Silence consumed the ancient chamber.
The members of the Black Covenant remained on one knee, their heads bowed before Leila. Not one of them dared to look directly at her.
The golden light surrounding the throne continued to pulse, wrapping around her like flowing ribbons.
Leila stared at the kneeling warriors in disbelief.
She took an uneasy step backward.
"No."
Her voice echoed through the chamber.
The silver haired woman slowly lifted her head. Her face remained calm, almost reverent.
"My Queen."
"I am not your queen."
"You are."
"I don't even know who you are."
The woman smiled faintly.
"My name is Cassandra."
She lowered her head once again.
"I have waited twenty years for your return."
Leila looked helplessly toward Damien.
"Tell her she's wrong."
Damien remained silent.
His expression was grim.
The silence was answer enough.
Leila's heartbeat quickened.
"This is madness."
Cassandra rose gracefully to her feet.
"It may seem that way because your memories remain sealed."
"I have no memories to seal."
"You do."
Leila shook her head repeatedly.
"No."
"You were born into this destiny."
"I was born an ordinary girl."
Cassandra's eyes softened with pity.
"That is what they wanted you to believe."
Leila felt anger replacing fear.
"Stop speaking as if you know my life."
"I do."
"You know nothing about me."
"I know that when you were four years old, your mother died protecting you."
Leila froze.
Her breathing stopped.
She had no memory of her mother.
Not a single one.
Yet hearing those words stirred something deep inside her.
A brief image flashed across her mind.
Gentle hands brushing through her hair.
A woman humming softly.
Warm laughter.
The image vanished before she could hold onto it.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"Who was she?"
Cassandra smiled sadly.
"A great queen."
Damien stepped forward.
"Enough."
His voice carried authority that echoed through the chamber.
"You will not manipulate her."
Cassandra turned toward him.
"You have protected her well."
"I wasn't protecting her for you."
"I know."
The two stared at one another with years of unspoken history between them.
Leila noticed it immediately.
"You know each other."
Neither answered.
She raised her voice.
"You both know each other."
Damien finally nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
Before he could speak, Cassandra answered instead.
"He was once one of us."
Leila looked at Damien in complete shock.
"What?"
Damien closed his eyes briefly.
"It is true."
"You belonged to them?"
"I did."
"You hunted people like me?"
His silence was all the confirmation she needed.
Pain spread across her face.
"So everything has been a lie."
"No."
"You should have told me."
"I couldn't."
"You wouldn't."
Damien lowered his gaze.
"You are right."
Leila felt her chest tighten.
The one person she had reluctantly begun to trust had hidden the biggest truth of all.
Cassandra watched quietly.
"You see now."
Leila turned sharply toward her.
"I see nothing except lies."
Cassandra sighed.
"Then perhaps it is time for honesty."
She slowly removed a silver pendant hanging around her neck.
Inside was a faded photograph.
She extended it toward Leila.
With trembling fingers, Leila accepted it.
Her breath caught.
The photograph showed a smiling woman holding a little girl no older than four.
The little girl had long dark hair.
Brown eyes.
She wore a tiny necklace shaped like an open hand.
Leila recognized the child immediately.
It was her.
Her hands began to shake.
The woman holding her looked familiar despite the years she could not remember.
Something inside her heart recognized that smile.
"My mother."
Cassandra nodded.
"Queen Elena."
Leila stared at the photograph as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I don't remember her."
"They made sure you wouldn't."
"Who did?"
"The Order of Desire."
Damien looked toward Cassandra.
"That is enough."
"No."
Cassandra's voice became firm.
"She deserves to know."
Leila slowly lifted her head.
"What did they do to me?"
Cassandra answered gently.
"They erased your childhood."
Every word felt like a blade.
Leila staggered backward.
"No."
"They feared what you would become."
"No."
"They believed removing your memories would weaken the inheritance."
Leila covered her ears.
"Stop."
"But destiny cannot be erased."
"Please."
"It only waits."
Leila dropped to her knees.
Her head pounded violently.
Images began flashing uncontrollably.
Fire.
Blood.
Screaming.
A woman running through a burning hallway carrying a child.
Soldiers chasing them.
Someone shouting.
"Protect the princess."
Another explosion echoed through the chamber.
Leila cried out.
The visions disappeared.
She struggled to breathe.
Damien knelt beside her.
"Look at me."
She couldn't.
Everything felt broken.
Everything she believed about herself was collapsing.
He gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Leila."
She finally looked into his eyes.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
His expression softened for the first time.
"You are still Leila."
"Am I?"
"Yes."
"What if they're right?"
He did not answer immediately.
Instead he said quietly,
"Your past does not decide your future."
Before she could reply, the entire chamber shook once again.
This tremor was unlike the others.
It was stronger.
Far stronger.
Cracks spread across every wall.
Golden light flickered violently.
Cassandra's face lost all color.
"No."
Damien stood instantly.
"What is happening?"
She looked toward the ceiling.
"They've awakened it."
A deep roar echoed from somewhere beneath the throne.
The sound did not resemble any animal.
It sounded ancient.
Powerful.
Hungry.
Leila slowly turned toward the throne.
The golden light disappeared.
Darkness replaced it.
The ancient carvings blackened one by one.
Then a massive c***k split the floor directly beneath the throne.
Cold air surged upward from the abyss below.
Something enormous moved within the darkness.
Two glowing crimson eyes slowly opened.
The mysterious voice inside Leila whispered once more.
Its tone was no longer calm.
It carried fear.
"The Guardian has awakened."
"It remembers the betrayal."
"And it no longer knows friend from enemy."
The enormous creature began to rise from beneath the throne.
Its roar shook the entire chamber.
For the first time since meeting Leila, Damien Cross looked genuinely afraid.
