked at him. "What do we do?" Damien looked toward the throne. "There is only one option." She followed his gaze. "The throne?" He nodded. "You must sit on it." Leila stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "Absolutely not." "It is the only way." "I don't even know what it does." "Neither do I." She blinked. "You want me to risk my life based on a guess?" "It's not a guess." "What is it then?" "A prophecy." Leila closed her eyes briefly. "I am so tired of prophecies." Another violent impact struck the doorway. The glowing barrier flickered. Hairline fractures spread across its surface. Damien's voice became firmer. "If the Black Covenant reaches you before the throne accepts or rejects you, everything ends tonight." Leila looked toward the ancient seat. Golden light continued flowing around it. It almost seemed to be waiting. Waiting for her. The whispers returned. Not loud this time. Gentle. Patient. "Come home." Her feet moved before she consciously decided to walk. Step after step. She approached the throne. Every heartbeat echoed through the chamber. The closer she came, the brighter the carvings became. The air itself felt warm. Alive. She stopped directly before it. It was beautiful. Ancient symbols covered every surface. At its center was an unfamiliar crest. Without realizing it, Leila reached out and placed her hand upon one of the carvings. The throne answered instantly. Golden light erupted upward like a pillar reaching the ceiling. The entire chamber shook. Damien shielded his eyes. Nora fell backward. Leila cried out as overwhelming energy rushed through her body. Her hair lifted into the air. Her eyes slowly opened. They were no longer brown. They had become pure gold. Far above them, the reinforced stone doorway finally exploded inward. Smoke filled the entrance. Several figures stepped through. Each wore black armor marked with a crimson symbol across the chest. At their center stood a tall woman with silver hair and cold blue eyes. She smiled the moment she saw Leila. Then, without hesitation, she slowly knelt. Every member of the Black Covenant followed her. The entire chamber fell silent. The silver haired woman lowered her head and spoke words that froze Damien where he stood. "Welcome home..." "Your Majesty."
