The diamond ring felt heavier than steel shackles.
Olivia sat before the gilded vanity in Adrian’s penthouse suite, her reflection blurred by the sheer disbelief of her new reality. Married. To him. The stranger who wasn’t a stranger anymore. The man who had taken her breath, her body, and now, her future.
The silk robe clung to her shoulders, a mark of possession more than luxury. Everything here screamed Adrian—the polished marble floors, the sharp scent of expensive whiskey, the skyline glittering beyond glass walls like his personal kingdom.
And now, she was his queen.
Or his prisoner.
The door opened without a knock. Adrian filled the frame, still in his tailored tuxedo from the wedding, bow tie undone, shirt open at the throat. He looked devastating—too powerful, too calm.
“Why aren’t you in bed?” His voice was low, almost tender, but the undertone held iron.
Olivia’s hand trembled around the stem of her untouched champagne glass. “Because I don’t know how I got here.”
Adrian’s gaze pinned her. “You walked down the aisle. You said yes.”
“You think that makes it a choice?” she snapped, her voice cracking. “You knew. You knew who I was that night and you didn’t tell me—”
Adrian closed the distance in two steps. His hand caught her chin, tilting her face up, forcing her to drown in those storm-gray eyes.
“I didn’t tell you,” he murmured, “because I knew you’d run. And I don’t let what’s mine run.”
The words sent a shiver through her. Anger, fear, and—God help her—desire tangled inside her until she couldn’t tell them apart.
“Yours?” she echoed bitterly. “Is that what I am to you? A possession?”
His thumb brushed her lower lip with maddening slowness. “Not a possession, Olivia. An obsession.”
Her breath hitched, but before she could answer, a knock rattled the door. Sharp. Impatient.
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Stay here.”
He released her and strode across the room. When he opened the door, Damian leaned lazily against the frame, a smirk carved into his too-handsome face. The younger brother was everything Adrian wasn’t—reckless, flirtatious, dangerous in a way that promised chaos instead of control.
“Interrupting your honeymoon night?” Damian drawled, eyes flicking past Adrian to land squarely on Olivia. His smile deepened. “Worth it.”
Adrian’s shoulders stiffened. “Get out.”
“Relax, brother.” Damian stepped inside anyway, hands in his pockets, gaze never leaving Olivia. “I just came to congratulate the bride. You don’t mind, do you, Olivia?”
Her pulse spiked. She should say no. She should demand he leave. But Damian’s attention was a drug—addictive because it was forbidden.
“I…” Her voice faltered.
Adrian’s hand curled into a fist at his side. “She does mind.”
But Damian wasn’t listening. He circled closer, his cologne dark and intoxicating, his grin edged with mischief. He leaned in just enough for his words to brush Olivia’s ear.
“Careful,” he whispered, “or you’ll start to wonder if you chose the right brother.”
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Adrian yanked Damian back with a brutal grip on his shoulder.
“Out,” Adrian snarled.
For a moment, the brothers locked eyes—tension thick, electric, centuries old though they were only years apart. Then Damian chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender.
“Fine. Enjoy your bride, brother. While you can.”
He left with the same ease he’d entered, leaving the air cracked and Olivia trembling.
Adrian turned back to her, fury etched into every line of his body. “Don’t look at him again.”
Her throat tightened. “You can’t order me like—”
“I can.” His voice was lethal calm. “And I will.”
The fire in his eyes terrified her. But worse—it thrilled her.
⸻
The next evening, the city’s elite gathered in the glass-domed ballroom of the Crown Hotel. Adrian insisted she attend—it was her first appearance as his wife, her introduction into a world of wealth, whispers, and wolves.
Olivia wore a gown the color of midnight, the silk hugging her curves, diamonds dripping from her throat and wrists. She looked like she belonged. Inside, she felt like an imposter.
Every eye followed them as they entered. Adrian’s hand on the small of her back was both anchor and chain. He leaned down to murmur against her ear, “Smile, Olivia. Let them see who you belong to.”
She obeyed, though her stomach twisted.
Halfway through the evening, as Adrian was pulled into a circle of powerful men, Olivia slipped away to breathe. That’s when she felt it—the weight of a gaze that wasn’t her husband’s.
She turned.
And froze.
Across the room, a man stood like a storm contained in a suit. Broad shoulders, sharp jaw, eyes as dark as midnight storms. He wasn’t smiling. He was studying her like a puzzle he intended to solve.
Vincent Hale. CEO of Hale Global. Adrian’s rival in business…and, Olivia realized with a chill, perhaps in more.
He approached with slow, deliberate steps, the crowd parting for him as if he were gravity itself.
“Mrs. Cross” His voice was deep, velvet over steel. “Welcome to the game.”
Her lips parted. “You know who I am?”
“I make it my business to know what Adrian treasures.” His gaze dipped briefly, boldly, before returning to her eyes. “And what he doesn’t deserve.”
Olivia’s breath caught.
Vincent leaned closer, lowering his tone so only she could hear. “Tell me, Olivia. Do you feel like a wife…or a hostage?”
Her heart thundered. He couldn’t know. He couldn’t see that truth in her eyes.
But when she didn’t answer, his smile curved—dark, dangerous, promising.
“Don’t worry,” he murmured. “You’ll find me when you’re ready.”
And just like that, he slipped away, swallowed by the glittering crowd, leaving Olivia shaking in the center of it all.
By the time Adrian returned to her side, her champagne glass trembled in her hand.
“What did he say to you?” Adrian demanded. His tone wasn’t casual—it was a warning.
Olivia swallowed hard, pulse racing. If she told him, Adrian would burn the city to the ground. If she didn’t, she would be keeping a secret from the man who already owned too much of her.
Either way, the noose around her neck was tightening.
And she realized with a jolt of fear—three men had already begun to circle her.
Her husband who claimed her.
His brother who tempted her.
And now, the rival who wanted to steal her.
Olivia forced a smile for the crowd, but inside, she whispered to herself the one truth she couldn’t escape.
This was only the beginning.
