CHAPTER 18:BEYOND THE CONTRACT
The morning at Blackwood Estate was quieter than usual.
Clara noticed it the moment she walked downstairs.
The mansion was always calm, but lately, the silence felt different. It wasn't the peaceful kind of silence. It was the kind that came when everyone was waiting for something to happen.
After everything they had discovered about Elias and the past Ethan had tried so hard to bury, Clara understood why.
There were too many unanswered questions.
Too many things Ethan kept locked away.
But despite all of that, there was something else she couldn't ignore.
The contract.
The agreement that had changed both their lives.
Clara had almost forgotten about it because everything else had taken over their attention. Blackstone. Ethan's past. The threats surrounding him.
It felt strange that something as simple as a piece of paper had once been the biggest problem between them.
She was finishing her breakfast when Ethan walked into the dining room.
As usual, he looked perfectly composed.
His suit was perfectly arranged. His expression was unreadable.
But Clara had learned enough about him to notice the small things.
The tiredness in his eyes.
The way he seemed lost in thought.
The way he carried every problem like it belonged only to him.
"Good morning," Clara said.
Ethan looked at her.
"Good morning."
She raised an eyebrow.
That was still unusual.
A few months ago, Ethan Blackwood barely said more than a few words to her.
Now, he actually greeted her.
Small changes.
But changes nonetheless.
After a few moments of silence, Ethan placed his coffee cup down.
"There is something we need to discuss."
Clara immediately became cautious.
Whenever Ethan used that tone, it usually meant something serious.
"What happened?"
"Nothing happened."
She looked at him suspiciously.
"Then why do you sound like you're about to announce bad news?"
A faint expression crossed his face.
"I didn't realize I had a specific tone for that."
"You do."
Ethan ignored the comment and stood up.
"Come with me."
Clara followed him to his study.
The moment she entered, she noticed a familiar object sitting on the desk.
A black folder.
The same type of folder that had changed her life.
The contract.
She looked at Ethan.
"Seriously?"
Ethan walked behind his desk.
"Yes."
Clara sighed.
"Ethan, we are talking about this now?"
He looked at her.
"Why wouldn't we?"
She crossed her arms.
"Because we have bigger things happening."
Her voice wasn't angry, but there was frustration in it.
"Blackstone is still a problem. Your family's past is affecting your present. There are things we don't even understand yet."
She looked at the folder.
"And you're worried about a contract?"
Ethan remained quiet for a moment.
Then he opened the folder.
"I'm not worried about the paper, Clara."
"Then what?"
"You."
The answer caught her off guard.
Ethan continued.
"This contract was created because both of us needed protection. You needed security. I needed a solution to a problem that was threatening my company."
He paused.
"But somewhere along the way, things became more complicated."
Clara looked away.
Because she knew he was right.
The situation between them was no longer as simple as an agreement.
They had started as strangers.
Two people forced into a situation neither of them planned.
But now...
Things were different.
"What exactly are you saying?" she asked.
Ethan turned a page.
"There are parts of the contract we haven't followed properly."
Clara frowned.
"Such as?"
"Maintaining the appearance of a genuine marriage."
She stared at him.
"Ethan..."
"I know."
His voice softened slightly.
"I know what you're thinking."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
A small silence followed.
"You think I'm treating this like another business arrangement."
Clara didn't answer.
Because that was exactly what she was thinking.
Ethan closed the folder.
"But I'm not."
For a moment, Clara simply looked at him.
The man in front of her was still Ethan Blackwood.
The cold CEO everyone feared.
The man who planned everything.
But lately, she was beginning to see that there was more behind that cold exterior.
"You know," Clara said quietly, "sometimes I think you forget that I'm a person and not another responsibility you have to manage."
Ethan's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough for her to notice.
"I don't see you that way."
"Then stop deciding everything alone."
The room became quiet.
Because that was something Clara had told him before.
And once again, she was right.
Ethan looked down at the contract.
"I am trying to protect you."
"And I appreciate that."
Her voice softened.
"But protecting me doesn't mean keeping me away from everything."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Ethan nodded.
A small movement.
But from him, it meant something.
"I understand."
Clara almost smiled.
She still wasn't used to him admitting when she had a point.
"So what now?" she asked.
Ethan looked at the folder.
"Now, we make sure we both understand what we agreed to."
Clara sat down.
"Fine."
She opened the contract.
"But if I find out there is some strange clause that says I have to follow you everywhere or pretend to be someone I'm not, I'm leaving."
Ethan looked at her.
"You are not leaving."
She raised an eyebrow.
"That sounded very confident."
"It was."
Despite herself, Clara smiled.
And for a brief moment, the tension between them disappeared.
They spent the next hour going through the details they had ignored.
Not as a CEO and a woman trapped in an agreement.
But as two people trying to understand what their relationship had become.
Later that morning, Ethan prepared to leave for work.
Clara watched him put on his coat.
"You really are going to the office after all this?"
"I have responsibilities."
She nodded.
"I know."
Ethan reached the door, then stopped.
"Clara."
She looked at him.
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
The simple words surprised her.
"For what?"
"For reminding me that not everything can be solved alone."
Before she could respond, Ethan walked out.
Clara stood there quietly.
Because for the first time, she felt like Ethan wasn't just allowing her into his life.
He was beginning to trust her.
And she didn't know why...
The drive to Blackwood Corporation was quieter than usual.
Ethan sat in the back seat of the car, looking through the documents his assistant had prepared for the day.
But his mind wasn't completely focused on work.
It kept returning to the conversation with Clara.
She had a way of saying things nobody else dared to say.
Most people saw Ethan Blackwood as someone impossible to challenge.
Someone who always had control.
Someone who never made mistakes.
But Clara never looked at him that way.
She questioned him.
She disagreed with him.
And strangely, instead of irritating him, it made him respect her more.
When the car arrived at the company, Ethan stepped out and immediately returned to the person everyone knew.
The CEO.
The man who built an empire through discipline and determination.
Employees greeted him as he walked through the building, and he responded with his usual calm nod.
Inside his office, the day moved quickly.
Meetings.
Reports.
Decisions that needed his approval.
Everything demanded his attention.
For a while, Ethan managed to push everything else aside and focus only on work.
Until his secretary entered.
"Mr. Blackwood."
Ethan looked up from his desk.
"Yes?"
She placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"This was delivered for you this morning."
Ethan looked at it.
"Who sent it?"
"There was no name attached."
His expression changed slightly.
"Where is the person who delivered it?"
"They left immediately after handing it over."
Ethan stared at the envelope.
For a few seconds, he didn't move.
Something about it felt wrong.
Not because it was unusual to receive documents.
But because whoever sent it wanted him to receive it personally.
Slowly, he opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
And the longer he read, the colder his expression became.
It wasn't a threat.
It wasn't a demand.
It was a reminder.
A reminder that the past he thought he had left behind was not finished with him.
Ethan placed the letter on his desk.
For a moment, he simply sat there.
Years ago, he would have handled something like this alone.
He would have locked it away.
He would have carried the burden without telling anyone.
But things were different now.
Clara was involved.
And whether he wanted to admit it or not, she had become someone whose opinion mattered.
Someone he trusted.
Ethan picked up the letter again and read it one more time.
Then he placed it inside the folder.
The rest of the day continued.
He attended his meetings.
He reviewed the company's progress.
He answered questions from his executives.
But the letter remained in the back of his mind.
By the time he returned to Blackwood Estate, the sun had already begun to set.
Clara was in the living room when she heard the sound of the door opening.
She looked up.
Ethan walked inside.
Immediately, she noticed something was different.
Not obvious.
Most people wouldn't notice.
But Clara did.
"You look like something happened."
Ethan removed his coat.
"You always notice too much."
She smiled slightly.
"Someone has to."
Usually, he would have avoided answering.
But this time, he didn't.
"There was something waiting for me at the office."
Her expression became serious.
"What kind of something?"
Ethan reached into his briefcase and removed the folder.
Then he placed the letter on the table.
Clara looked at him.
"You want me to read it?"
"Yes."
That one word surprised her.
Because Ethan Blackwood wasn't someone who easily shared information.
She picked up the letter and began reading.
The more she read, the more serious her expression became.
When she finished, she slowly looked back at him.
"This is connected to everything happening?"
Ethan nodded.
"Yes."
"And you were going to handle this alone?"
The question wasn't angry.
It was disappointed.
Ethan looked away.
"I used to."
"But not anymore."
His eyes moved back to hers.
Clara folded the letter carefully.
"We are in this together, Ethan."
He remained silent.
Because those words meant more than she realized.
Not because of the contract.
Not because they were pretending.
But because for the first time in years, Ethan felt like he wasn't standing alone against the world.
A quiet moment passed between them.
Then Clara spoke again.
"So what do we do now?"
Ethan looked at the letter.
"We find out why this was sent."
"And after that?"
His expression hardened slightly.
"Then we deal with whatever comes next."
Clara nodded.
She was still worried about what the future might bring.
But she also knew something had changed.
The distance between them wasn't as wide as it used to be.
They were still learning each other.
Still trying to understand what this agreement between them truly meant.
But for the first time...
They were facing the same direction.
And somewhere between a contract and a promise...
Something real had started to form.at meant more than she expected.
