Chapter 2: The Man Who Changed Everything The shrill sound of Clara Bennett's alarm shattered the silence of her tiny apartment. For a brief moment, she stared at the ceiling, confused. Then reality returned. Her father was gone. The apartment felt colder than ever. She slowly sat up, rubbing her swollen eyes. Sleep had offered little comfort. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw her father's smiling face... followed by the image of his coffin disappearing beneath the earth. A lump formed in her throat. "I have to keep going," she whispered to herself. There was no one left to say those words for her. She glanced at the framed photograph on the bedside table. Her father smiled back at her, the same warm smile that had always made her believe everything would be alright. Clara gently picked up the frame. "I miss you, Dad." Silence answered. After taking a deep breath, she stood and got ready for work. She couldn't afford another day at home. Not with unpaid bills covering the kitchen table. Not with debt collectors calling every few hours. Not with the landlord reminding her that rent was overdue. She needed every dollar she could earn. Even if it meant pretending her heart wasn't breaking. Rosewood Café buzzed with its usual morning energy. The smell of fresh coffee and warm pastries filled the air as customers poured in. "Clara!" Mrs. Dawson waved from behind the counter. "It's good to have you back." Clara forced a smile. "Thank you." Her manager studied her face for a second before speaking softly. "If today becomes too much, let me know." "I'll be okay." It wasn't true. But she had become good at lying. She tied her apron, picked up her order pad and stepped onto the café floor. The morning passed in a blur. "One vanilla latte." "Two cappuccinos." "Blueberry muffins for table five." Her feet never stopped moving. For the first time in days, work distracted her from the pain. Until... Her phone vibrated inside her apron pocket. Another unknown number. She ignored it. A minute later... It rang again. Then again. Clara frowned. Who kept calling? She slipped into the staff room during her short break and answered. "Hello?" "Miss Clara Bennett?" A cold male voice greeted her. "Yes?" "This is your final reminder regarding the outstanding debts left by your late father." Her stomach tightened. "We expect payment immediately." "I... I need more time." "You've already been given more time." The call ended. Clara lowered the phone with trembling hands. For several seconds, she couldn't breathe. How was she supposed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars? She barely earned enough to survive. "Clara?" She quickly wiped away the tears gathering in her eyes before returning to the café. No one needed to know. She would carry the burden alone. Just like her father had. Around noon... Something unusual happened. The conversations inside the café suddenly became quieter. The front door opened. A man stepped inside. He was tall. Well over six feet. His black tailored suit fit him perfectly, and an expensive silver watch rested against his wrist. His expression was unreadable. Cold. Calm. Powerful. Two security guards followed a respectful distance behind him. Every employee stopped working. A customer whispered, "Is that... Ethan Blackwood?" Another nodded immediately. "It is." "The CEO of Blackwood Holdings." "I can't believe he's here." "They say he owns half the city." "They also say he never smiles." Clara looked toward the entrance. So... That was Ethan Blackwood. She had seen his face in business magazines before. America's youngest billionaire. A man feared by competitors and admired by investors. But to her... He was simply another customer needing coffee. Mrs. Dawson hurried over. "Clara." "Yes?" "You'll take care of Table Seven." "What?" Mrs. Dawson lowered her voice. "Just be polite." "And whatever happens..." "Don't make a mistake." Clara nodded. Taking a steady breath, she picked up her order pad and walked toward the mysterious billionaire... Mrs. Dawson's warning echoed in Clara's ears. "Whatever happens... don't make a mistake." Taking a deep breath, Clara forced a professional smile and walked toward Table Seven. The man hadn't even looked at the menu. His attention remained on the city visible through the café's glass windows. For a moment, Clara wondered what someone like Ethan Blackwood could possibly be thinking about. She cleared her throat politely. "Good afternoon, sir." His eyes slowly shifted toward her. Gray. Sharp. Unreadable. For reasons she couldn't explain, Clara felt as though those eyes could see through every lie she had ever told. She straightened her shoulders. "My name is Clara, and I'll be serving you today. What would you like to order?" Without breaking eye contact, Ethan replied, "Black coffee." She scribbled it down. "Would you like anything else?" "No." His answer was short. Almost emotionless. "Alright. It'll be ready in a few minutes." She turned to leave. "Miss Bennett." Clara froze. Slowly, she looked back. "Yes?" "You look tired." Her eyebrows knitted together. She had never met this man before. How did he know her name? Had Mrs. Dawson mentioned it? Or had one of the other waitresses? Trying not to overthink it, she smiled politely. "It's been a long week." For the first time, something almost resembling sympathy crossed Ethan's face. It disappeared so quickly she wasn't even sure she had imagined it. "I see." That was all he said. Confused, Clara returned behind the counter. Emily, one of the younger waitresses, hurried toward her. "What did he say?" Clara shrugged. "He ordered black coffee." Emily stared at her. "That's it?" "Yes." "You don't understand." "What?" "That's Ethan Blackwood!" "I know." "No, you don't." Emily lowered her voice. "He's one of the richest men in America." "I heard." "They say people spend months trying to get five minutes of his time." Clara laughed softly. "Well... today he wanted five minutes with coffee." Emily shook her head. "I still can't believe you're so calm." The coffee machine beeped. Clara picked up the steaming cup and placed it carefully on a tray. "This is just another order." Or so she thought. She returned to Table Seven. "Here's your coffee, sir." As she gently placed the cup on the table, another customer hurried past without looking. His shoulder bumped Clara's arm. The cup tilted. A splash of hot coffee landed on Ethan's expensive black sleeve. The entire café fell silent. The customer who had bumped into her turned pale. "Oh my God!" "I'm so sorry!" Clara's heart nearly stopped. "I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Blackwood." She quickly reached for a napkin. "I'll clean it—" Before she could touch his jacket... A warm hand lightly caught her wrist. Not painfully. Not forcefully. Simply enough to stop her. She looked up. Ethan's expression remained calm. "It isn't necessary." Clara blinked. "...Excuse me?" "It was an accident." He released her hand. She stared at him in surprise. Around the café, whispers immediately spread. "I thought he'd fire someone." "I heard he once sued a company over damaged property." "Why is he so calm?" Mrs. Dawson looked just as shocked. Ethan casually picked up his coffee and took a sip. "It's good." Clara almost laughed in relief. "Thank you." She stepped back, still trying to understand the strange man sitting before her. For the next twenty minutes, Ethan remained seated. He wasn't using his phone. He wasn't talking to anyone. Instead... He occasionally glanced toward Clara as she worked. She noticed. It made her nervous. Every time she looked in his direction... His eyes were already on her. Not in a creepy way. More like... He was studying her. Trying to confirm something. Finally, he stood. He placed several crisp hundred-dollar bills on the table. Far more than the cost of a single cup of coffee. Clara hurried over. "Sir..." "I think you've paid too much." "I know." "I'll get your change." "No." She frowned. "You should keep it." "I can't." "Why?" "Because I didn't earn it." For the first time that afternoon... The corner of Ethan's lips lifted. Not quite a smile. Just enough to reveal he found her answer interesting. "Most people wouldn't refuse free money." Clara looked him directly in the eyes. "I'm not most people." For a long moment... Neither of them spoke. Then Ethan reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He removed a simple black business card. No flashy design. No gold lettering. Just his name. ETHAN BLACKWOOD Along with a private phone number. He placed it gently on the table between them. "If your life reaches a point where you have nowhere else to turn..." He paused. "...Call me." Clara looked from the card to his face. "I don't understand." "You will." Without another word, Ethan adjusted his jacket and walked toward the exit. His two bodyguards followed immediately. The café remained silent until the glass door closed behind him. Only then did everyone begin talking at once. "Did that really happen?" "He gave her his private card!" "I've worked here six years and have never seen anything like that!" Mrs. Dawson hurried over, staring at the black card in Clara's trembling hand. "Clara..." "What exactly just happened?" Clara had no answer. She stared at the card. One thought refused to leave her mind. How did the most powerful billionaire in the country know her name... and why did he want her to call him? She had no idea... That this simple black card was the beginning of a life she could never have imagined.
