The contract

CHAPTER 5: THE CONTRACT Clara stood still in the middle of the room. The door behind her had already closed. Silence wrapped around her immediately—thick, heavy, unfamiliar. Ethan Blackwood stood near the large glass window, his back slightly turned as he looked outside. As if the world beyond this room mattered more than the person inside it. Clara tightened her grip on her handbag. “You brought me here,” she said firmly, breaking the silence. Her voice sounded smaller than she intended, but she didn’t back down. Ethan turned slowly. “Yes.” Just that. No explanation. No emotion. Clara frowned. “That’s it? I come all this way and all you say is ‘yes’?” A faint pause. Then Ethan walked toward the centre table with calm steps. Unhurried. Controlled. Like time itself moved differently around him. He placed a thin black folder on the table. Clara’s eyes dropped to it immediately. “What is that?” Ethan didn’t answer at first. Instead, he looked at her for a long moment. As if deciding how much she deserved to know. Then— “Sit.” Clara didn’t move. “I’m not sitting until you explain why I’m here.” A small silence followed. Not awkward. Heavy. Then Ethan spoke again. “You’re already here.” “That’s not an answer,” Clara said quickly. “It is,” he replied calmly. That made her more frustrated. Clara stepped forward slightly. “I don’t know you. I don’t know why I’m in your house. And I definitely don’t take orders from strangers.” For the first time, something subtle shifted in Ethan’s expression. Not anger. Interest. “You’re not afraid,” he said. Clara blinked. “Should I be?” A faint pause. “Most people are,” he replied simply. Clara shook her head slightly. “I’m not most people.” That statement hung in the air for a second longer than expected. Then Ethan turned his attention back to the folder. “Open it,” he said. Clara hesitated. Every instinct told her not to. But curiosity… won. Slowly, she stepped forward and picked it up. She opened it. And froze. CONTRACT AGREEMENT Her eyes locked on the bold title. Her heartbeat slowed for a second—then immediately picked up again. She flipped the page quickly. Lines. Clauses. Terms she didn’t fully understand yet. Her brows furrowed. “What… is this?” she asked quietly. Ethan’s voice remained steady. “An arrangement.” Clara looked up sharply. “You brought me here for a contract?” “Yes.” Her grip tightened on the folder. “I don’t understand. Why me?” Ethan watched her carefully. “You don’t need to understand everything yet.” “That’s not how life works!” A pause. Then Ethan stepped slightly closer—but not invading her space. Just enough for his presence to feel heavier. “In your world,” he said calmly, “maybe not.” Clara frowned. “And what is that supposed to mean?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he said something that made her pause. “You already stepped into this.” Clara shook her head. “No. I didn’t agree to anything.” “You picked up the card.” “That’s not—” “It was enough,” he interrupted quietly. Silence fell. Clara stared at him. “That makes no sense,” she whispered. Ethan turned slightly away, as if the conversation was already settled in his mind. “It will,” he said. Clara’s voice hardened slightly. “So what now? You expect me to sign this and just accept whatever this is?” Ethan finally looked at her again. “No.” That surprised her. “No?” she repeated. He nodded once. “I expect you to read it.” Clara frowned. “And if I refuse?” A long pause. For the first time, something unreadable passed through his expression. Then he spoke softly. “You’re free to walk away.” Clara blinked. That wasn’t what she expected. Ethan continued, voice calm but firm. “But once you understand what this contract means… walking away will no longer feel simple.” Silence. Clara looked down at the folder again. Her fingers tightened slightly around it. Something about his words didn’t feel like a threat. It felt like certainty. And that was worse. Ethan turned back toward the window. “Read it, Clara,” he said quietly. “Then decide.” Clara stood there for a long moment, staring at the contract in her hands. For the first time since this began… She wasn’t sure if she was being invited into something. Or trapped inside it.
