CHAPTER 20: THE FIRST STEP
Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Blackwood Estate, casting a warm glow across the living room.
For the first time since arriving at the estate, Clara woke without the weight of uncertainty pressing against her chest.
The contract had been signed.
The decision had been made.
There was no turning back now.
She sat at the edge of the bed for a moment, staring at her hands.
Only yesterday, she had written her name on a document that would change both her future and Ethan's.
Strangely, she didn't regret it.
Instead, she felt... calmer.
Not because all their problems had disappeared.
They hadn't.
Blackstone was still out there.
Questions about Ethan's past remained unanswered.
But one thing was different.
She no longer felt like she was facing everything alone.
After getting dressed, Clara made her way downstairs.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee drifted from the dining room.
She smiled to herself.
"If Ethan is already working while eating breakfast, I won't even be surprised."
As she stepped inside, she stopped.
Ethan wasn't reading reports.
His laptop was closed.
His phone rested on the table beside him.
He was simply drinking coffee.
He looked up when he noticed her.
"Good morning."
Clara blinked.
"You've been saying good morning a lot lately."
Ethan frowned slightly.
"Is that a problem?"
"No."
She smiled as she pulled out a chair.
"I just didn't know you knew how."
For the briefest moment, the corner of Ethan's lips lifted.
"So I've been told."
Clara laughed softly.
"You smiled again."
"I don't recall doing that."
"You're becoming predictable."
"I sincerely doubt that."
She shook her head.
"If someone had told me a few months ago that Ethan Blackwood would sit across from me arguing about whether he smiled, I would have laughed."
Ethan picked up his coffee.
"A few months ago, you were afraid to look me in the eye."
Clara couldn't deny it.
"That's true."
"What changed?"
She thought about the question longer than she expected.
"I got to know you."
Ethan remained silent.
"I realized the man everyone talks about isn't exactly the man who lives here."
He lowered his cup.
"And what kind of man lives here?"
Clara met his eyes.
"Someone who pretends he's stronger than he feels."
The room fell silent.
Ethan didn't argue.
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he looked away for a moment before quietly saying,
"You notice too much."
"I've heard that before."
"And you ignored it."
"I intend to keep ignoring it."
Another small smile escaped him.
Clara couldn't help noticing how different he looked whenever he allowed himself to relax.
He seemed younger.
Less distant.
More human.
Mrs. Dawson entered the room with breakfast and placed the dishes on the table.
"Good morning, Miss Clara. Mr. Blackwood."
"Good morning," Clara replied warmly.
Ethan gave a polite nod.
After Mrs. Dawson left, Clara looked at Ethan with curiosity.
"Can I ask you something?"
"You usually do."
She laughed.
"I'll take that as permission."
"It is."
She leaned forward slightly.
"Yesterday... when I handed you the contract..."
He looked at her.
"Were you really that surprised?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I expected you to think about it longer."
Clara smiled faintly.
"I did think about it."
"And?"
"I realized something."
Ethan waited.
"I wasn't signing because I felt pressured."
She paused.
"I signed because I believed you would keep your promise."
For the first time that morning, Ethan didn't know what to say.
Business deals were built on negotiations.
Contracts were built on conditions.
But trust...
Trust couldn't be written into any document.
It had to be earned.
And Clara had just told him she trusted him.
He drew a slow breath.
"I won't disappoint you."
She smiled.
"I know."
Those two words carried more weight than either of them expected.
For the rest of breakfast, neither of them felt the need to fill every silence.
Somehow, the quiet had become comfortable.
It no longer separated them.
It brought them together.
When Ethan finally stood, he picked up his jacket.
"I should leave for the office."
Clara nodded.
"Have a good day."
He took a few steps toward the door before stopping.
He turned back to look at her.
"Would you like to come with me today?"
Clara looked up in surprise.
"To Blackwood Corporation?"
"Yes."
She blinked.
"I thought you preferred keeping me away from work."
"I used to."
He held her gaze.
"But perhaps it's time you saw more of the world you've agreed to be part of."
Clara stared at him for a moment.
Then a smile slowly spread across her face.
"I'd like that."
Ethan gave a small nod.
"I'll wait five minutes."
As he walked out of the room, Clara watched him disappear down the hallway.
Without realizing it, she found herself smiling.
Maybe this wasn't just the beginning of an agreement anymore.
Maybe...
It was the first real step toward understanding each other.
Clara followed Ethan toward the entrance of the mansion, still trying to process his unexpected offer.
Going to Blackwood Corporation with him was something she hadn't expected.
Before, Ethan had always kept his business world separate from her.
Whenever conversations about work came up, he became distant.
Not because he didn't trust her.
But because he was used to carrying everything himself.
Now, things were changing.
As they stepped outside, Clara looked at him.
"You know, this is actually surprising."
Ethan glanced at her.
"What is?"
"You inviting me to your company."
He adjusted his jacket.
"Why?"
"Because the Ethan Blackwood I met before would have said something like, 'You don't need to involve yourself in things you don't understand.'"
A faint look of amusement crossed his face.
"That sounds accurate."
She smiled.
"At least you admit it."
"I am capable of admitting when I am wrong."
Clara looked at him.
"That might be the biggest surprise of all."
Ethan shook his head slightly as they walked toward the car.
For someone who had spent years protecting his emotions, these small conversations felt unfamiliar.
But with Clara, he didn't feel the need to constantly be guarded.
When they arrived at Blackwood Corporation, Clara immediately noticed the difference.
The building was exactly what she expected from Ethan.
Elegant.
Organized.
Powerful.
Employees moved quickly through the lobby, and everyone seemed to know exactly who Ethan was.
The moment he entered, the atmosphere changed.
People greeted him respectfully.
Some looked nervous.
Others looked impressed.
Clara watched quietly.
This was Ethan's world.
A world she had only heard about.
And now, for the first time, he was allowing her to see it.
Ethan noticed her looking around.
"What?"
She turned to him.
"Nothing."
"You were observing."
She smiled.
"Maybe I got that from you."
For a second, Ethan looked surprised.
Then he continued walking.
But Clara noticed the small smile he tried to hide.
As they entered the elevator, they stood beside each other in silence.
But unlike before, the silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It felt natural.
And Clara realized that was another thing that had changed.
She no longer felt like a stranger beside him.
When the elevator doors opened, Ethan led her toward his office.
"This is where you spend most of your time?"
"Yes."
Clara looked around.
"I can tell."
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"How?"
"Everything looks exactly like you."
He looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
She glanced around the office.
"Clean. Organized. Serious."
A small pause.
"But missing something."
Ethan frowned slightly.
"Missing what?"
Clara smiled.
"A little warmth."
For a moment, Ethan said nothing.
Because she wasn't talking about the office.
She was talking about him.
And somehow, he understood.
Before he could respond, Clara walked further into the room, unaware of the effect her words had.
Ethan watched her quietly.
And for the first time, he wondered if maybe allowing someone into his carefully controlled world wasn't a weakness.
Maybe it was something else.
Something he had been missing for a long time.
Clara spent the next few minutes looking around Ethan's office.
She had expected something impressive.
After all, everything about Ethan Blackwood carried a certain level of perfection.
The building.
The company.
The way people respected him.
But standing inside his office, she noticed something she hadn't expected.
Despite the expensive furniture and the large windows overlooking the city, the room felt strangely empty.
It looked like a place where someone worked.
Not somewhere someone lived.
"You really spend most of your life here, don't you?" Clara asked.
Ethan looked up from the documents on his desk.
"Work is important."
"That wasn't my question."
He paused.
Clara had a habit of doing that.
Asking questions that went beyond the obvious answer.
"Yes," he admitted.
She looked at him.
"Why?"
Ethan leaned back slightly.
"Because there is always something that needs to be done."
Clara sighed softly.
"There it is again."
"What?"
"The idea that if you stop working, everything will fall apart."
Ethan didn't respond immediately.
Because once again, she wasn't wrong.
For years, work had been the one thing he could control.
The one thing that didn't betray him.
The one thing that didn't leave.
Clara noticed his silence.
"You don't have to answer."
"I know."
"But you were thinking about it."
A small expression crossed his face.
"You really do notice too much."
She smiled.
"And you really do say that too much."
For a moment, the office felt different.
Less like the workplace of a powerful CEO.
More like two people having a normal conversation.
Later that morning, Ethan showed Clara around parts of the company.
He explained some of the departments and how different areas worked.
She listened carefully.
Not because she needed to understand every business detail.
But because she wanted to understand his world.
And Ethan noticed.
He noticed that she wasn't pretending.
She was genuinely interested.
When they returned to his office, Clara looked at him.
"You know, I understand something now."
"What?"
"Why people respect you."
Ethan looked surprised.
"Really?"
"Yes."
She nodded.
"Not because you're rich or because you own this company."
She looked around.
"It's because you built something."
The words affected him more than she realized.
Most people only saw the result.
The success.
The money.
The name.
Very few people saw the effort behind it.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
Clara smiled.
"You say that a lot."
"Because you give me reasons to."
She looked at him for a moment.
The answer was simple.
But it felt different.
Before, Ethan's words had always sounded controlled.
Carefully chosen.
Now, they felt honest.
That afternoon, Clara returned to the mansion before Ethan.
She spent time thinking about everything that had happened.
A few weeks ago, she never imagined she would be walking through Ethan Blackwood's company.
She never imagined he would ask for her opinion.
She never imagined the man who seemed impossible to reach would slowly become someone she could talk to.
When Ethan arrived later that evening, Clara was sitting in the living room.
"You had a good day?" she asked.
He removed his coat.
"Yes."
She smiled.
"That sounded almost normal."
"Almost?"
"Yes. You still sound like Ethan Blackwood."
He looked at her.
"I am Ethan Blackwood."
"I know."
She smiled.
"But sometimes you forget you're also just Ethan."
For a moment, he simply looked at her.
Then he sat down.
"You know what I realized today?"
"What?"
"That I haven't regretted my decision."
Clara became quiet.
She knew what he meant.
The contract.
The agreement.
The choice they had both made.
"I'm glad," she said softly.
A comfortable silence settled between them.
Then Ethan's expression changed slightly.
Not because something had gone wrong.
But because he remembered something.
"The situation with Blackstone isn't over."
Clara nodded.
"I know."
"I don't want you to worry."
She looked at him.
"Ethan."
He stopped.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Try to carry everything alone again."
He looked at her.
And this time, he didn't argue.
