Chapter 2: The First Escape

Leila stood trapped between breath and silence as the hunters closed in on the narrow alley. The world around her felt tighter, as if the walls themselves were leaning inward to witness what she was about to become. Her back pressed against the cold surface behind her. Her fingers trembled slightly, though she hated that her body still showed fear when she tried so hard to bury it. Damien Cross did not move away from her side. He remained calm, almost unnaturally so, like a man who had already accepted every possible outcome and chosen to stand in the middle of all of them. The men at the entrance of the alley advanced slowly. Their steps were synchronized in a way that made Leila’s stomach tighten. These were not ordinary men. There was no hesitation in them. No curiosity. Only purpose. One of them spoke again. “She is confirmed. Take her alive if possible. Eliminate resistance.” Leila’s throat tightened. Take her alive. That meant they wanted her for something far worse than death. She did not fully understand what she was, but she understood enough to know that people like this did not hunt ordinary women. Her fingers curled slowly into fists. Damien’s voice came beside her, low and controlled. “Do not run toward the exit. They want you to panic.” Leila turned her head slightly. “Then what do you suggest I do,” she whispered sharply. Damien did not look at her. His eyes remained on the approaching men. “You stay close to me.” A strange irritation rose in her chest. “Why should I trust you” He finally looked at her then. His gaze was steady, unreadable, almost frustrating in how calm it was. “Because I have no reason to lie to you in the middle of this.” That answer was not comforting, but it was logical in a way Leila could not immediately dismiss. Before she could respond, the first hunter moved. Everything happened too fast after that. The alley filled with motion. One of the men rushed forward with unnatural speed, and Damien moved just as quickly. Leila barely saw the shift of his body before he struck the attacker with precise force, sending him crashing into the wall. The sound echoed sharply. Leila froze. He was not just a businessman. That much was now obvious. The remaining hunters reacted immediately. Two of them advanced on Damien while another shifted toward her. Leila stepped back instinctively, but the man coming toward her moved faster than expected. Too fast. Her breath caught. And then something inside her responded. A strange pressure spread through her chest, radiating outward like heat trying to escape a locked space. Her vision blurred slightly at the edges. The man reached for her. Leila did not think. She reacted. A sudden pulse of energy burst outward from her body without physical movement. The air between them distorted for a fraction of a second. The hunter stopped abruptly. Confusion crossed his face. Then he staggered backward as if struck by an invisible force. Leila stared at her own hands. “What was that,” she whispered. The voice inside her returned immediately, softer now, almost pleased. “You are remembering.” Her breath became uneven. “I did not do anything,” she whispered. But she knew she had. Behind her, Damien fought two men with controlled efficiency. He moved like someone trained not just to survive violence but to end it quickly. Each movement was precise. Economical. Deadly. One of the hunters tried to flank him, but Damien grabbed his arm and twisted, forcing him to the ground with brutal efficiency. Leila watched in shock. This was not normal. None of this was normal. Another hunter rushed her again. This time she did not wait. The pressure inside her surged once more, stronger than before. She felt something inside her respond like a living thing stretching after a long sleep. The air around her shimmered faintly. The man stopped mid step again, but this time he did not recover. He dropped to his knees, clutching his head as if something invisible had invaded his mind. Leila stumbled backward, horrified. “I am not doing this,” she said urgently. But the voice disagreed. “You are finally opening the door.” Damien’s voice cut through the chaos. “Leila move now” She looked up. The remaining hunters were regrouping. One of them reached into his jacket and pulled out something metallic. A device. He activated it. A low vibration spread through the alley. Leila immediately felt it in her bones. Her knees weakened slightly. Damien noticed instantly. “Psychic dampener,” he said sharply. “They are suppressing your response.” Leila turned to him. “My response to what” But Damien did not answer directly. He grabbed her wrist. His touch was firm but not painful. “Run with me,” he said. Before she could resist, he pulled her forward. They ran. The alley became a blur of motion as they escaped through narrow passages and broken pathways. Behind them, the hunters followed, but their speed was affected by the device. Leila struggled to keep up, her mind spinning. “Why are they after me,” she gasped. Damien did not slow down. “Because you are not supposed to exist openly.” “That is not an answer,” she snapped. He finally glanced at her while still moving. “It is the only one that matters right now.” They turned sharply into another street, merging briefly with civilians. The sudden normality felt surreal after the violence. But Damien did not stop. He led her to a parked vehicle hidden between two larger cars. “Get in,” he said. Leila hesitated. Every instinct told her to refuse. But the sound of distant footsteps made her decision for her. She got inside. Damien entered the driver seat immediately and started the engine. The car pulled away quickly. Leila looked out the window as the city blurred past. Her breathing was still uneven. Her hands still trembled. After a long silence, she finally spoke. “You knew they were coming for me.” Damien kept his eyes on the road. “Yes.” “That means you are involved.” A pause. Then he answered. “Yes.” Leila turned toward him sharply. “You expect me to trust you after that” Damien’s expression remained unchanged. “No.” That answer surprised her. She frowned. “No” He nodded slightly. “I expect you to survive long enough to decide what you want to do with the truth.” Leila leaned back in the seat, overwhelmed. Her mind replayed everything that had just happened. The men. The force inside her. The voice. The strange reaction of reality itself bending around her presence. She closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again, she asked quietly. “What am I” Damien did not answer immediately. The silence stretched for several seconds. Finally, he spoke. “You are the reason they are willing to burn entire cities.” Leila felt her chest tighten. “That is not possible.” “It is already happening,” he replied. The car continued through the city, but Leila no longer recognized it the same way. Everything felt slightly altered, as if she had stepped into a version of the world that had been hiding behind reality her entire life. After a while, Damien spoke again. “There is a place you will be safer for now.” Leila looked at him. “For now” He nodded once. “Yes. Until they adapt again.” Her stomach sank slightly. “Who are they” Damien’s jaw tightened. “The Order of Desire.” The name settled in the air like something heavy. Leila repeated it slowly. “The Order of Desire.” The voice inside her whispered again, softer than before. “Home is calling.” Leila pressed her hand against her chest again. Her heartbeat had changed. It was no longer only fear. Something else had begun to wake inside her. And somewhere deep in the distance of her awareness, she felt as if she had just crossed a point she could never return from.
